Introduction: Traditionally echocardiography was used by pediatric cardiologists to diagnose congenital heart defects in neonates. Formalized neonatal hemodynamic fellowships have been established where neonatologists acquire advanced echocardiographic skills to gain anatomical, physiological, and hemodynamic information in real time and utilize this information in making a timely and accurate physiology-based clinical decision.
Area Covered: Differences between a comprehensive formal structural echocardiography, neonatologist performed targeted echocardiography and limited assessment on point-of-care-ultrasonography for specific indications have been covered.

Background: Invasive mechanical ventilation contributes to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), the most common complication of prematurity and the leading respiratory cause of childhood morbidity. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) may limit invasive ventilation exposure and can be either synchronized or non-synchronized (NS). Pooled data suggest synchronized forms may be superior.

Despite the increase in postgraduate MedEd fellowships in emergency medicine (EM), there is no consistently applied competency framework. We sought to develop entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for EM MedEd fellows.

Targeted neonatal echocardiography (TNE) is essential when approaching hemodynamic instability in neonates. Competency in this field requires standardized training, including robust hands-on experience. Proficiency in understanding the key elements of ultrasound knobology is indispensable for optimal acquisition of imaging.

Key Points: Despite a high need and interest in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in trainees and faculty of Pediatric Nephrology, the majority are not receiving POCUS training. There is a need to establish a structured pediatric nephrology POCUS program for clinicians and fellows. This study suggests a blueprint of POCUS curriculum which can serve as a foundation for POCUS education in pediatric nephrology centers worldwide.

Quality of life impairment in dermatology patients and severity of psoriasis are quantified by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), respectively. The aim of this study is to compare the correlation between PASI and DLQI in patients from different geographical areas and to identify predictors of high DLQI across geographical regions. Correlations between PASI and DLQI were evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation tests and quantile regression.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke marked by elevated mortality and disability rates. Recently, mounting evidence suggests a significant role of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of ICH. Through a combination of bioinformatics analysis and basic experiments, our goal is to identify the primary cell types and key molecules implicated in ferroptosis post-ICH.

Background: FLASH Radiotherapy (RT) is an emergent cancer RT modality where an entire therapeutic dose is delivered at more than 1000 times higher dose rate than conventional RT. For clinical trials to be conducted safely, a precise and fast beam monitor that can generate out-of-tolerance beam interrupts is required. This paper describes the overall concept and provides results from a prototype ultra-fast, scintillator-based beam monitor for both proton and electron beam FLASH applications.

Meningiomas-the most common extra-axial tumors-are benign, slow-growing dural-based lesions that can involve multiple cranial fossae and can progress insidiously for years until coming to clinical attention secondary to compression of adjacent neurovascular structures. For complex, multicompartmental lesions, multistaged surgeries have been increasingly shown to enhance maximal safe resection while minimizing adverse sequela. Here, we systematically review the extant literature to highlight the merits of staged resection.

Background & Aims: The use of computer-aided detection (CADe) has increased the adenoma detection rates (ADRs) during colorectal cancer (CRC) screening/surveillance in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) but has not shown benefit in real-world implementation studies. We performed a single-center pragmatic RCT to evaluate the impact of real-time CADe on ADRs in colonoscopy performed by community gastroenterologists.
Methods: We enrolled 1100 patients undergoing colonoscopy for CRC screening, surveillance, positive fecal-immunohistochemical tests, and diagnostic indications at one community-based center from September 2022 to March 2023.

Navigating the healthcare conundrum in the Blue Zone of Loma Linda, California, requires understanding the unique factors that make this region stand out in terms of health and longevity. But more important is understanding the healthcare system sustaining the Blue Zone in Loma Linda, California. In an era marked by soaring healthcare costs and diminishing reimbursement rates, hospitals and physicians face an unprecedented challenge: providing excellent patient care while maintaining financial sustainability.

Oral incompetence (OI) following facial nerve injury or sacrifice remains a frustrating problem for patients and clinicians alike. Dynamic procedures for facial paralysis often do not fully address OI and static surgeries are frequently needed. Current static options frequently involved multiple facial incisions.

Background: European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) is the European community of clinicians providing care to the injured and critically ill surgical patient. ESTES has several interlinked missions - (1) the promotion of optimal emergency surgical care through networked advocacy, (2) promulgation of relevant clinical cognitive and technical skills, and (3) the advancement of scientific inquiry that closes knowledge gaps, iteratively improves upon surgical and perioperative practice, and guides decision-making rooted in scientific evidence. Faced with multitudinous opportunities for clinical research, ESTES undertook an exercise to determine member priorities for surgical research in the short-to-medium term; these research priorities were presented to a panel of experts to inform a 'road map' narrative review which anchored these research priorities in the contemporary surgical literature.

encodes Feline leukemia virus subgroup C receptor 1 (FLVCR1), a solute carrier (SLC) transporter within the Major Facilitator Superfamily. FLVCR1 is a widely expressed transmembrane protein with plasma membrane and mitochondrial isoforms implicated in heme, choline, and ethanolamine transport. While knockout mice die with skeletal malformations and defective erythropoiesis reminiscent of Diamond-Blackfan anemia, rare biallelic pathogenic variants are linked to childhood or adult-onset neurodegeneration of the retina, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system.

Due to the assumed plasticity of immature brain, early in life brain alterations are thought to lead to better recoveries in comparison to the mature brain. Despite clinical needs, how neuronal networks and associated behaviors are affected by early in life brain stresses, such as pediatric concussions, have been overlooked. Here we provide first evidence in mice that a single early in life concussion durably increases neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex into adulthood, disrupting neuronal integration while the animal is performing sensory-related tasks.

Objective: Administering surfactant timely and appropriately is important to minimize lung injury but remains challenging in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome. The published literature supports that lung ultrasound (LUS) score can predict surfactant need. Neonatal LUS scanning specification and parameter setting guidelines have been recently published for standardization.

Unlabelled: Intussusception is the telescoping of bowel into an adjacent segment of bowel and has an associated risk for bowel ischemia and perforation. The classic triad of abdominal pain, blood in stool, and an abdominal mass is present in less than 40% of pediatric cases and is less common in older children.1 Ultrasound has a high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of intussusception, and once diagnosed, treatment modalities include reduction by either ultrasound or fluoroscopic guided air or hydrostatic enema.
