The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize bovine-vaginal probiotics genotypically and phenotypically using and evaluate their performance in buffaloes with endometritis. For the isolation and characterization, vaginal swabs were collected from 34 cows and 17 buffaloes, and 709 primary bacterial isolates with probiotic activity were obtained using MRS agar media. Two isolates KUGBRC (LPKUGBRC) and GBRCKU (PPGBRCKU) demonstrated optimum probiotic activities as compared to GG including, acid production, secretion of fatty acids and exopolysaccharide, cell surface hydrophobicity, self-aggregating and co-aggregating capacity with pathogens, anti-microbial activity and bacteriocin-like compounds against pathogens and in cell-free supernatant and absence of hemolytic activity.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new type of film made of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was developed, containing cinnamon essential oil and silver nanoparticles to help preserve fresh strawberries.
  • - The antimicrobial effectiveness of the films was tested against common bacteria and fungi, with the best results showing over 75% inhibition of microbial growth, particularly in the film containing the active formulation.
  • - Storage trials indicated that the most effective film (with the active formulation) significantly reduced spoilage and weight loss in strawberries, especially when combined with gamma radiation, resulting in up to a 94% decrease in decay after 12 days.

Article Synopsis
  • - Poultry farming in South and Southeast Asia is rapidly intensifying to meet the demand for protein, leading to increased use of antimicrobial drugs, which raises concerns about antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) spreading.
  • - A study showed that ARGs can transmit from chicken litter to soil and Sorghum bicolor plants, with specific genes and microorganisms identified as common in this transmission.
  • - The findings underscore the environmental risks of using poultry litter as fertilizer and highlight the need for strategies to prevent the spread of ARGs, which poses threats to human and environmental health.
