Abdominoplasty is a common aesthetic surgical procedure primarily performed under general anesthesia (GA). However, GA is aerosol-generating and involves extended immobilization associated with systemic complications like venous thromboembolisms (VTEs). There is increasing interest in performing abdominoplasties without GA because of potential lower complication rates and shorter postoperative recovery time.

Background: Application of helium-based plasma radiofrequency (RF; Renuvion, Apyx Medical, Clearwater, FL) in the subcutaneous plane results in tissue coagulation and contraction. Although, traditionally, the impact of thermal devices on skin laxity is assessed by measuring changes in skin surface area, this indirect measure does not permit intraoperative assessment or differentiation of effects from various treatments.
Objectives: To determine the amount of soft tissue contraction achieved by multiple passes of helium plasma RF energy to the subcutaneous connective tissues following power-assisted liposuction (PAL).

Background: More than 65% of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) use arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) for hemodialysis. The increasing incidence of comorbid ESRD and obesity (body mass index, >35 kg/m) precludes patients from kidney transplantation, resulting in a need for long-term, durable AVF access. Compared with traditional superficialization techniques for overlying adiposity, liposuction is minimally invasive and well-tolerated, allowing for earlier fistula use with lower complications.

Background: Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma originating in the retroperitoneal space. Although surgery is the standard treatment, recurrence remains frequent. In this study, we aimed to explore the safety and efficacy of total (ipsilateral) retroperitoneal lipectomy (TRL) compared to traditional complete resection (CR) for primary RPLS.

Background: Liposuction is the most common cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in the United States, and lipo-aspiration for fat grafting is gaining in popularity. The results are effective, but complications include seroma, contour irregularities, skin necrosis, and even death. Scarring, dehiscence, and infection at the port site, although minor, are a common and less-discussed problem.

Background: Adipose tissue provides an abundant source of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells for immediate administration. It can also give rise to many multipotent adipose-derived stromal cells. SVF is the population of cells obtained from mechanical or enzymatic digestion of lipoaspirate with no necessity for cell culture or expansion.

Background: The incidence rate of submental liposuction has been increasing in recent years. Although this procedure is relatively simple, serious complications, including fatalities, have been reported, primarily owing to intraoperative and postoperative bleeding.
Methods: To enhance the safety of liposuction, we examined the efficacy of Beriplast® P (CSL Behring, Melbourne, Australia), a physiological tissue adhesive fibrin sealant, in reducing postoperative swelling.

Introduction: Cosmetic surgery tourism is a burgeoning field, attracting patients with the possibility of procedures at reduced costs. Patients are often unaware of the potential cost of managing complications, with the cost often passed on to the local healthcare systems. We report our experience at a single academic center which serves as a safety net hospital managing cosmetic surgery tourism patients.

The depressor labii inferioris (DLI) muscle helps to lower and turn the lower lip outward and receives innervation from the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. Paralysis of this muscle is a rare but potential complication of chin augmentation injections. Paralysis of the DLI causes symptoms such as difficulty smiling on the affected side, difficulty speaking clearly, and facial asymmetry, especially when smiling.

From the Private Practice, Total Lipedema Care, Beverly Hills, CA.
Routine cold-water immersion (CWI) is typically suggested to reduce inflammation, a hallmark property of lipedema. Lipedema is a connective tissue disorder with a genetic component that presents with a disproportionate distribution of nodules in the extremities. This case report explores the impact of routine CWI on the effectiveness of lipedema reduction surgery (LRS) and manual lipedema extraction, as part of the SMiLE technique (softening, mobilization, liposuction, and extraction).
