A systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the combined effects of biopolymer-based active packaging and ionizing radiation on muscle foods' quality. Radiation processing of muscle foods reduced the initial counts and growth rates of microbial flora. Irradiation did not affect the initial level of total volatile nitrogen while decreasing its increasing rate during storage.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the major leading global causes of death. Genetic and epidemiological studies strongly support the causal association between triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins (TAGRL) and atherogenesis, even in statin-treated patients. Recent genetic evidence has clarified that variants in several key genes implicated in TAGRL metabolism are strongly linked to the increased ASCVD risk.

Nattokinase, a serine protease, was discovered in Bacillus subtilis during the fermentation of a soybean byproduct. Nattokinase is essential for the lysis of blood clots and the treatment of cardiac diseases including atherosclerosis, thrombosis, high blood pressure, and stroke. The demand for thrombolytic drugs rises as the prevalence of cardiovascular disease rises, and nattokinase is particularly effective for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to its long duration of action.

Cancer cells feature a resting membrane potential (V) that is depolarized compared to normal cells, and express active ionic conductances, which factor directly in their pathophysiological behavior. Despite similarities to 'excitable' tissues, relatively little is known about cancer cell V dynamics. Here high-throughput, cellular-resolution V imaging reveals that V fluctuates dynamically in several breast cancer cell lines compared to non-cancerous MCF-10A cells.

Indonesia has high biodiversity of algae that are under-utilised due to limitations in the processing techniques. Here, we observed the effect of two different extraction methods (cold maceration and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE)) on multiple variables of Indonesian brown algae ethanol extracts (, , and ). The variables observed included metabolites screening by untargeted metabolomics liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), observation of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), anti-oxidant and B16-F10 melanoma cells cytotoxicity.

Since December 2019, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been spreading worldwide, triggering one of the most challenging pandemics in the human population. In light of the reporting of this virus in domestic and wild animals from several parts of the world, a systematic surveillance study was conceptualized to detect SARS-CoV-2 among species of veterinary importance. Nasal and/or rectal samples of 413 animals (dogs n= 195, cattle n = 64, horses n = 42, goats n = 41, buffaloes n = 39, sheep n = 19, cats n = 6, camels n = 6, and a monkey n = 1) were collected from different places in the Gujarat state of India.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the diversity of eleven Artemisia species from northern Pakistan based on their elemental content using thermal conductivity detection and ICP-AES methods.
  • The results showed the presence of 13 major elements with varying concentrations, indicating differences in nutritional profiles among species, which were categorized into two groups based on these elemental contents.
  • Analysis suggested that while there is significant diversity among the species, the high levels of certain elements also signal the need for caution when using Artemisia for medicinal purposes to prevent potential metal toxicity.

The bacterial co-infections in SARS-CoV-2 patients remained the least explored subject of clinical manifestations that may also determine the disease severity. Nasopharyngeal microbial community structure within SARS-CoV-2 infected patients could reveal interesting microbiome dynamics that may influence the disease outcomes. Here, in this research study, we analyzed distinct nasopharyngeal microbiome profile in the deceased (n = 48) and recovered (n = 29) COVID-19 patients and compared it with control SARS-CoV-2 negative individuals (control) (n = 33).

The growing population increases the need to develop advanced biological methods for utilizing renewable and sustainable resources to produce environmentally friendly biofuels. Currently, energy resources are limited for global demand and are constantly depleting and creating environmental problems. Some higher chain alcohols, like butanol and ethanol, processing similar properties to gasoline, can be alternate sources of biofuel.

Background: Spear®-T sold as a contact foliar spray for the control of glasshouse pests such as aphids, thrips, spider mites and whiteflies, contains the recombinant spider venom peptide GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1h (named as GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1a by Vestaron) as the active ingredient. Here we investigate whether fusion of the peptide to snowdrop lectin, (Galanthus nivalis agglutinin; GNA) enhances the efficacy of this venom peptide towards aphid pests.

Results: Recombinant GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1h (HxTx-Hv1h) and an HxTx-Hv1h/GNA fusion protein were produced using the yeast Pichia pastoris.

Prediabetes consists of the intermediary stage between normal glucose regulation and overt diabetes mellitus and develops when blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to confirm a type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis (T2DM). Recent evidence suggests that probiotics could be promising approaches to improve this state. In this study, we performed a systematic review to compile the results of clinical trials investigating the effects of pro-/pre-/synbiotics on prediabetes subjects from 2010 to 2020.

Objectives: The use of antibiotics in human medicine and livestock production has contributed to the widespread occurrence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Recognizing the relevance of AMR to human and livestock health, it is important to assess the occurrence of genetic determinants of resistance in medical, veterinary, and public health settings in order to understand risks of transmission and treatment failure. Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies have had a significant impact on research in microbial genetics and microbiome analyses.
