Injury

April 2023

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Copenhagen University Hospital, Bispebjerg, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Introduction: The posterior approach (PA) for hemiarthroplasty (HA) in patients with femoral neck fracture (FFN) has a high risk of dislocation; however, by preserving the piriformis muscle, the dislocation rate could be lowered considerably. The aim of this study was to compare the surgical complications of the piriformis-preserving posterior approach (PPPA) and the PA in patients with FNF treated with HA.

Methods: On 1 January 2019, the PPPA was introduced at two hospitals as the new treatment standard.

Background: Whether trochanteric hip fractures (AO/OTA 31-A) should be treated with an intramedullary nail (IMN) or sliding hip screw (SHS) is debated. Recent studies suggest an association between IMN and excess mortality rates compared to SHS, but higher quality studies fail to show this association. Furthermore, there is an increased usage of IMN with sparse evidence supporting this rise.

A variability in response of osteoclasts to zoledronic acid is mediated by smoking-associated modification in the DNA methylome.

Clin Epigenetics

March 2023

Clinical Cell Biology, Pathology Research Unit, Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, J. B. Winsløvs Vej 25, 1st Floor, 5000, Odense C, Denmark.

Background: Clinical trials have shown zoledronic acid as a potent bisphosphonate in preventing bone loss, but with varying potency between patients. Human osteoclasts ex vivo reportedly displayed a variable sensitivity to zoledronic acid > 200-fold, determined by the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50), with cigarette smoking as one of the reported contributors to this variation. To reveal the molecular basis of the smoking-mediated variation on treatment sensitivity, we performed a DNA methylome profiling on whole blood cells from 34 healthy female blood donors.

Background: Diarrhoea remains a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in low-income countries (LICs). The frequency of diarrhoeal episodes may vary by season, yet few prospective cohort studies have examined seasonal variation among various diarrhoeal pathogens using multiplex qPCR to analyse bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens.

Methods: We combined our recent qPCR data of diarrhoeal pathogens (nine bacterial, five viral and four parasitic) among Guinea-Bissauan children under five years old with individual background data, dividing by season.

Department of Surgery, Odense University Hospital, Svendborg, Denmark; Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Background: Population-based screening for colorectal cancer by a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is recommended by the European Union. Detectable faecal haemoglobin can indicate colorectal neoplasia as well as other conditions. A positive FIT predicts an increased risk of death from colorectal cancer but might also predict an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Background: Follow-up programs for gynecological cancer patients are currently under revision. There is limited evidence that traditional follow-up and clinical examinations improve survival in an early-stage gynecological setting. Further, traditional follow-up programs fail to accommodate the patient's need for psychosocial and sexual supportive care and to actively involve patients and their relatives in the follow-up process.
