Extensive peritoneal spread and capacity for distant metastasis account for the majority of mortality from epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Accumulating evidence shows that interleukin-6 (IL-6) promotes tumor invasion and migration in EOC, although the molecular mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Meanwhile, the hypoxic microenvironment has been recognized to cause metastasis by triggering epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in several types of cancers.

Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to a condition called hypocoagulopathy, which causes prolonged bleeding and worsening bleeding in the brain.
  • A study investigated whether bloodletting puncture therapy at hand twelve -well points (BL-HTWP) could help improve blood clotting and neuroprotection after TBI in mice.
  • Results showed that BL-HTWP not only improved neurological recovery and brain blood flow after TBI but also countered the hypocoagulable state, suggesting it could be a promising treatment for severe TBI in the future.

Article Synopsis
  • In December 2019, an outbreak of an unknown infectious disease began in Wuhan, later identified as COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2, leading to widespread concern and confusion.
  • Key questions arose regarding the sources of the virus, how it spreads, and who is most at risk, highlighting gaps in understanding as the situation developed.
  • The text also emphasizes the need to analyze the epidemic’s components, including sources of infection, transmission routes, vulnerable populations, and the influence of natural and social factors on the outbreak.

Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) causes neuronal death, demyelination, axonal degeneration, inflammation, glial scar formation, and cystic cavitation resulting in interruption of neural signaling and loss of nerve function. Multifactorial targeted therapy is a promising strategy for SCI.

Methods: The anti-inflammatory peptide KAFAKLAARLYRKALARQLGVAA (KAFAK) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-modified hyaluronan-methylcellulose (HAMC) hydrogel was designed for minimally invasive, localized, and sustained intrathecal protein delivery.

Landscape and rodent community composition are associated with risk of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in two cities in China, 2006-2013.

BMC Infect Dis

January 2018

State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science, College of Global Change and Earth System Science, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875, China.

Background: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease caused by hantaviruses. Landscape can influence the risk of hantavirus infection for humans, mainly through its effect on rodent community composition and distribution. It is important to understand how landscapes influence population dynamics for different rodent species and the subsequent effect on HFRS risk.

iTRAQ-Based Quantitative Proteomics Reveals the New Evidence Base for Traumatic Brain Injury Treated with Targeted Temperature Management.

Neurotherapeutics

January 2018

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Neurotrauma Repair, Institute of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neuroscience, Center for Neurology and Neurosurgery of Affiliated Hospital, Logistics University of Chinese People's Armed Police Force (PAP), Tianjin, China.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of targeted temperature management (TTM) modulation on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the involved mechanisms using quantitative proteomics technology. SH-SY5Y and HT-22 cells were subjected to moderate stretch injury using the cell injury controller (CIC), followed by incubation at TTM (mild hypothermia, 32°C), or normothermia (37°C). The real-time morphological changes, cell cycle phase distribution, death, and cell viability were evaluated.

Necroptosis, a novel type of programmed cell death, is involved in stroke-induced ischemic brain injury. Although studies have sought to explore the mechanisms of necroptosis, its signaling pathway has not yet to be completely elucidated. Thus, we used oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) and middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) models mimicking ischemic stroke (IS) conditions to investigate mechanisms of necroptosis.

Objective: The objective of this study was to build a database to collect infectious disease information at the scene of a disaster through the use of 128 epidemiological questionnaires and 47 types of options, with rapid acquisition of information regarding infectious disease and rapid questionnaire customization at the scene of disaster relief by use of a personal digital assistant (PDA).

Methods: SQL Server 2005 (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA) was used to create the option database for the infectious disease investigation, to develop a client application for the PDA, and to deploy the application on the server side. The users accessed the server for data collection and questionnaire customization with the PDA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the changes in clinical characteristics during an adenovirus outbreak in Tianjin, China, from December 2012 to February 2013.
  • Active surveillance was performed on febrile respiratory illnesses, using advanced techniques like real-time PCR for pathogen identification and various statistical tests for data analysis.
  • The outbreak resulted in 856 cases caused by human adenovirus 55, with varying symptoms and distinct patterns in blood and organ function tests over time in hospitalized patients.
