Background And Purpose:  Metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects more than 60% of the patients having a hip or knee arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis. As it is debated whether metabolic syndrome increases the risk of complications, we aimed to investigate the length of stay (LOS) and risk of readmission at 30 and 90 days after surgery, including causes of readmission.

Methods:  We conducted a prospective cohort study of 2,901 patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty from May 2017 to November 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the effectiveness of the CAC-score and 19 biomarkers in predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, suggesting the CAC-score adds value beyond traditional risk factors.
  • Researchers collected data from 1211 participants and tracked cardiovascular events over 10 years, finding a significant association between higher CAC-scores and increased risk of CVD events.
  • While the CAC-score improved risk prediction significantly, the selected biomarkers (like cholesterol and inflammatory markers) did not enhance the predictive capacity for cardiovascular events.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between tacrolimus concentrations in whole blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in kidney transplant patients, ultimately to improve therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Researchers collected pharmacokinetic data from 63 patients, analyzing drug concentrations using advanced techniques and considering patient genetic factors.
  • Results indicated that while a model could describe whole blood concentrations effectively, predicting PBMC concentrations from whole blood was challenging due to unexplained variability, suggesting direct measurement of PBMC concentrations may be necessary for future research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the variability of pain profiles, specifically temporal summation of pain (TSP) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM), among patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain and compares them to pain-free individuals.
  • It identifies distinct pain profiles based on TSP and CPM levels and finds high TSP and low CPM most prevalent in fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis patients.
  • Despite the differences in pain profiles, there were no significant correlations found between these profiles and the intensity of clinical pain experienced by patients.

Background And Purpose: Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) enables generation of conformal dose plans with organ at risk (OAR) sparing potential. However, pelvic IMPT robustness is challenged by inter-fraction motion caused by constant anatomical variations. In this study, the dosimetric impact of inter-fraction motion on target coverage and dose to OAR was quantified in the prospective phase II study ReRad-II on dose-escalated proton reirradiation for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC).
