Objective: There is considerable variation in the travel required for a patient with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) to receive a diagnosis. The impact of this travel on the late diagnosis of cancer remains unexamined, even though presenting stage is the strongest predictor of mortality. Our aim is to determine whether travel time affects HNSCC stage at diagnosis independently of other risk factors, and whether this association is affected by socioeconomic status.

Kaposi sarcoma.

Nat Rev Dis Primers

January 2019

Leidos Biomedical Research, AIDS and Cancer Virus Program, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Frederick, MD, USA.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) gained public attention as an AIDS-defining malignancy; its appearance on the skin was a highly stigmatizing sign of HIV infection during the height of the AIDS epidemic. The widespread introduction of effective antiretrovirals to control HIV by restoring immunocompetence reduced the prevalence of AIDS-related KS, although KS does occur in individuals with well-controlled HIV infection. KS also presents in individuals without HIV infection in older men (classic KS), in sub-Saharan Africa (endemic KS) and in transplant recipients (iatrogenic KS).

Objectives: Self-collection of genital specimens for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (hrHPV) detection may increase cervical cancer screening uptake. We hypothesized that women would prefer self-collection to clinician-collection of genital specimens. To test this hypothesis, and women's preference between two different self-collection approaches, a total of 199 women were enrolled in a cross-sectional study in Mombasa, Kenya.

Background: Recent research suggests that sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been declining among US children aged 2-18 y. However, most studies focused on changes in mean intake, ignore high SSB consumers and do not examine intake among vulnerable groups and, including adolescents, low-income households, and several racial/ethnic minorities.

Objective: The aim was to estimate usual SSB intake from NHANES surveys from 2003-2004 to 2013-2014 to examine shifts at both the median and 90th percentile among US children, evaluating the extent to which intake disparities in total SSBs and subtypes have persisted.

Validity of Social Support Scales Utilized Among HIV-Infected and HIV-Affected Populations: A Systematic Review.

AIDS Behav

August 2019

Department of Health Behavior, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 302 Rosenau Hall, 135 Dauer Drive, CB7440, Chapel Hill, NC, 27599, USA.

Social support enhances self-management and prevention of behaviors and is typically assessed using self-report scales; however, little is known about the validity of these scales in HIV-infected or affected populations. This systematic review aims to identify available validated social support scales used in HIV-infected and HIV-affected populations. A systematic literature search using key search terms was conducted in electronic databases.

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, implemented in 2006, increased managed care options for seniors. It introduced insurance plans for prescription drug coverage for all Medicare beneficiaries, whether they were enrolled in FFS or managed care (Medicare Advantage) plans. The availability of drug coverage beginning in 2006 served to free up budgets for FFS Medicare enrollees that could be used to make copayments for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening using endoscopy (colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy).

Multidisciplinary Management of Oligometastatic Soft Tissue Sarcoma.

Am Soc Clin Oncol Educ Book

May 2018

From the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology-Oncology, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; Orthopaedic Oncology at Aurora Cancer Care, Orthopaedic Surgery, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI; Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Aurora Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI; Department of Radiology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC; Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) encompass a group of rare but heterogeneous diseases. Nevertheless, many patients, particularly those with oligometastatic disease can benefit from thoughtful multimodality evaluation and treatment regardless of the STS subtype. Here, we review surgical, interventional radiology, radiation, and chemotherapy approaches to maximize disease palliation and improve survival, including occasionally long-term disease-free survival.

Article Synopsis
  • RAP GTPases are key regulators in platelet function, with a focus on the isoform RAP1B, which is found to be partially involved in platelet activation but not crucial for platelet count.
  • Mice with a specific deletion of RAP isoforms displayed significant abnormalities in platelet production and functions, such as impaired aggregation and clot retraction.
  • The study highlights that while RAP signaling is vital for platelet integrin activation and production, it is not necessary for maintaining vascular integrity during development or inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a rare and aggressive ovarian cancer affecting young women, primarily caused by the loss of specific protein subunits (SMARCA4 and SMARCA2).
  • Researchers performed extensive drug screenings and identified ponatinib, a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) inhibitor, as the most effective treatment for SCCOHT, showing selectivity against cancer cells compared to normal cells.
  • In preclinical models, ponatinib significantly reduced tumor growth and volume, leading to suggestions for clinical trials to explore its effectiveness in treating SCCOHT in patients.
