Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how brain iron is distributed in different subtypes of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) using an imaging method called quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM).
  • Researchers compared MRI data from 68 EOAD patients and 43 healthy controls, assessing brain volume ratios to classify EOAD subtypes and examine iron levels in specific brain regions.
  • Results showed higher iron levels in EOAD patients, especially in deep gray nuclei and limbic structures, and highlighted that different EOAD subtypes displayed unique iron distribution patterns, which may help in identifying patients with atypical Alzheimer's presentations.

Transition to Comfort Care Only and End-of-Life Trajectories in an Acute Geriatric Unit: A Secondary Analysis of the DAMAGE Cohort.

J Am Med Dir Assoc

September 2022

University Lille, CHU Lille, ULR 2694-METRICS: Évaluation des Technologies de Santé et des Pratiques Médicales, Lille, France; Department of Geriatrics, CHU Lille, Lille, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Comfort care improves the quality of life for dying patients, and the study focused on how often patients in acute geriatric units (AGUs) transition to this type of care and its relation to different end-of-life trajectories.
  • In a sample of 177 patients, 69.5% transitioned to comfort care, with frailty being the most common condition affecting end-of-life decisions, especially in patients with dementia.
  • The findings suggest that while transitioning to comfort care is common in AGUs and related to various end-of-life trajectories, frailty without dementia does not significantly increase the likelihood of this transition, indicating a need for improved practices among healthcare providers.

Defining Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions for Hypoglycaemic Agents to Improve Computerised Decision Support: A Study Protocol.

Healthcare (Basel)

November 2021

Univ. Lille, CHU Lille, ULR 2694-METRICS: Évaluation des Technologies de Santé et des Pratiques Médicales, F-59000 Lille, France.

In France, around 5% of the general population are taking drug treatments for diabetes mellitus (mainly type 2 diabetes mellitus, T2DM). Although the management of T2DM has become more complex, most of these patients are managed by their general practitioner and not a diabetologist for their antidiabetics treatments; this increases the risk of potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) of hypoglycaemic agents (HAs). Inappropriate prescribing can be assessed by approaches that are implicit (expert judgement based) or explicit (criterion based).
