Article Synopsis
  • The flat bark beetles, with around 70 species, mainly inhabit the Holarctic, Oriental, and Australasian realms, while only six species are found in South America, including one in Peru.
  • Two previously unrecorded species of cucujid beetles have now been identified in South America for the first time, specifically in the Pasco and Cusco and Junín Regions of Peru, using data from the iNaturalist platform.
  • This study also includes photographs of their habitats and provides a checklist of Cucujidae species currently documented in South America.

Aims: Synapses represent a major pathological target across a broad range of neurodegenerative conditions. Recent studies addressing molecular mechanisms regulating synaptic vulnerability and degeneration have relied heavily on invertebrate and mouse models. Whether similar molecular neuropathological changes underpin synaptic breakdown in large animal models and in human patients with neurodegenerative disease remains unclear.
