Article Synopsis
  • In patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) who have normal MRI results, there is debate about whether to perform anterior temporal lobectomy while sparing the hippocampus due to potential memory loss risks.
  • A study examined 17 patients with normal MRIs and EEG data that indicated unilateral seizure activity, categorizing them into two groups based on the timing of hippocampal involvement during seizures.
  • The results showed no significant difference in post-operative seizure and neuropsychological outcomes regardless of whether the hippocampus was removed during surgery, suggesting that SEEG should be part of the surgical planning for these patients.

Purpose: To compare compliance with the French national guidelines before and after the implementation (in 2018) of a new protocol on acute fracture pain management in the pediatric emergency department of a French university medical center.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, before-after study in patients aged below 16 years presenting at the pediatric emergency department with a fracture. We compared pain management before (in 2017) and after (in 2019 and 2020) implementation of the new procedure.

Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir is a promising option for preventing severe COVID-19 in solid organ transplant recipients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, concerns have arisen regarding potential drug interactions with calcineurin inhibitors (CNI). This two-phase multicentre retrospective study, involving 113 patients on tacrolimus and 13 on cyclosporine A, aimed to assess the feasibility and outcomes of recommendations issued by The French societies of transplantation (SFT) and pharmacology (SFPT) for CNI management in this context.

Identifying genetic risk factors for highly heterogeneous disorders like epilepsy remains challenging. Here, we present the largest whole-exome sequencing study of epilepsy to date, with >54,000 human exomes, comprising 20,979 deeply phenotyped patients from multiple genetic ancestry groups with diverse epilepsy subtypes and 33,444 controls, to investigate rare variants that confer disease risk. These analyses implicate seven individual genes, three gene sets, and four copy number variants at exome-wide significance.

Epilepsy presurgical investigation may include focal intracortical single-pulse electrical stimulations with depth electrodes, which induce cortico-cortical evoked potentials at distant sites because of white matter connectivity. Cortico-cortical evoked potentials provide a unique window on functional brain networks because they contain sufficient information to infer dynamical properties of large-scale brain connectivity, such as preferred directionality and propagation latencies.  Here, we developed a biologically informed modelling approach to estimate the neural physiological parameters of brain functional networks from the cortico-cortical evoked potentials recorded in a large multicentric database.

Accuracy of Additively Manufactured and Milled Interim 3-Unit Fixed Dental Prostheses.

J Prosthodont

March 2022

Division of Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials, University Clinics for Dental Medicine, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.

Purpose: To investigate the accuracy of additive manufacturing (AM) by means of internal fit of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated with two AM technologies using different resins and printing modes (validated vs nonvalidated) compared to milling and direct manual methods.

Material And Methods: Sixty 3-unit interim FDPs replacing the first mandibular molar were divided into 6 groups (n = 10): manual (Protemp 4), milled (Telio-CAD), and AM groups were subdivided based on AM technology (direct light processing (Rapidshape P30 [RS]) and stereolithography (FormLabs 2 [FL])) and the polymer type (P-Pro-C&B [St] and SHERAprint-cb [Sh]) (RS-St, RS-Sh, FL-St, FL-Sh). Validated (RS-Sh and RS-St) or nonvalidated (FL-St and FL-Sh) modes were adopted for AM.

  • The Ross-Konno operation is a surgical procedure that helps enlarge a small aortic annulus and left ventricular outflow tract, but it comes with risks of heart complications.
  • The operation is invasive and can lead to issues both shortly after and in the long term.
  • A new technique is suggested that enlarges the aortic annulus and outflow tract without making a cut in the septum, potentially reducing risks.

Objective: We aimed to test whether patients who died of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) had an abnormal cardiac autonomic response to sympathetic stimulation by hyperventilation.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, case-control study of a group of patients who died of SUDEP and controls who were matched to the patients for epilepsy type, drug resistance, sex, age at EEG recording, age at onset of epilepsy, and duration of epilepsy. We analyzed the heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) at rest and during and after hyperventilation performed during the patient's last EEG recording before SUDEP.

Objective: Although a number of clinical factors have been linked to falls in Parkinson's disease (PD), the diagnostic value of gait parameters remains subject to debate. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine to what extent the combination of gait parameters with clinical characteristics can distinguish between fallers and non-fallers.

Methods: Using a video motion system, we recorded gait in 174 patients with PD.

The study's primary objective is to demonstrate that the incidence of postoperative complications is lower in an interventional group (patients monitored using a hemodynamic algorithm that incorporates the RER) than in a control group (treated according to standard practice).

Methods: We shall perform a prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label, superiority trial of consecutive patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery (i.

The neural correlates of the visual consciousness in schizophrenia: an fMRI study.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

June 2021

University of Lille, Inserm U1172, Centre Lille Neuroscience and Cognition, CHU Lille, 59000, Lille, France.

In the current literature, two distinct and opposite models are suggested to explain the consciousness disorders in schizophrenia. The first one suggests that consciousness disorders rely on a low-level processing deficit, when the second model suggests that consciousness disorders rely on disruption in the ability to consciously access information, with preserved unconscious processing. The current study aims to understand the mechanisms associated with visual consciousness disorder in order to pave the road that will settle the debate regarding these hypotheses.
