Plant-produced sulfoquinovose (SQ, 6-deoxy-6-sulfoglucose) is one of the most abundant sulfur-containing compounds in nature and its bacterial degradation plays an important role in the biogeochemical sulfur and carbon cycles and in all habitats where SQ is produced and degraded, particularly in gut microbiomes. Here, we report the enrichment and characterization of a strictly anaerobic SQ-degrading bacterial consortium that produces the C-sulfonate isethionate (ISE) as the major product but also the C-sulfonate 2,3-dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), with concomitant production of acetate and hydrogen (H). In the second step, the ISE was degraded completely to hydrogen sulfide (HS) when an additional electron donor (external H) was supplied to the consortium.

Microbial biofilms have recently emerged as a critical target for treating bacterial infections due to their crucial role in developing antibiotic resistance. The wide-spectrum activity of proteolytic enzymes makes them particularly suitable for disrupting biofilms formed by diverse bacterial species, including dual-species biofilms. In this study, we propose the Protease-Activator of Protein C (PAPC) of human blood plasma, an enzyme produced by the micromycete Aspergillus ochraceus, as a novel tool to degrade the protein scaffold of mono- or dual-species biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Reliable identification and precise quantification of microplastics pollution of the environment are essential prerequisites to comprehend the impact of microplastics on Earth's ecosystems. In this study, we propose a workflow to examine polyethylene terephthalate (PET) contamination of environmental surface waters by applying high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approaches. The detection of PET by high-resolution NMR spectroscopy enables the unambiguous identification and - at the same time - precise quantification at atomic resolution independent from the size of the particles obtained from surface waters.

Chernozem soil is a valuable resource and contains a great diversity of microorganisms that play a global role in the process of soil formation, the species diversity of which has changed over the last five years under the influence of different agrotechnologies. For the first time, under the conditions of the Central Chernozem region, grain and fallow crop rotation, studies using the DNA-metabarcoding method were carried out to study the taxonomic structure of bacteria, fungi, cyanobacteria, and microalgae communities in the arable horizon of typical medium loamy chernozem under winter wheat cultivation. A comparative analysis of the composition of the genotypes showed significant differences in the presented level of mineral nutrition of the soil NPK (60) and NPK (100) compared with the control variant.

Phage φ29 and related bacteriophages are currently the smallest known tailed viruses infecting various representatives of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. They are characterised by genomic content features and distinctive properties that are unique among known tailed phages; their characteristics include protein primer-driven replication and a packaging process characteristic of this group. Searches conducted using public genomic databases revealed in excess of 2000 entries, including bacteriophages, phage plasmids and sequences identified as being archaeal that share the characteristic features of phage φ29.

The dynamics of lung microbiota in tuberculosis remains poorly understood. Diversity studies of aquatic picoplankton (bacterioplankton) communities using size-class filtration, DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing of phylogenetic markers, require a robust methodological pipeline, since biases have been demonstrated essentially at all levels, including DNA extraction, primer choice and PCR. Even different filtration volumes of the same plankton sample and, thus, different biomass loading of the filters, can distort the sequencing results. In this study, we designed an Arduino microcontroller-based flowmeter that records the decrease of initial (maximal) flowrate as proxy for increasing biomass loading and clogging of filters during plankton filtration.

Tripartite biotic interactions are inherently complex, and the strong interdependence of species and often one-sided exploitation can make these systems vulnerable to extinction. The persistence of species depends then on the balance between exploitation and avoidance of exploitation beyond the point where sustainable resource use is no longer possible. We used this general prediction to test the potential role of trait evolution for persistence in a tripartite microbial system consisting of a marine heterotrophic flagellate preyed upon by a giant virus, which in turn is parasitized by a virophage.

Understanding the genetic structure of populations and the processes responsible for its spatial and temporal dynamics is vital for assessing species' adaptability and survival in changing environments. We investigate the genetic fingerprinting of blooming populations of the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata in the Gulf of Naples (Mediterranean Sea) from 2008 to 2020. A survey for bacteria of the genus Thiothrix indicated that they inhabited the area where the water of the Zmeiny geothermal spring (northern basin of Lake Baikal, Russia) mixed with the lake water. In the coastal zone of the lake oxygen (8.25 g/L) and hydrogen sulfide (up to 1 mg/L) were simultaneously present at sites of massive growth of these particular Thiothrix bacteria.
