Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to competing strains on hospital resources and healthcare personnel. Patients with newly diagnosed invasive urothelial carcinomas of bladder (UCB) upper tract (UTUC) may experience delays to definitive radical cystectomy (RC) or radical nephro-ureterectomy (RNU) respectively. We evaluate the impact of delaying definitive surgery on survival outcomes for invasive UCB and UTUC.

Objective: Evidence for the management of acute otitis externa (AOE) is limited, with unclear diagnostic criteria and variably reported outcome measures that may not reflect key stakeholder priorities. We aimed to develop 1) a definition, 2) diagnostic criteria and 3) a core outcome set (COS) for AOE.

Study Design: COS development according to Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) methodology and parallel consensus selection of diagnostic criteria/definition.

Historically, immediate cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) was considered the standard of care in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) who were fit enough to undergo surgery. Recently, 2 randomized controlled trials, SURTIME and CARMENA, have questioned the role of immediate CN and initiated an ongoing debate on the proper indications and timing of CN. Although some patients still benefit from immediate CN, other patients require immediate systemic treatment, and some of them might benefit from deferred CN in the absence of disease progression.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the unclear causes of stenoses (narrowing) in arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) used for dialysis, focusing on comparing ultrasound results with histological (microscopic) findings in patients.
  • - Ultrasound revealed varying degrees of intimal thickening at the stenosis sites, ranging from 0% to 100%, and showed differences between stenoses with and without neointimal hyperplasia (excess tissue growth).
  • - Histological analysis highlighted that AVF stenoses vary significantly, showing different types of tissue changes (such as neointimal hyperplasia and fibrosis), indicating that these stenoses are not uniform and suggesting a need for more research to inform treatment options.

Introduction And Objectives: Novel biomarker research is vital for the progression of safe and thorough diagnostic medicine. There is now a need to improve the diagnosis of bladder cancer via a noninvasive urine test while balancing the risks of harm from investigational procedures, such as cystoscopy and radiological tests, against the likelihood of malignancy. We evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity of Uro17™ urinary biomarker for the detection of urothelial cancer in hematuria patients in a prospective blinded validation study.

Background: Radiotherapy and cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy are accepted standard-of-care treatments for metastatic seminoma with excellent survival outcomes but with established short- and long-term morbidity. Carboplatin monotherapy may be a less toxic alternative; however early historic studies at AUC7 showed inferior outcomes.

Objectives: To evaluate multi-institutional data on and toxicity and longer-term survival for metastatic seminoma patients treated with the single-agent carboplatin AUC10.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has generated large volumes of clinical data that can be an invaluable resource towards answering a number of important questions for this and future pandemics. Artificial intelligence can have an important role in analysing such data to identify populations at higher risk of COVID-19-related urological pathologies and to suggest treatments that block viral entry into cells by interrupting the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2-transmembrane serine protease 2 (ACE2-TMPRSS2) pathway.

Shock wave lithotripsy may unmask epitopes within the glomerular basement membrane, leading to the formation of anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies and clinical disease in susceptible individuals. Although rare, our case highlights the need for vigilant monitoring of renal function following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. This may allow for early recognition, treatment and improved outcome of anti-GBM disease.
