Women speaker representation at SAGES annual meetings: a cross-sectional analysis.

Background: Gender representation trends at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Annual Meetings and the effect of the 2018 'We R SAGES' initiatives are unknown. We assessed gender trends in oral presentations at the SAGES Annual Meeting between 2012 and 2022 with a focus on assessing the impact of the 2018 initiatives.

Methods: Abstracts selected for oral presentations from 2012 to 2022 were reviewed for presenter and first, second, and senior author gender.

Logical Fallacies in Missed Diagnosis of Stridorous Patients: A Case Report.

Tracheal stenosis and paradoxical vocal fold motion are both common laryngological diagnoses that can present with similar symptoms of dyspnea. Co-morbid psychiatric issues can complicate diagnostic accuracy and lead to logical fallacies in the attribution of symptom etiology. We present a case of a 38-year-old female who presented repeatedly to the emergency department with respiratory distress, inspiratory stridor, wheezing, and anxiety.

Stress and value: the student perspective on utilizing real vs. actor patients in objective structured clinical examinations.

Background: Studies have shown objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) to be one of the most reliable tools in assessing clinical performance; however in Pediatrics they primarily use manikins, simulators or parent actors which limits the comprehensiveness of the assessment. In our Pediatric Clerkship, medical students are evaluated using a standardized rubric during a clinical evaluation exercise (CEX) with real patients. This study assessed medical students' perceived stress levels and the educational value of the CEX compared an OSCE.

Analyzing Potential Interactions Between Complementary and Alternative Therapies, Over-the-Counter, and Prescription Medications in the Older Population.

Background: The escalating use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) raises concerns, particularly among geriatric patients taking multiple medications. Notably, the doubled chance of major drug interactions between prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs in older adults underscores the need for further research. This study aimed to evaluate clinically significant CAM and prescription medication interactions in a geriatric clinic, emphasizing the growing importance of understanding CAM implications in health care.

Morphometric analysis of cervical disc space height and interpedicular distance using computed tomography.

Background: This study utilized computed tomography (CT) to establish normative radiographic morphometric measurements of cervical disc space height (DSH) and interpedicular distance (IPD) and document the influence of patient sex, race, ethnicity, and anthropometric characteristics.

Methods: Cervical CTs of 1000 patients between 18 and 35 years of age without known spinal pathology were reviewed. Statistical analyses included the assessment of associations between patient height, weight, sex, race, and ethnicity regarding DSH and IPD.

Physiological and pathological roles of caveolins in the central nervous system.

Caveolins are a family of transmembrane proteins located in caveolae, small lipid raft invaginations of the plasma membrane. The roles of caveolin-enriched lipid rafts are diverse, and include mechano-protection, lipid homeostasis, metabolism, transport, and cell signaling. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) and other caveolins were described in endothelial cells and later in other cell types of the central nervous system (CNS), including neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and pericytes.

Comparison and precision of visceral adipose tissue measurement techniques in a multisite longitudinal study using MRI.

Background: Measurement of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered accurate and safe. Single slice measurements perform similar to volumetric measurements for cross-sectional observation studies but may not perform as well for longitudinal studies. This study compared the performance of single slice to volumetric VAT measurements in a prospective longitudinal study.

Background: In utero cigarette smoking/nicotine exposure during pregnancy significantly affects fetal development and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease late in life. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that fetal nicotine aerosol exposure reprograms ischemia-sensitive gene expressions, resulting in increased heart susceptibility to ischemic injury and cardiac dysfunction in adulthood.

Effects of spaceflight on the brain.

The number of long duration human spaceflights has increased substantially over the past 15 years, leading to the discovery of numerous effects on the CNS. Microgravity results in headward fluid shifts, ventricular expansion, an upward shift of the brain within the skull, and remodelling of grey and white matter. The fluid changes are correlated with changes to perivascular space and spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome.

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) has recently gained attention in the field of regenerative medicine because of the beneficial effects of this molecule on stem cell proliferation and migration. Furthermore, PGE2 has the ability to mitigate immune rejection and fibrosis. In the colon and kidney, PGE2 induces YAP1, a transcription factor critical for cardiac regeneration.

miRNA signatures underlie chemoresistance in the gemcitabine-resistant pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell line MIA PaCa-2 GR.

Chemotherapy resistance remains a significant challenge in the treatment of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC), particularly in relation to gemcitabine (Gem), a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to influence cancer progression and chemoresistance. This study investigates the association between miRNA expression profiles and gemcitabine resistance in PDAC.

Evaluation of somatic copy number variation detection by NGS technologies and bioinformatics tools on a hyper-diploid cancer genome.

Background: Copy number variation (CNV) is a key genetic characteristic for cancer diagnostics and can be used as a biomarker for the selection of therapeutic treatments. Using data sets established in our previous study, we benchmark the performance of cancer CNV calling by six most recent and commonly used software tools on their detection accuracy, sensitivity, and reproducibility. In comparison to other orthogonal methods, such as microarray and Bionano, we also explore the consistency of CNV calling across different technologies on a challenging genome.

Lupus nephritis: management challenges during pregnancy.

Lupus nephritis (LN), a severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), leads to significant kidney inflammation and damage and drastically increases mortality risk. Predominantly impacting women in their reproductive years, LN poses specific risks during pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, growth restrictions, stillbirth, and preterm delivery, exacerbated by lupus activity, specific antibodies, and pre-existing conditions like hypertension. Effective management of LN during pregnancy is crucial and involves carefully balancing disease control with the safety of the fetus.

Immunotherapy in a case of low titre GAD65 antibody-associated spectrum neurological disorders.

We present a rare case of low titre GAD65 antibody-associated autoimmune encephalitis and status epilepticus in a young woman. She initially presented with left arm dystonic movements, contractures and status epilepticus. Due to the concern of autoimmune encephalitis and seizures, the patient received intravenous immunoglobulin empirically.

Delayed-Release Budesonide in a Patient With Progressive IgA Nephropathy and Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease: A Case Report.

Delayed-release (DR) budesonide received expedited approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for reducing proteinuria in individuals with primary IgA nephropathy (IgAN) who are at significant risk of disease progression. The approval was based on clinical trials primarily involving patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) greater than 30 mL/min/1.73 m.

Artificial intelligence-based epigenomic, transcriptomic and histologic signatures of tobacco use in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) biomarker studies rarely employ multi-omic biomarker strategies and pertinent clinicopathologic characteristics to predict mortality. In this study we determine for the first time a combined epigenetic, gene expression, and histology signature that differentiates between patients with different tobacco use history (heavy tobacco use with ≥10 pack years vs. no tobacco use).
