Background And Aims: Neurological complications (NCs) are significantly associated with reduced regional cerebral saturation (rSO) in patients undergoing cardiac surgeries, as assessed with cerebral oximetry (COx). However, limited evidence is available in patients undergoing balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV). Thus, we evaluated the utility of COx in patients undergoing BMV, the incidence of BMV-related NCs and the association of >20% reduction in rSO with NCs.

Background: Poractant administration with thin catheter is gradually gaining popularity compared to the INSURE technique. However, there is little evidence to use thin catheters for administration of beractant. With this background, we compared the effect of beractant administration with INSURE vs thin catheter in preterm infants less than 34 weeks with RDS on death/chronic lung disease (CLD).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the place of birth (inborn vs. outborn) and the effectiveness of whole-body hypothermia in protecting against brain injury in neonates suffering from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Conducted in seven neonatal intensive care units across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, the research followed 408 neonates born after 36 weeks of gestation who were randomized into hypothermia and control groups, tracking various brain injury indicators over time.
  • Results indicate that inborn neonates were generally smaller and had different delivery methods compared to outborn neonates, raising questions about how birthplace impacts treatment outcomes for HIE in this demographic

While factors influencing outcomes of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in developed countries have evolved from clinical characteristics to molecular profiles, similar data from developing countries are scarce. This is a single-centre analysis of outcomes in treated cases of RMS, with emphasis on prevalence, risk-migration and prognostic impact of Forkhead Box O1 (FOXO1) in non-metastatic RMS. All children with histopathologically proven RMS, treated between January 2013 and December 2018 were included.

Adiponectin-leptin ratio as a marker of cardio-metabolic risk in Indian children and youth with type 1 diabetes.

J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab

June 2023

Department of Growth and Pediatric Endocrinology, Hirabai Cowasji Jehangir Medical Research Institute, Jehangir Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra, India.

Objectives: Adiponectin/leptin ratio (ALR) is a promising novel marker of cardio-metabolic risk in patients with metabolic syndrome. Our aim was to study the association of adiponectin-leptin ratio with markers of obesity and adiposity and also to assess its usefulness as a marker of increased cardiometabolic risk (CMR) in Indian children and youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: This observational study included 79 children and youth with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) (10-21 years) having disease duration>6 months.

Heavy alcohol use is negatively affecting antiretroviral therapy adherence, mental health and health-related quality of life among people living with HIV (PLWH). This paper aims to test the mediation model examining whether changes in depression symptoms mediate in the relationship between health-related quality of life and alcohol use among male PLWH who consume alcohol in India. The study is guided by the stress-coping model, which posits that individuals facing stress may turn to maladaptive coping mechanisms such as alcohol use to alleviate their distress, which includes depression and a low health-related quality of life due to various physical, psychological, and social factors associated with the HIV infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic adeno-mixed neuroendocrine non-endocrine (pMINEN) tumors are extremely rare and have a lower survival rate compared to other similar cancers, often presenting with metastasis.
  • There is a significant lack of research and standardized treatment protocols for pMINEN tumors due to limited data and absence of large multicentric trials.
  • The authors emphasize the need for a coordinated multicentric trial to establish a systematic approach and share their experience with a particular pMINEN case that benefited from R0 surgery and multimodal treatments.
