A common feature in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is the formation of a nonocclusive intraluminal thrombus (ILT) in regions of aortic dilation. Platelets are known to maintain hemostasis and propagate thrombosis through several redundant activation mechanisms, yet the role of platelet activation in the pathogenesis of AAA-associated ILT is still poorly understood. Thus, we sought to investigate how platelet activation affects the pathogenesis of AAA.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) can improve survival rates for nontraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, when ECPR is indicated over 50% of potential candidates are unable to qualify in the current hospital-based system due to geographic limitations. This study employs a Geographic Information System (GIS) model to estimate the number of ECPR eligible patients within the United States in the current hospital-based system, a prehospital ECPR ground-based system, and a prehospital ECPR Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)-based system.

Cardiovascular disease affects 37% of Hispanic women and is the leading cause of death among Hispanic women in the United States. Hispanic women have a higher burden of cardiovascular risk factors, are disproportionally affected by social determinants of health, and face additional barriers related to immigration, such as discrimination, language proficiency, and acculturation. Despite this, Hispanic women show lower rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality compared with non-Hispanic White women.

Article Synopsis
  • Drug-coated balloons, specifically paclitaxel-coated balloons, show promise for treating coronary in-stent restenosis but previously lacked approval for U.S. use.
  • A clinical trial, involving 600 participants across 40 centers, compared the effectiveness of paclitaxel-coated balloons to uncoated ones in preventing target lesion failure one year post-treatment.
  • Results indicated that patients receiving the paclitaxel-coated balloon had significantly lower rates of target lesion revascularization and myocardial infarction compared to those with uncoated balloons, demonstrating the coated balloon's superiority (17.9% vs 28.6% failure rate).

Our objective was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the SYNERGY stent (Boston Scientific Corporation, Marlborough, Massachusetts) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The only drug-eluting stent approved for treatment of STEMI by the Food and Drug Administration is the Taxus stent (Boston Scientific) which is no longer commercially available, so further data are needed. The CLEAR (Colchicine and spironolactone in patients with myocardial infarction) SYNERGY stent registry was embedded into a larger randomized trial of patients with STEMI (n = 7,000), comparing colchicine versus placebo and spironolactone versus placebo.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are linked to long-term cardiovascular risks for women, though the reasons are not fully understood.
  • A study involving 5,168 Hispanic/Latina women revealed that 14% had a history of de novo HDP, which was associated with lower left ventricle ejection fraction and higher risks of abnormal cardiac geometry.
  • Findings indicate that previous HDP can lead to measurable cardiac issues in women, with current hypertension only partially explaining these effects.
