Do differences in diagnostic criteria for late fetal growth restriction matter?

Am J Obstet Gynecol MFM

November 2023

Unit of Fetal Medicine and Prenatal Diagnosis, Institute for Maternal and Child Health, IRCCS Burlo Garofolo, Trieste, Italy (Dr Stampalija); Department of Medicine, Surgery and Health Sciences, University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy (Dr Stampalija).

Background: Criteria for diagnosis of fetal growth restriction differ widely according to national and international guidelines, and further heterogeneity arises from the use of different biometric and Doppler reference charts, making the diagnosis of fetal growth restriction highly variable.

Objective: This study aimed to compare fetal growth restriction definitions between Delphi consensus and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine definitions, using different standards/charts for fetal biometry and different reference ranges for Doppler velocimetry parameters.

Study Design: From the TRUFFLE 2 feasibility study (856 women with singleton pregnancy at 32 to 36 weeks of gestation and at risk of fetal growth restriction), we selected 564 women with available mid-pregnancy biometry.

Colorectal cancer risk after removal of polyps in fecal immunochemical test based screening.

EClinicalMedicine

July 2023

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Amsterdam University Medical Centers, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Background: Colonoscopy surveillance intervals are based on the predicted risk of metachronous colorectal cancer (CRC) after polyp removal. However, risk estimation per polyp subtype is difficult due to the fact that many patients have multiple polyps. To enable risk estimation per polyp subtypes we examined the metachronous CRC risk of subgroups based on presence or absence of co-occurring findings.

Prolonged indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-2 activity and associated cellular stress in post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

EBioMedicine

August 2023

Department Experimental Immunology, Amsterdam Infection and Immunity Center, Amsterdam University Medical Centers (UMC), location Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam, Meibergdreef 9, 1105 AZ Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Department Pulmonary Medicine, Amsterdam UMC, location AMC, University of Amsterdam, Meibergdreef 9, 1105 AZ Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Post-acute sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) encompass fatigue, post-exertional malaise and cognitive problems. The abundant expression of the tryptophan-catabolizing enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-2 (IDO2) in fatal/severe COVID-19, led us to determine, in an exploratory observational study, whether IDO2 is expressed and active in PASC, and may correlate with pathophysiology.

Methods: Plasma or serum, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were obtained from well-characterized PASC patients and SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals without PASC.

Provocation testing in congenital long QT syndrome: A practical guide.

Heart Rhythm

November 2023

Victorian Heart Institute & Monash Health Heart, Victorian Heart Hospital, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Electronic address:

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a hereditary cardiac channelopathy with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 2500. A prolonged resting QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc interval) remains a key diagnostic component; however, the QTc value may be normal in up to 40% of patients with genotype-positive LQTS and borderline in a further 30%. Provocation of QTc prolongation and T-wave changes may be pivotal to unmasking the diagnosis and useful in predicting genotype.

Isotopic Tracing of Nucleotide Sugar Metabolism in Human Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Cells

July 2023

Department of Neurology, Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior, Radboud University Medical Center, 6525 GA Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Metabolism not only produces energy necessary for the cell but is also a key regulator of several cellular functions, including pluripotency and self-renewal. Nucleotide sugars (NSs) are activated sugars that link glucose metabolism with cellular functions via protein N-glycosylation and O-GlcNAcylation. Thus, understanding how different metabolic pathways converge in the synthesis of NSs is critical to explore new opportunities for metabolic interference and modulation of stem cell functions.

The intralaminar thalamus, in particular the centromedian-parafascicular complex, forms a strategic node between ascending information from the spinal cord and brainstem and forebrain circuitry that involves the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. A large body of evidence shows that this functionally heterogeneous region regulates information transmission in different cortical circuits, and is involved in a variety of functions, including cognition, arousal, consciousness and processing of pain signals. Not surprisingly, the intralaminar thalamus has been a target area for (radio)surgical ablation and deep brain stimulation (DBS) in different neurological and psychiatric disorders.
