Evid Based Complement Alternat Med

November 2021

Department of Urology, Liuzhou Workers' Hospital, Liuzhou 545007, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

Objective: To analyze the efficacy of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) combined with radiation therapy (also known as radiotherapy) for prostate cancer.

Methods: The clinical data of 94 prostate cancer patients treated in the Oncology Department of Xiangzhou People's Hospital from January 2017 to January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed, and the patients were divided into the combined group and the reference group according to their admission order, with 47 cases each. The patients in the reference group only received the radiotherapy, and on this basis, those in the combined group accepted ADT, so as to evaluate the efficacy of different treatment methods by comparing the patients' serum total prostate-specific antigen (T-PSA), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and other indicators and analyze the relevant factors affecting patients' prognosis by Cox single-factor and multi-factor regression models.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, causing 782,000 deaths in 2018. Poor prognosis and lack of treatment are the reasons for the high mortality rate of HCC. In the current study, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis, followed by a series of bioinformatics analyses, including Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA), aiming to unfold the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the development of HCC.

Nat Med

September 2021

Department of Medical Oncology, Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center of Cancer Medicine, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Gemcitabine-cisplatin chemotherapy is the standard treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma; a phase 3 trial tested toripalimab (a PD-1 antibody) combined with this chemotherapy against a placebo.
  • - The trial involved 289 patients and showed that those receiving toripalimab had a significantly better progression-free survival (PFS) of 11.7 months compared to 8.0 months for the placebo group.
  • - The addition of toripalimab also reduced the risk of death by 40%, though some immune-related side effects were more common; overall, the treatment had an acceptable safety profile.

Aim: The present study was designed to assess the role of family function and social support in the context of different phases of schizophrenia.

Methods: First-episode patients with experiences of schizophrenia (FEP), ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR), first-degree relatives (FDR) of patients with experiences of schizophrenia, and healthy controls (HC) (40 per group) were subjected to in-person clinical interviews. The results of these interviews were then used to gauge social support and family function using the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales (FACESII-CV).

Background: Manganese overexposure can induce neurotoxicity, lead to manganism and result in clinical manifestations similar to those of parkinsonism. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear. This study demonstrated that MnCl induces mitophagy and leads to neurotoxicity by promoting BNIP3-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation.

Vascular calcification (VC) accompanies the trans-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) into osteo/chondrocyte-like cells and resembles physiological bone mineralization. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying VC initiation and progression have remained largely elusive. The aim of the present study was to identify the genes and pathways common to VSMC and osteoblast calcification and construct a regulatory network of non-coding RNAs and transcription factors (TFs).

Electronic address:

The fetal-to-adult hemoglobin switch is regulated in a developmental stage-specific manner and reactivation of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) has therapeutic implications for treatment of β-thalassemia and sickle cell anemia, two major global health problems. Although significant progress has been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanism of the fetal-to-adult hemoglobin switch, the mechanism of epigenetic regulation of HbF silencing remains to be fully defined. Here, we performed whole-genome bisulfite sequencing and RNA sequencing analysis of the bone marrow-derived GYPA erythroid cells from β-thalassemia-affected individuals with widely varying levels of HbF groups (HbF ≥ 95th percentile or HbF ≤ 5th percentile) to screen epigenetic modulators of HbF and phenotypic diversity of β-thalassemia.

Department of Medical Oncology of Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center of Cancer Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated toripalimab, a new PD-1 inhibitor, for treating patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who didn't respond to standard chemotherapy.
  • Among the 190 patients treated, the overall response rate (ORR) was 20.5%, with a median duration of response of 12.8 months and overall survival of 17.4 months.
  • A significant correlation was found between a decrease in plasma EBV DNA after 28 days and better treatment response, while genomic alterations were linked to poorer outcomes.
