Background: Genomic disorders caused by copy number variations (CNVs) are prevalent in patients with kidney disease; however, their contribution to chronic kidney failure (KF) of undetermined aetiology (uKF) is unclear. We screened patients with uKF aged 50 years or younger to establish the prevalence of causative CNVs.
Methods: We enrolled patients with an onset of KF ≤50 years from suspected undetermined aetiology for initial review of medical records to exclude patients with clear-cut clinical or histopathological kidney diagnoses or patients with already established genetic kidney diseases.

Tumor budding, a biomarker traditionally evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, has gained recognition as a prognostic biomarker for stage II colon cancer. Nevertheless, while H&E staining offers valuable insights, its limitations prompt the utilization of pan-cytokeratin immunohistochemistry (IHC). Consequently, this study seeks to evaluate the prognostic significance of tumor budding using IHC in a contemporary cohort of stage II colon cancer patients, aiming to deepen our understanding of this critical facet in cancer prognosis.

Community-acquired pneumonia is a common cause of acute hospitalisation. Identifying patients with community-acquired pneumonia among patients suspected of having the disease can be a challenge, which causes unnecessary antibiotic treatment. We investigated whether the circulatory pulmonary injury markers surfactant protein D (SP-D), Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6), and Club cell protein 16 (CC16) could help identify patients with community-acquired pneumonia upon acute admission.

Elevated levels of CNS-derived serum proteins are associated with poor outcome in traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the value of adding acute serum biomarker levels to common clinical outcome predictors lacks evaluation. We analyzed admission serum samples for Total-Tau (T-Tau), Neurofilament light chain (Nfl), Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) in a cohort of 396 trauma patients including 240 patients with TBI. We assessed the independent association of biomarkers with 1-year mortality and 6-12 months Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE) score, as well as the additive and cumulative value of biomarkers on Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Marshall Score for outcome prediction.

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, can be challenging to diagnose, and treatment outcomes are difficult to predict. In the NORDTREAT cohort study, a Nordic prospective multicentre study, we aim to identify novel molecular biomarkers of diagnostic value by assessing the diagnostic test accuracy (cross-sectionally), as well as the prognostic utility when used as prognostic markers in the long-term (cohort study). In the diagnostic test accuracy study, the primary outcome is a successful diagnosis using one or more novel index tests at baseline compared with the ECCO criteria as the reference standard.
