Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) cause 19 million fatalities each year and cost nations billions of dollars. Surrogate biomarkers are established methods for CVD risk stratification; however, manual inspection is costly, cumbersome, and error-prone. The contemporary artificial intelligence (AI) tools for segmentation and risk prediction, including older deep learning (DL) networks employ simple merge connections which may result in semantic loss of information and hence low in accuracy.

We surveyed authors of COVID-19 preprints to learn about their experiences with preprinting their work and also with publishing their work in a peer-reviewed journal. Our research had the following objectives: 1.

Introduction: After more than 25 years working in palliative care (PC) observing thousands of patients and family behaviors, I use my long experience and notes as a source of data for a qualitative research study. The aim is to identify frequent families' behavior patterns in PC and better describe the culture in PC.
Methods: This article is part of a larger project, using autoethnography as methodology, with the aim of helping doctors and interested health professionals better understand the culture and reality of PC.

Cardiovascular diseases and neoplastic diseases are the two main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Treated cancer patients usually develop cardiac diseases late in life due to chemotherapy- induced heart damage. The type of damage caused to the heart depends on the type of agent used during cancer treatment.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of hyperthyroidism and their etiology on bone mineral density (BMD), on body soft tissue composition, on the prevalence of vertebral fractures detected by vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) and on the trabecular bone score (TBS).
Methods: From an initial population of 119 Portuguese men (78 with hyperthyroidism [HT]+ 41 controls [CTs]) admitted to the Endocrinology Department we selected 41 men aged over 50 with clinical hyperthyroidism to participate; each one was matched by age and height with a control person. BMD (g/cm) at the lumbar spine, hip, radius 33% and whole body and the total body masses (kg) were studied by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Anemia Working Group - Portugal, Lisbon, Portugal.
Aim: The present study aimed to characterize the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in older Portuguese adults, and to compare it with the prevalence in younger individuals.
Methods: A population-based, cross-sectional study (EMPIRE study) enrolling a representative sample of 6267 adults aged <65 years and 1617 adults aged ≥65 years was carried out. Hemoglobin, ferritin, creatinine and C-reactive protein levels were measured by Point-of-Care tests.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have become the primary health concern for most countries around the world. Currently, more than 36 million people worldwide die from NCDs each year, accounting for 63% of annual global deaths; most are preventable. The global financial burden of NCDs is staggering, with an estimated 2010 global cost of $6.

Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an independent risk factor for stroke, increasing the risk five-fold. Strokes in patients with AF are more likely than other embolic strokes to be fatal or cause severe disability and are associated with higher healthcare costs, but they are also preventable.

Background: Hyperthyroidism is a risk factor for reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporotic fractures. Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a radiological method of visualization of the spine, which enables patient comfort and reduced radiation exposure.
Objectives: This study was carried out to evaluate BMD and the prevalence of silent vertebral fractures in young men with hyperthyroidism.

Expression of protein kinase CK2 is frequently deregulated in cancer and mounting evidence implicates CK2 in tumorigenesis. Here, we show that CK2 is overexpressed and hyperactivated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Inhibition of CK2 induces apoptosis of CLL cells without significantly affecting normal B and T lymphocytes.

Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is an essential cytokine for T-cell development and homeostasis. It is well established that IL-7 promotes the transcriptional down-regulation of IL7RA, leading to decreased IL-7Ralpha surface expression. However, it is currently unknown whether IL-7 regulates the intracellular trafficking and early turnover of its receptor on ligand binding.

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) patients frequently display NOTCH1 activating mutations and Notch can transcriptionally down-regulate the tumor suppressor PTEN. However, it is not clear whether NOTCH1 mutations associate with decreased PTEN expression in primary T-ALL. Here, we compared patients with or without NOTCH1 mutations and report that the former presented higher MYC transcript levels and decreased PTEN mRNA expression.

Intracoronary ultrasound (ICUS) is a new imaging technique with the unique ability to study vessel wall morphology in vivo, accurately displaying the details of vessel structure. The coronary angiogram represents only a projectional image of the vessel lumen without providing any information concerning vascular wall architecture. Interventional cardiology has developed over the last years with the appearance of new devices and consequently new challenges.
