Ectopic Nasal Septum Neuroglial Tissue: A Case Review.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

September 2024

From the Royal Jordanian Rehabilitation Center, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Amman, Jordan.

Article Synopsis
  • Ectopic neuroglial tissue is a rare condition where benign brain-like cells are found outside the central nervous system, making it difficult to diagnose without specialized tests.
  • Diagnosing it relies heavily on histopathology since it can resemble other issues like dermoid or pilar cysts.
  • A case study of a 19-month-old boy showed a lesion on his nose, initially thought to be a dermoid cyst, but turned out to be neuroglial heterotopia after surgical examination.

Schwannoma is a benign tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath and is a unique clinical entity when localized to a lower limb. Growing as a painless nodule, it might be misdiagnosed by many medical professionals as another benign soft tissue skin condition, such as lipoma, myxoma, or ganglion cyst. Definitive diagnosis of peripheral schwannoma is made by biopsy and histopathologic evaluation, followed by surgical excision, which is the definitive treatment of the tumor.

Intradural spinal lipomas are rare benign lesions typically located in the lumbosacral region and associated with spinal dysraphism in children. When unassociated with spinal dysraphism, they are most often diagnosed in young children or adolescents following the emergence of neurological symptoms. In their most rare form, intradural spinal lipomas may be found in adults without spinal dysraphism.

Vastus Lateralis Transfer for Reconstruction of Hip Abduction following Superior Gluteal Nerve Injury.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

September 2024

From the Department of Hand-, Plastic, Reconstructive and Burn Surgery, BG Klinik Tuebingen, University of Tuebingen, Tuebingen, Germany.

A 71-year-old man who had hip abductor insufficiency due to a chronic injury to the right superior gluteal nerve injury after lipoma resection presented to our outpatient clinic 1.5 years postoperatively with persistent pain, atrophy of the gluteus medius muscle, and Trendelenburg sign with a corresponding limp. A magnetic resonance imaging scan and neurophysiological diagnostics confirmed a chronic lesion of the superior gluteal nerve with completed reinnervation and absent pathological spontaneous activity, excluding neurosurgical options to restore hip abduction.

Intravenous lipomas (IVLs) of the head and neck are uncommon benign tumors that develop within the venous walls, often detected incidentally during imaging for unrelated issues. While usually asymptomatic, these IVLs can cause congestive venous symptoms like swelling, paresthesia or pain in the head and neck and upper limbs, or even venous thromboembolism. The precise diagnosis of IVLs is predominantly achieved through computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with CT being the most frequently used method.

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum: A benign cardiac mass.

JAAPA

September 2024

Christine Rullo practices at Beacon Medical Group in South Bend, Ind. The author has disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum (LHIS) is a rare but benign cardiac tumor that can be found on cardiac imaging such as echocardiogram, or during surgery or an autopsy. Cardiac MRI is the best imaging modality to determine the borders of the tumor and its extension into the intraventricular septum and ventricular free wall. Patients require close monitoring because LHIS may cause right or left outflow tract obstruction or superior vena cava obstruction, requiring cardiac surgical intervention.
