Intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) has been applied and studied in a variety of vitreoretinal surgeries for its feasibility, safety, and outcomes for years. Common scenarios include membrane peeling procedures, retinal detachments, choroidal-retinal biopsies, Argus implants, and subretinal injections. iOCT offers the surgeon a better understanding of the retinal microarchitectural changes and timely intraoperative feedback, directing a future view of precision surgery.

Background: Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is standard of care for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma that is amenable to embolisation; however, median progression-free survival is still approximately 7 months. We aimed to assess whether adding durvalumab, with or without bevacizumab, might improve progression-free survival.
Methods: In this multiregional, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study (EMERALD-1), adults aged 18 years or older with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma amenable to embolisation, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1 at enrolment, and at least one measurable intrahepatic lesion per modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) were enrolled at 157 medical sites including research centres and general and specialist hospitals in 18 countries.

Background: The negative impacts of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM) are well known. Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) have significantly higher blood cadmium levels (BCLs) than healthy individuals.

Background & Aims: Flares after nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) cessation are common and potentially harmful. Predictors of flares are required for risk stratification and to guide off-treatment follow-up.
Method: This multicenter cohort study included virally suppressed patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who were hepatitis B e antigen negative at NA cessation.

Background: The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is currently the gold standard for autologous breast reconstruction. In cases where the DIEP is contraindicated, the profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap is now the preferred second-line option in our institution. The PAP flap poses unique challenges to the reconstructive surgeon, especially in Asian women with low body mass index (BMI).

This study aimed to compare ocular torsion measurements to investigate normative objective cyclotorsion values in a population of healthy, full-term and preterm children. The participants enrolled in this study had an age range of 3-12 years and were divided into two groups, full-term (gestational age (GA) > 37 weeks) and preterm without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (GA ≤ 37 weeks). The disc-center-fovea angle (DFA) was used to evaluate ocular torsion using two different imaging modalities: optical coherence tomography (OCT) with a 55-degree field of view (FV) and conventional fundus photography (CFP) with a 45-degree FV.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are serious complication for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), often resulting in poor functional outcomes. However, no existing model can specifically predict HAI in AIS patients. Therefore, we employed the Gradient Boosting matching learning algorithm to establish predictive models for HAI occurrence in AIS patients and poor 30-day functional outcomes (modified Rankin Scale > 2) in AIS patients with HAI by analyzing electronic health records from 6560 AIS patients.

Introduction: For patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), a true attack could be difficult to distinguish from chronic abdominal pain. This study focused on treatment responses from two patients with confirmed elevated biochemical data (delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), porphobilinogen (PBG)) and clinical evidence for acute attacks before starting givosiran.
Methods: Data from patients who participated in the phase III givosiran trial in Taiwan between May 2018 and May 2021 were reviewed.

Background And Aims: A higher incidence of extra-pancreatic malignancies (EPMs) in patients with pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) than in the general population has been shown in several studies. We suppose that EPMs also occur after IPMN has been diagnosed, but few reports have discussed the risk factors that have been identified, except for old age, which was only noted in one study. Our study aims to recognize the distribution of EPMs in Taiwanese patients with a longer duration of follow-up and investigate the risk factors to predict EPMs in IPMN patients.

Background: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) present progressive deterioration in both motor and non-motor manifestations. However, the absence of clinical biomarkers for disease progression hinders clinicians from tailoring treatment strategies effectively.
Objectives: To identify electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker that can track disease progression in PD.

Objective: Hemodynamic monitoring via right heart catheterization (RHC) is critical for managing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with heart failure or cardiogenic shock. However, the prognostic value of RHC-derived hemodynamic indices in ACS patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) but without heart failure or shock remains uncertain.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study included 1151 consecutive ACS patients who underwent RHC during hospitalization from 2007 to 2016.

Orbital cellulitis and severe preseptal cellulitis are critical periocular infections with potential vision- and life-threatening implications. The COVID-19 pandemic is hypothesized to have had an influence on their presentation and pathogenesis; however, the real impact remains unclear. In this retrospective multicenter cohort study from January 2017 to December 2022, we analyzed 1285 cases with preseptal or orbital cellulitis in pre-pandemic (2017-2019) and pandemic (2020-2022) cohorts.

Background: Data regarding the distribution of left ventricular ejection fraction among patients with newly diagnosed heart failure (HF) and the outcomes of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in Taiwan are limited.
Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed HF were identified from a multi-institutional database between 2016 and 2020. Outcomes were compared between patients with HFpEF and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) after propensity score matching (PSM).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks the sixth most common malignancy but the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. Significant breakthroughs have been made in systemic treatment for HCC over the past two decades, which have improved treatment outcomes. In addition to multiple tyrosine kinase inhibitors (mTKIs), immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and antiangiogenic drugs are increasingly being applied.

Aims: This study aimed to identify metabolic markers for diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Materials And Methods: Blood metabolite levels in the amino acid, biogenic amine, sphingomyelin, phosphatidylcholine (PC), carnitines, and hexose classes were analyzed in nondiabetic control (n = 27), T2DM without DPNP (n = 58), and T2DM with DPNP (n = 29) using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Variable importance projection (VIP) evaluation by partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed on clinical parameters and metabolites.
