Background: Incidence of cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) in young adults is increasing. Early left atrial (LA) myopathy might be 1 of the underlying mechanisms, but this has only been scarcely explored.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between increased LA stiffness and CIS in young adults.

The ovariectomy (OVE) procedure can trigger somatosensory and visceral peritoneal nociception. Sacrococcygeal epidural (ScE) anesthesia may complement or replace systemic analgesia used for feline OVE, reducing opioid consumption and their related undesirable adverse effects and consequently reducing or completely blocking the sympathetic nervous system activation during this procedure. The present study aimed to evaluate the activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting from adding an ScE injection of bupivacaine 0.

The challenges experienced in the context of the pandemic have required a significant reconciliation between work and family domains due to confinement and the need to spend more time at home, which may have increased the levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, making it necessary to use resilient coping strategies to overcome the difficulties felt. This study examined the effect of resilient coping on the relationship between work-family conflict and stress, anxiety, and depression in this context. Data were collected using a self-report protocol from a sample of Portuguese workers ( = 476).

Grass and olive pollens have overlapping pollination periods and are common allergens in the Iberian Peninsula. The objective is to determine the sensitization pattern to major Phleum pratense and Olea europaea pollens in the Portuguese population with pollen allergic rhinitis (AR) using molecular allergen diagnosis (MAD). Seasonal AR patients (≥ 12 years), with positive skin prick tests (SPT) to Phleum and Olea were recruited from 16 centers.

Introduction: It is suggested to wait at least 3 months to repeat a fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to avoid possible inflammatory cytological changes induced by a previous procedure. This study evaluated the influence of the interval between 2 FNACs in a cohort with a previous non-diagnostic (ND) FNAC. We analysed the occurrence of ND or atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS) results in the second FNAC, based on the intervals between procedures.

Despite wide endorsement of a biopsychosocial framework for pain, social aspects of pain remain rarely addressed in the context of pain prevention and management. In this review, we aim to 1) examine the broad scope of social determinants and consequences of pain and their interactions across multiple levels of organization, and 2) provide a framework synthesizing existing concepts and potential areas for future work on social aspects of pain, drawing upon socioecological, intersectional, and life course approaches. Integrating interdisciplinary theory and evidence, we outline pathways through which multilevel social factors and pain may affect each other over time.

This manuscript describes the Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) international consensus guidelines updated at the last two ABC international consensus conferences (ABC 6 in 2021, virtual, and ABC 7 in 2023, in Lisbon, Portugal), organized by the ABC Global Alliance. It provides the main recommendations on how to best manage patients with advanced breast cancer (inoperable locally advanced or metastatic), of all breast cancer subtypes, as well as palliative and supportive care. These guidelines are based on available evidence or on expert opinion when a higher level of evidence is lacking.

Equine skin wound treatment continues to be a challenge for veterinarians. Despite being a frequent practice, it remains difficult to choose an evidence-based treatment protocol. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the literature and provide a scoping review of therapeutic strategies for equine skin wounds and identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research.

Objectives: Monochorionic twins (MC) have higher risk of perinatal morbi-mortality compared to singletons and dichorionic twins (DC). Selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) increases the chances of adverse outcome. Hepatic arterial buffer response (HABR) is an important mechanism for maintaining liver perfusion.

People with nonsevere hemophilia (PWNSH) are phenotypically more diverse than those with severe hemophilia. Perceptions relating to a "nonsevere" phenotype have contributed to fewer research initiatives, fewer guidelines on optimal management, and a lack of standards for surveillance and clinical assessment for affected individuals. In many cases, episodes of abnormal bleeding could, if investigated, have led to earlier diagnosis.

The elemental composition of chemical elements can vary between healthy and diseased tissues, providing essential insights into metabolic processes in physiological and diseased states. This study aimed to evaluate the calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in the bones of rats with/without streptozotocin-induced diabetes and/or exposure to infrasound. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to determine the concentrations of Ca and P in Wistar rat tibiae samples.

Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a transmembrane protein that, when cleaved by metalloproteases through a process called ectodomain shedding, binds to the EGF receptor (EGFR), activating downstream signaling. The HB-EGF/EGFR pathway is crucial in development and is involved in numerous pathophysiological processes. In this issue of The FEBS Journal, Sireci et al.

Background: Dyspnoea is a common symptom of respiratory disease. However, data on its prevalence in general populations and its association with lung function are limited and are mainly from high-income countries. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of dyspnoea across several world regions, and to investigate the association of dyspnoea with lung function.

Background: In society, people live in a social reality where multiculturalism is an increasingly relevant and prevalent topic in their contexts. Facing this, caring for multicultural patients in an emergency service or intensive care unit setting requires a high level of cultural competence due to the complexity, vulnerability of the patient, rapid changes in hemodynamic status, involvement of the family, their informational needs.
Objective: To map the strategies for nursing care of critically ill multicultural patients.

Background: The monitoring of nociception/antinociception poses a significant challenge during anesthesia, making the incorporation of new tools like the Parasympathetic Tone Activity (PTA) monitor an added value in feline anesthesia.
Objectives: To compare the effectiveness and speed of PTA monitoring when compared to heart rate (HR) in detecting surgical stimuli (SS) during the intraoperative period in 49 female cats undergoing ovariectomy (OV).
Methods: Instantaneous Parasympathetic Tone Activity (PTAi) values, HR, , and non-invasive SAP and MAP were continuously monitored and systematically assessed.

Radium-223 dichloride (Ra223) is the first targeted alpha agent approved for treating metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) with bone-exclusive disease. A benefit in overall survival and time to the first symptomatic skeletal-related event was shown in the Alpharadin in Symptomatic Prostate Cancer Patients (ALSYMPCA) trial. However, this trial did not describe a bone scan response to Ra223, and there is no universal consensus about how it should be monitored.
