The progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with microstructural alterations in neural pathways, contributing to both motor and cognitive decline. However, conflicting findings have emerged due to the use of heterogeneous methods in small studies. Here we performed a large diffusion MRI study in PD, integrating data from 17 cohorts worldwide, to identify stage-specific profiles of white matter differences.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates genetic variants linked to outer retinal tubulation (ORT) by analyzing the prevalence and clinical consequences of ORT in patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs).
  • A cohort of 565 IRD patients underwent SD-OCT imaging, revealing that 104 exhibited ORT, primarily associated with specific genetic variants, especially in RPE-specific and some non-RPE-specific genes.
  • The findings show a strong correlation between ORT presence and IRDs caused by RPE-specific and non-RPE-specific genes, while no cases of ORT were found in patients with photoreceptor-specific gene variants.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the effects of human amniotic fluid stem cells (hAFSCs) on bladder function in rats with partial bladder outlet obstruction (pBOO).
  • Thirty-six female rats were tested, with some receiving hAFSC injections and others not, while several cellular factors related to bladder function and health were measured over two different time periods.
  • The findings indicate that hAFSCs can improve bladder dysfunction by inhibiting certain signaling pathways and reducing collagen buildup, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits for patients with bladder outlet obstruction.

Leveraging Edge Computing for Video Data Streaming in UAV-Based Emergency Response Systems.

Sensors (Basel)

August 2024

Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Chang Gung University, Guishan, Taoyuan 33302, Taiwan.

The rapid advancement of technology has greatly expanded the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in wireless communication and edge computing domains. The primary objective of UAVs is the seamless transfer of video data streams to emergency responders. However, live video data streaming is inherently latency dependent, wherein the value of the video frames diminishes with any delay in the stream.

Background: The population of adults with congenital heart diseases (ACHDs) is expanding, and atrial fibrillation (AF) emerges as a crucial risk factor for ischemic stroke. However, the evidence regarding the impact of AF on the incidence of ischemic stroke in ACHDs remains limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and effect of AF among ACHDs and assess the suitability of the traditional CHA₂DS₂-VASc score in this specific population.

Department of Neurology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou Medical Center, College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan 333, Taiwan.

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by progressive involuntary chorea movements and cognitive decline. Recent research indicates that metabolic disturbance may play a role in its pathogenesis. Bile acids, produced during cholesterol metabolism in the liver, have been linked to neurodegenerative conditions.

Background:  One of the most devastating deficits of facial paralysis is eyelid dysfunction, which is controlled by the orbicularis oculi muscle (OOM), as it leads to loss of the protective mechanism of the eye. This study used a rat model to assess the functional outcomes of neurotized platysma muscle grafts (PMGs) for OOM replacement.

Methods:  Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats with iatrogenic right eyelid dysfunction were divided into five groups: one control group and four groups utilizing PMG with different sources of nerve innervation.

Electronic address:

Background: Pentoxifylline is administrated to improve the hemodynamics of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite the improvement of capillary blood flow velocity in retina after pentoxifylline use, no evidence has been provided to prove the protective effect for diabetic retinopathy (DR). Therefore, this study aimed to assess the risk of DR in pentoxifylline users with CKD and diabetes mellitus (DM).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of hepatic functional reserve and tumor progression on overall survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing combination immunotherapy with atezolizumab and bevacizumab.
  • Out of 571 patients analyzed, a significant portion developed tumor progression, while a smaller group experienced hepatic decompensation, both of which greatly affected survival outcomes.
  • Key predictors of poor survival included hepatic decompensation, advanced tumor progression, and specific baseline liver function metrics, with effective antiviral treatment showing potential protective effects against decompensation in patients with viral causes of HCC.

Traumatic injury to the spinal cord can lead to significant, permanent disability. Mammalian spinal cords are not capable of regeneration; in contrast, adult zebrafish are capable of such regeneration, fully recovering motor function. Understanding the mechanisms underlying zebrafish neuroregeneration may provide useful information regarding endogenous regenerative potential and aid in the development of therapeutic strategies in humans.

Aim: To assess if early change in albuminuria was linked to an initial change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and long-term kidney outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) receiving sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

Methods: Using a medical database from a multicentre healthcare institute in Taiwan, we retrospectively enrolled 8310 people receiving SGLT2 inhibitors from 1 June 2016 to 31 December 2021. We compared the risks of initial eGFR decline, major adverse renal events (MARE; >50% eGFR reduction or development of end-stage kidney disease), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), or hospitalization for heart failure (HHF) using a Cox proportional hazards model.

May 2024

Department of Neurology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou Medical Center, Kueishan, Taoyuan 333, Taiwan.

Trinucleotide repeat expansion disorders, a diverse group of neurodegenerative diseases, are caused by abnormal expansions within specific genes. Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and tolerability of two treatments for chronic migraine: CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and onabotulinumtoxinA.
  • It included 649 chronic migraine patients and found that CGRP mAbs reduced monthly migraine days more significantly than onabotulinumtoxinA and had a higher responder rate.
  • Both treatments were well-tolerated, with fewer adverse events reported for CGRP mAbs, but further studies are needed to confirm these results.
