In 2021, the UK Government announced additional funding in England for Adult Weight Management Services (AWMS); it was specified that the extra funding must be used to commission or extend existing tier 2 services. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities encouraged commissioners to prioritise services for higher-risk groups such as those with learning disabilities, severe mental illness, people from minority ethnic groups, those living in deprived areas and men. To better understand the findings from previous survey work and to explore the implementation of targeted services in greater depth, we undertook a multiple case study comprising eight tier 2 adult weight management service providers and 35 individual stakeholder interviewees.

Naringin, a flavanone glycoside found abundantly in citrus fruits, is well-known for its various pharmacological properties, particularly its significant anticancer effects. Research, both in vitro and in vivo, has shown that naringin is effective against several types of cancer, including liver, breast, thyroid, prostate, colon, bladder, cervical, lung, ovarian, brain, melanoma, and leukemia. Its anticancer properties are mediated through multiple mechanisms, such as apoptosis induction, inhibition of cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest, and suppression of angiogenesis, metastasis, and invasion, all while exhibiting minimal toxicity and adverse effects.

Introduction: Regional anaesthesia provides important clinical benefits to patients but is underutilised. A barrier to widespread adoption may be the focus of regional anaesthesia research on novel techniques rather than evaluating and optimising existing approaches. Research priorities in regional anaesthesia identified by anaesthetists have been published, but the views of patients, carers and other healthcare professionals have not been considered previously.

Objectives: Randomised trials for the management of drug-resistant infections are challenging to conduct as target patient populations often lack decision-making capacity, and enrolment windows are typically short. Improving informed consent and risk communication in these trials is especially crucial for protecting patient interests and maximising trial efficiency. This study aimed to understand challenges in risk communication and informed consent in antimicrobial clinical trials.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the Partners in Health (PIH) scale's effectiveness in assessing self-management of chronic diseases in a diverse group of Singaporean patients aged 40 and older.
  • - Findings reveal that the PIH scale has a suitable four-factor structure and measurement equality for both genders, with strong correlations to relevant healthcare constructs.
  • - The research highlights that factors such as sociodemographic characteristics and healthcare satisfaction notably influence self-management, with particularly positive impacts for minority or lower-education patients when they are satisfied with their care.

Objective: To evaluate the validity of the Utah statewide All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), we compared breast cancer-specific treatments and dosages with gold-standard abstraction of medical records.

Study Design: In this pilot study, breast cancer treatments were abstracted by a certified tumor registrar at the Utah Cancer Registry (UCR) for patients diagnosed in 2013 with breast cancer. The abstraction of medical records was the gold standard for comparison with treatments identified in the APCD.

Objective: The objective of this study was to report the 12-month oncological outcomes for patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) within the prospective, international COVIDSurg Cancer study.

Patients And Methods: Eligible patients were aged ≥18 years and scheduled for elective surgical management of NMIBC with curative intent (transurethral resection of bladder tumour [TURBT] or bladder biopsy) from 21 January to 14 April 2020. The primary outcome was disease recurrence within 12 months of previous elective TURBT/bladder biopsy.

Objectives: With a projected rise in care home residency and the disproportionate impact of epilepsy and seizures on older adults, understanding seizure-related needs in this population is crucial. Data silos and inconsistent recording of residence status make this challenging. We thus leveraged ambulance data to investigate seizure call-out incidence, characteristics, management and costs in care homes compared with the wider community.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study compares cochlear implant (CI) outcomes for speech perception in patients with sporadic vestibular schwannoma (VS) treated through observation, radiosurgery, or microsurgery.
  • - Of the 100 patients analyzed, those who underwent microsurgery had poorer speech perception scores compared to those who were observed or treated with radiosurgery, with only 61% achieving open-set speech perception after microsurgery.
  • - The findings suggest that cochlear implants can be beneficial for sporadic VS patients, particularly those managed by observation or radiosurgery, as these groups showed significantly better outcomes in achieving open-set speech perception.

Purpose: The objective of this consensus is to provide otolaryngologists with appropriate strategies in the management of external auditory canal (EAC) carcinoma.

Methods: In the absence of randomized controlled trials, the consensus is based on expert opinions utilizing the Rand/UCLA appropriateness method [Fitch and Aguilar in The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method user's manual, RAND Corporation, Santa Monica, CA, 2001], drawing from existing literature and clinical experience.

Results: The management recommendations are structured around 12 key areas, including: definition and pathology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, work-up, tumor staging system, surgical management of primary tumor, surgical management of the parotid gland and the temporomandibular joint, lymph node metastasis, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, reconstruction, and follow-up.

Purpose: For patients with celiac disease (CeD), the only current management option is adherence to a strict gluten-free diet (GFD); however, many patients on a GFD continue to experience symptoms with a significant impact on quality of life. Potential new treatments for CeD are under development and a validated patient-reported outcome measure is required to evaluate their utility in clinical trials. The purpose of this article is to provide a history of the development of the Celiac Disease Symptom Diary (CDSD) 2.

Macro- and microplastics leachates: Characterization and impact on seed germination.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

Soil Physics and Land Management Group, Wageningen University & Research, Droevendaalsesteeg 3, 6708PB Wageningen, the Netherlands.

Although plastic mulch enhances crop yield, its removal and disposal present significant challenges, contributing to macro- and microplastic pollution in agricultural soils. The adverse effects of this pollution on soil and plant health are not fully understood but may stem from the plastic particles or the toxicity of leached chemical additives. This study assessed the impact of macro- and microplastics from nondegradable LDPE-based (LDPEb) and biodegradable PBAT-based (PBATb) mulch films, along with their leachates, on the germination of three plant species.
