Echocardiography in the neonatal unit: current status and future prospects.

Introduction: Traditionally echocardiography was used by pediatric cardiologists to diagnose congenital heart defects in neonates. Formalized neonatal hemodynamic fellowships have been established where neonatologists acquire advanced echocardiographic skills to gain anatomical, physiological, and hemodynamic information in real time and utilize this information in making a timely and accurate physiology-based clinical decision.

Key Points: Despite a high need and interest in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in trainees and faculty of Pediatric Nephrology, the majority are not receiving POCUS training. There is a need to establish a structured pediatric nephrology POCUS program for clinicians and fellows. This study suggests a blueprint of POCUS curriculum which can serve as a foundation for POCUS education in pediatric nephrology centers worldwide.

Correlation between Dermatology Life Quality Index and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index in Patients with Psoriasis: A Cross-sectional Global Healthcare Study on Psoriasis.

Quality of life impairment in dermatology patients and severity of psoriasis are quantified by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), respectively. The aim of this study is to compare the correlation between PASI and DLQI in patients from different geographical areas and to identify predictors of high DLQI across geographical regions. Correlations between PASI and DLQI were evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation tests and quantile regression.

Cathepsin B as a key regulator of ferroptosis in microglia following intracerebral hemorrhage.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke marked by elevated mortality and disability rates. Recently, mounting evidence suggests a significant role of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of ICH. Through a combination of bioinformatics analysis and basic experiments, our goal is to identify the primary cell types and key molecules implicated in ferroptosis post-ICH.

Background: FLASH Radiotherapy (RT) is an emergent cancer RT modality where an entire therapeutic dose is delivered at more than 1000 times higher dose rate than conventional RT. For clinical trials to be conducted safely, a precise and fast beam monitor that can generate out-of-tolerance beam interrupts is required. This paper describes the overall concept and provides results from a prototype ultra-fast, scintillator-based beam monitor for both proton and electron beam FLASH applications.

Staged Resection of Difficult-to-Treat Intracranial Meningiomas: A Systematic Review of the Indications, Surgical Approaches, and Postoperative Outcomes.

 Meningiomas-the most common extra-axial tumors-are benign, slow-growing dural-based lesions that can involve multiple cranial fossae and can progress insidiously for years until coming to clinical attention secondary to compression of adjacent neurovascular structures. For complex, multicompartmental lesions, multistaged surgeries have been increasingly shown to enhance maximal safe resection while minimizing adverse sequela. Here, we systematically review the extant literature to highlight the merits of staged resection.

The Efficacy of Real-time Computer-aided Detection of Colonic Neoplasia in Community Practice: A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background & Aims: The use of computer-aided detection (CADe) has increased the adenoma detection rates (ADRs) during colorectal cancer (CRC) screening/surveillance in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) but has not shown benefit in real-world implementation studies. We performed a single-center pragmatic RCT to evaluate the impact of real-time CADe on ADRs in colonoscopy performed by community gastroenterologists.

Methods: We enrolled 1100 patients undergoing colonoscopy for CRC screening, surveillance, positive fecal-immunohistochemical tests, and diagnostic indications at one community-based center from September 2022 to March 2023.

Due to the assumed plasticity of immature brain, early in life brain alterations are thought to lead to better recoveries in comparison to the mature brain. Despite clinical needs, how neuronal networks and associated behaviors are affected by early in life brain stresses, such as pediatric concussions, have been overlooked. Here we provide first evidence in mice that a single early in life concussion durably increases neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex into adulthood, disrupting neuronal integration while the animal is performing sensory-related tasks.

Substantiating and Adopting Lung Ultrasound Scores to Predict Surfactant Need in Preterm Neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome within an Institution.

Objective:  Administering surfactant timely and appropriately is important to minimize lung injury but remains challenging in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome. The published literature supports that lung ultrasound (LUS) score can predict surfactant need. Neonatal LUS scanning specification and parameter setting guidelines have been recently published for standardization.
