This study examined the relationships between perceived public stigma, experienced stigma, and quality of life in people living with HIV (PLHIV), and whether self-stigma mediates these relationships. Cross-sectional data were analyzed from 1704 PLHIV in care at OLVG hospital in the Netherlands. We measured different types of stigma (perceived public stigma, experienced stigma, and self-stigma), and various quality-of-life outcomes (disclosure concerns, depression, anxiety, sexual problems, sleeping difficulties, self-esteem, general health, and social support).

Criegee intermediates in the atmosphere serve as oxidizing agents to initiate aerosol formation, which are particularly important for atmospheric modeling, and understanding their kinetics is one of the current outstanding challenges in climate change modeling. Because experimental kinetics are still limited, we must rely on theory for the complete picture, but obtaining absolute rates from theory is a formidable task. Here, we report the bimolecular reaction kinetics of carbonyl oxide with ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, formaldehyde, and water dimer by designing a triple-level strategy that combines (i) benchmark results close to the complete-basis limit of coupled-cluster theory with the single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations (CCSDTQ/CBS), (ii) a new hybrid meta density functional (M06CR) specifically optimized for reactions of Criegee intermediates, and (iii) variational transition-state theory with both variable rection coordinates and optimized reaction paths, with multidimensional tunneling, and with pressure effects.

Background: Multicellular organisms are characterized by a wide diversity of forms and complexity despite a restricted set of key molecules and mechanisms at the base of organismal development. Development combines three basic processes-asymmetric cell division, signaling, and gene regulation-in a multitude of ways to create this overwhelming diversity of multicellular life forms. Here, we use a generative model to test the limits to which such processes can be combined to generate multiple differentiation paths during development, and attempt to chart the diversity of multicellular organisms generated.

Untangling the interdependency of infections, immunity and frailty may help to clarify their roles in the maintenance of health in aging individuals, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted such priority. In this scoping review we aimed to systematically collect the evidence on 1) the impact of common infections such as influenza, pneumonia and varicella zoster on frailty development, and 2) the role played by frailty in the response to immunization of older adults. Findings are discussed under a unifying framework to identify knowledge gaps and outline their clinical and public health implications to foster a healthier aging.

A shortage of individuals in academic geropsychology positions further perpetuates the shortage of clinicians trained to meet the needs of the aging population. Barriers to recruiting geropsychology trainees into academia and what attracts trainees into career paths within geropsychology are not understood. We present a computer simulation study of helix folding in alanine homopeptides (ALA)n of length n = 5, 8, 15, and 21 residues. Based on multi-microsecond molecular dynamics simulations at room temperature, we found helix populations and relaxation times increasing from about 6% and ~2 ns for ALA5 to about 60% and ~500 ns for ALA21, and folding free energies decreasing linearly with the increasing number of residues. The helix folding was analyzed with the Optimal Dimensionality Reduction method, yielding coarse-grained kinetic models that provided a detailed representation of the folding process.

Relative brain size has long been considered a reflection of cognitive capacities and has played a fundamental role in developing core theories in the life sciences. Yet, the notion that relative brain size validly represents selection on brain size relies on the untested assumptions that brain-body allometry is restrained to a stable scaling relationship across species and that any deviation from this slope is due to selection on brain size. Using the largest fossil and extant dataset yet assembled, we find that shifts in allometric slope underpin major transitions in mammalian evolution and are often primarily characterized by marked changes in body size.

There is an urgent need to assess European citizens' perspective regarding their plastic consumption and to evaluate their awareness of the direct and indirect effect of plastics on human health in order to influence current behavior trends. In this study, the evaluation has been cross-related with scientific facts, with the final aim of detecting the most recommendable paths in increasing human awareness, reducing plastic consumption, and consequently impacting human health. A statistical analysis of quantitative data, gathered from 1000 European citizens via an online survey in the period from May to June 2020, showed that a general awareness about the direct impact of plastic consumption and contamination (waste) on human health is high in Europe.

Geographic variation in bird song has received much attention in evolutionary studies, yet few consider components within songs that may be subject to different constraints and follow different evolutionary trajectories. Here, we quantify patterns of geographic variation in the socially transmitted "whistle" song of Albert's lyrebirds (), an oscine passerine renowned for its remarkable vocal abilities. Albert's lyrebirds are confined to narrow stretches of suitable habitat in Australia, allowing us to map likely paths of cultural transmission using a species distribution model and least cost paths.
