Patients with gastric cancer often experience weight loss. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between weight loss and survival outcomes in gastric cancer patients. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science according to the PECOS criteria: population (gastric cancer patients), exposure (weight loss), comparator (weight stable), outcomes [overall survival (OS) or recurrence-free survival], and study design (cohort studies).

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate how weight loss affects survival in lung cancer patients.
  • The analysis included 15 studies with over 14,500 patients and found that a weight loss of at least 5% was linked to decreased overall and progression-free survival rates.
  • Results indicate that weight monitoring could enhance the ability to predict survival outcomes for lung cancer patients, regardless of various factors like cancer stage or type.

Background: The study aimed to evaluate the positivity rates and genotype distribution of the multiplex PCR capillary electrophoresis (MPCE) and PCR-Reverse Dot Blot (PCR-RDB) assays for human papillomavirus (HPV) detection in cervical cancer tissue specimens, and to explore their detection principles and applications in large-scale population screening.

Methods: The MPCE and PCR-RDB assays were performed separately on 425 diagnosed cervical cancer tissue specimens. Subsequently, the results of both assays were compared based on the HPV infection positivity rates and genotype distribution.

Background: Laparoscopic-assisted radical gastrectomy (LARG) is the standard treatment for early-stage gastric carcinoma (GC). However, the negative impact of this procedure on respiratory function requires the optimized intraoperative management of patients in terms of ventilation.

Aim: To investigate the influence of pressure-controlled ventilation volume-guaranteed (PCV-VG) and volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) on blood gas analysis and pulmonary ventilation in patients undergoing LARG for GC based on the lung ultrasound score (LUS).

The cachexia index is a novel indicator of cachexia, but its prognostic implications for survival outcomes have not been systematically assessed in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the association between the cachexia index and survival outcomes in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify studies that evaluated the prognostic significance of the cachexia index in patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant need exists for anticoagulant therapies that minimize bleeding risk in thrombosis prevention, prompting research into FXIa and FXIIa inhibitors known for their lower bleeding complications.
  • This study utilized the SynergyFinder tool to analyze how different proportions of the FXIa inhibitor PN2KPI and FXIIa inhibitor Infestin4 can work together to provide better anticoagulation effects.
  • The combination of PN2KPI and Infestin4 in specific doses was shown to effectively prevent blood clotting in mouse models without increasing the risk of bleeding.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) presents a growing concern globally, marked by its escalating incidence and mortality rates, thus imposing a substantial health burden. This investigation delves into the role of nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1) in CRC metastasis and explores the associated mechanism. Through a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, NR3C1 emerged as a gene with diminished expression levels in CRC.

Impact of frailty on adverse outcomes in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm undergoing surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Nutr Health Aging

May 2024

Institute of Molecular Biology & Translational Medicine, The Affiliated People's Hospital, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang 212002, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To explore the prognostic role of frailty in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) by conducting this systematic review and meta-analysis METHODS: We conducted an extensive literature search on PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Embase databases to identify studies that reported the association of frailty with postoperative complications, reintervention, or all-cause mortality in patients with AAA after surgery. Short-term mortality was defined by a combination of in-hospital and 30-day death.

Results: Seven cohort studies reporting on 9 articles with 323,788 AAA patients were included.

Cisplatin nephrotoxicity is an etiological factor for acute kidney injury (AKI). MicroRNA (miRNA) expression is dysregulated in cisplatin-induced AKI (cAKI) although the underlying mechanisms are unclear. A cAKI model was established by intraperitoneally injecting cisplatin, and key miRNAs were screened using high-throughput miRNA sequencing.

Background: Malakoplakia is a rare acquired chronic infectious granulomatous condition, that is characterized by the accumulation of large granular macrophages containing basophilic inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm termed Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) bodies. Malakoplakia most commonly involves the genitourinary system, and the second most commonly affected site is the gastrointestinal tract. Rectal malakoplakia is an unusual entity that is difficult to diagnose due to its diverse clinical manifestations and radiological findings that are similar to different diseases and advanced cancers.
