Introduction: To percutaneously fixate a midwaist scaphoid fracture, both volar and dorsal approaches are considered valid options although they may have different screw insertion angles relative to the scaphoid fracture plane influencing fixation stability. In this virtual simulation study, we investigated the accessibility of placing a screw perpendicularly to the fracture plane in transverse and horizontal oblique scaphoid midwaist fracture models and compared standard volar and dorsal approaches.

Material And Methods: Computed tomography scans of 38 healthy wrists were used to obtain virtual 3-dimensional wrist models in flexion and extension.

Estimating Scaphoid Lengths Using Anatomical Measurements in the Wrist.

To be able to define overexpansion and investigate which levels of overexpansion yield optimal clinical results, a precise method for estimating the original scaphoid length is required. Comparison of Preoperative Diets Before Bariatric Surgery: a Randomized, Single-Blinded, Non-inferiority Trial.

Background: Anti-tumour necrosis factor [anti-TNF] treatment was demonstrated to have disease-modifying abilities in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of anti-TNF treatment timing on IBD disease complications and mucosal healing [MH].

Methods: The following IBD-related complications were tested in relation to timing of anti-TNF therapy start in newly diagnosed IBD patients [n = 413]: fistula formation, abscess formation, extra-intestinal manifestations [EIM], surgery, referral to academic centre, and MH.

Towards a close computed tomography monitoring approach for screen detected subsolid pulmonary nodules?

Pulmonary subsolid nodules (SSNs) have a high likelihood of malignancy, but are often indolent. A conservative treatment approach may therefore be suitable. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether close follow-up of SSNs with computed tomography may be a safe approach.

Comparison of two percutaneous volar approaches for screw fixation of scaphoid waist fractures: radiographic and biomechanical study of an osteotomy-simulated model.

The use of the transverse acetabular ligament for determining the orientation of the components in total hip replacement: a randomised controlled trial.

The orientation of the acetabular component can influence both the short- and long-term outcomes of total hip replacement (THR). We performed a prospective, randomised, controlled trial of two groups, comprising of 40 patients each, in order to compare freehand introduction of the component with introduction using the transverse acetabular ligament (TAL) as a reference for anteversion. Anteversion and inclination were measured on pelvic radiographs.

Is there a relation between number of adjustments and results after gastric banding?

Background: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a standard restrictive bariatric procedure. Previous studies have shown that patients lost to follow-up do worse than patients who remain in follow-up. However, it is unknown if this is purely because of a lack of band adjustments.

Prevalence and risk factors of urinary incontinence and bladder retention in gastric bypass surgery: a cross-sectional study.

Morbid obesity is a known risk factor for developing symptoms of urinary incontinence. However, it is not known if this leads to a high prevalence of perioperative incontinence and bladder retention after bariatric surgery because routine use of bladder catheterization is usual during this kind of surgery. The study was conducted at a general hospital in the Netherlands.

Thermal capsulorrhaphy in internal shoulder impingement: a 7-year follow-up study.

Unlabelled: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term results of arthroscopic thermal shrinkage of the anterior capsule in athletes with internal shoulder impingement. In recent years, opinion with regards to the aetiology of internal shoulder impingement has changed significantly. The traditional treatment of internal impingement consisted of debridement of labral and/or undersurface cuff lesions.

Stray light in radial keratotomy and the influence of pupil size and straylight angle.

Glare is a major sequela of the radial keratotomy procedure. We used the straylight meter to measure intraocular light scatter, which is the cause of glare, in eyes after radial keratotomy. This apparatus uses a direct compensation method to assess the amount of intraocular light scatter.

Ocular lubricants and intraocular stray light.

The question was raised whether ocular lubricants or artificial tears might have adverse effects on optical clarity of the eye. Eight current commercial products were tested on five young subjects, using the Straylight Meter. No adverse effects were found.

Severe thrombocytopenia in a pregnant patient with platelet-associated IgM, and known von Willebrand's disease; a case report.

In this report, a patient with known von Willebrand's disease is presented with severe thrombocytopenia developing during pregnancy, which at first was believed to be caused by immune thrombocytopenic purpura. For several reasons this first diagnosis had to be rejected, but subtyping of von Willebrand's disease pointed out that the patient suffered from type IIB, which, according to recent literature, can lead to platelet destruction in pregnancy. Early subtyping of von Willebrand's disease can have a major influence on the management of pregnancy.

Domiciliary fetal monitoring via telephone. A preliminary report.

A cardiotocograph with autocorrelation system, a simple telephone amplifier, a telephone handset with adjustable speaker volume and an adapted portable ultrasonic fetal heart detector can form a simple but effective system for long distance telemetry of the fetal heart rate from patients' homes using public telephone network. Especially the combination of supervision and direct communication with the patient during registration reduces the loss of signal to a minimum (4%), resulting in a high percentage of correctly transmitted fetal cardiograms.
