In order to develop uniform diagnostic standards and reporting terminology, the International Academy of Cytology and the American Society of Cytopathology have recommended the establishment of the International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (ISRSFC). ISRSFC has 5 diagnostic categories: non-diagnostic (ND), negative for malignancy (NFM), atypia of unknown significance (AUS), suspicious for malignancy (SFM), and malignant (MAL). So far, very few studies have evaluated the risk of malignancy (ROM) and performance characteristics (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic accuracy) of different categories.

Background Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is recommended by major guidelines for the removal of common bile duct (CBD) stones but is technically challenging in patients with low cardiopulmonary reserve and anatomic abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Purpose To compare percutaneous transhepatic papillary balloon dilation (PTPBD) with ERCP for CBD stone removal. Materials and Methods Participants with one to three CBD stones (largest stone ≤30 mm) and without intrahepatic bile duct or gallbladder stones were eligible for this prospective cohort study.

Background: At present, the relationship between thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) in relation to postmenstrual age (PMA) in preterm infants is still unclear, and there is no reliable standard thyroid hormone reference ranges, resulting in different diagnostic criteria for congenital hypothyroidism been used by different newborn screening programs and different countries.

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between TSH/FT4 and PMA in very preterm infants (VPIs) born with gestational age (GA) <32 weeks and to derive thyroid function reference charts based on PMA.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed on VPIs born with GA<32 weeks and born in or transferred to the 27 neonatal intensive care units from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019.

To seek novel prognostic biomarkers for testicular germ cell tumour (TGCT) and investigate the tumour immune microenvironment, we identified critical differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by overlapping GSE1818 dataset from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was used to investigate key modules and hub genes. Functional enrichment analysis was performed to investigate the underlying molecular functions of the DEGs in TGCT development and progression.

Overexpression of miR-1225 promotes the progression of breast cancer, resulting in poor prognosis.

Clin Exp Med

May 2021

Department of Breast Surgery, China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University, No. 126 Xi'antai Avenue, Changchun City, 130033, Jilin Province, China.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with metastasis as the principal cause of mortality. MiR-1225 has been reported to play roles in the progression of various cancers, but its role in breast cancer was unclear. The expression of miR-1225 was investigated in breast cancer tissues and cells by quantitative real-time PCR.

National Clinical Research Center of Respiratory Diseases,Center for Respiratory Diseases, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing, China.

Background: The study was to evaluate initial antimicrobial regimen and clinical outcomes and to explore risk factors for clinical failure (CF) in elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

Methods: 3011 hospitalized elderly patients were enrolled from 13 national teaching hospitals between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014 initiated by the CAP-China network. Risk factors for CF were screened by multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Objective: N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) polymorphism could participate in the metabolism of carcinogens through regulating the activity of a series of critical enzymes. However, the effects of NAT2 polymorphism on bladder cancer (BCa) risk were still inconclusive. In order to illustrate whether NAT2 polymorphism may influence the susceptibility to BCa, we conducted this updated meta-analysis.

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common chromosomal abnormal heart disease. The pathophysiological mechanism of HCM is complex. Several studies have suggested that the level of Soluble ST2 (sST2) may be a biomarker of chronic systolic heart failure, however, the role of sST2 in HCM remains unclear.

The Role of MIF-173G/C Gene Polymorphism in the Susceptibility of Autoimmune Diseases.

Mediators Inflamm

July 2021

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Binzhou Medical University Hospital, 661 Second Huanghe Road, Binzhou 256603, China.

Some certain genetic polymorphisms have been considered to implicate in the pathogenesis and progression of autoimmune diseases and may predispose to an early stage of general autoimmune susceptibility. Recent studies have been conducted to investigate the association between macrophage migration inhibitory factor- (MIF-) 173G/C gene polymorphism and autoimmune diseases; however, the results were not exactly identical. In the present study, a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies was performed to estimate the relationship.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) have important roles in tumor progression in various human cancers. Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD)-mediated gene transfection has been considered a useful tool for improving cancer treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the role of miR-767 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and further analyze the effects of UTMD-mediated miR-767 inhibition on tumor progression.

Background: Although the anatomic difficulties of laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer have been resolved by hybrid transanal total mesorectal excision (h-taTME), a completely incisionless surgical procedure has not yet been developed. This study was performed to explore the efficacy of pure taTME (p-taTME) without laparoscopic assistance as a completely non-invasive surgical procedure for rectal cancer.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated all patients with rectal cancer who underwent p-taTME between December 2015 and April 2018.

BACKGROUND Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury is a pivotal cause of deaths due to cerebrovascular accident. Increased research efforts are needed to reveal the mechanism underlying its aggravation or alleviation. In this study, the effects of dexmedetomidine post-conditioning on the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-kappaB signaling pathway in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion rats was explored.

BACKGROUND Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the neurotrophic factors that modulate critical metabolic activities, including apoptosis, proliferation, and differentiation modulation. Although numerous studies have focused on the damaging effects of BDNF on neurons, the underlying relationship between these effects remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of BDNF on neuronal injury induced by ropivacaine and assessed whether it is related to the Akt signaling pathway.

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing, China; National Clinical Research Center of Respiratory Diseases, Beijing, China; Clinical Center for Pulmonary Infections, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; Tsinghua University-Peking University Joint Center for Life Sciences, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Background/purpose: Severe infection with influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 virus is characterized by acute lung injury. The limited efficacy of anti-viral drugs indicates an urgent need for additional therapies. We have previously reported that neutralization of gamma interferon (IFN-γ) could significantly rescue the thymic atrophy induced by severe influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 infection in BALB/c mice.
