Non-technical skills for neurosurgeons: An international survey.

Brain Spine

August 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Fondazione I.R.C.C.S. Istituto Neurologico "C. Besta", Milano, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurosurgery requires not only technical skills but also non-technical skills (NTSs) to achieve mastery, highlighting the importance of both in surgical practice.
  • An international survey of 372 neurosurgeons indicates that qualities like attention to detail, humility, and self-awareness are vital for surgical precision and effective teamwork.
  • The study advocates for integrated training that includes simulations and mentorship to enhance NTSs, while also stressing the need for research aimed at improving educational methods, especially in regions with unequal access to neurosurgical care.

Osteosarcomas predominantly manifest in the long bones of the extremities, with rare occurrences in the skull. A case involving of a 53-year-old female who presented to the authors' hospital for examination due to dizziness was incidentally found to have an occipital bone mass, which was initially diagnosed as a benign tumor and did not receive sufficient attention. Two years later, owing to tumor enlargement, the patient underwent further evaluation at the same institution, which revealed evidence of occipital bone destruction.

Function of miR-21-5p derived from ADSCs-exos on the neuroinflammation after cerebral ischemia.

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

August 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Liaocheng Brain Hospital, No. 45 Huashan Road, Dongchangfu District, Liaocheng, Shandong 252000, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral ischemia (CI) triggers a strong neuroinflammatory response, and the study investigates how exosomes from adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC-exosomes) containing microRNA-21-5p contribute to this process.
  • The study identifies that miR-21-5p is down-regulated during CI and helps reduce neuroinflammation and damage by activating the PIK3R1/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
  • Findings suggest that miR-21-5p from ADSC-exosomes enhances recovery after CI by promoting the polarization of M2 microglia, which are associated with anti-inflammatory responses.

Objective: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has become an alternative strategy to carotid endarterectomy for carotid artery stenosis. Residual stenosis was an independent risk factor for restenosis, with the latter affecting the long-term outcomes of CAS. This multicenter study aimed to evaluate the echogenicity of plaques and hemodynamic alteration by color duplex ultrasound (CDU) examination and investigate their effects on the residual stenosis after CAS.

This article reports a case of spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) after brain surgery in a patient with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), reviews the relevant literature, and discusses the etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical features of SSDH in patients with ITP. A male patient in his early 50 s with an 8-year history of ITP and suffering from coexistent hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia underwent microvascular decompression in our department. His preoperative corrected platelet count was within the normal range.

Clinical efficacy of minimally invasive puncture and drainage versus trepanation and drainage for chronic subdural hematoma: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Medicine (Baltimore)

March 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Liaocheng People's Hospital and Liaocheng Brain Hospital, Liaocheng Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University, Liaocheng City, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of minimally invasive puncture and drainage (MIPD) versus trepanation and drainage in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH).

Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang database were searched for studies on the treatment of CSDH by MIPD and trepanation and drainage. By reading the title, abstract and full text, and screening according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the qualified articles were confirmed.

Introduction: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) using stent retrievers or a direct aspiration first-pass technique has proven to yield better results over intravenous thrombolysis in treating acute ischaemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion (LVO). However, the treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis-related LVO remains unclear and has been a critical problem in daily clinical practice, as it can cause a relatively high failure rate for MT. Whether direct angioplasty and/or stenting is clinically feasible and shows advantage in reducing delay to revascularisation with better functional outcome compared with MT with rescue angioplasty and/or stenting remains unclear.

Purpose: Only approximately half of anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) patients receiving endovascular treatment (EVT) have a favorable outcome. The aim of this study was to explore the association of dynamic inflammatory markers (i.e.

Background And Purpose: In the landmark trials studying endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), pre-stroke dependent (PSD) patients were generally excluded. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of EVT between PSD and pre-stroke independent (PSI) patients.

Methods: We searched CENTRAL, Embase, and Ovid MEDLINE up to 11 November 2021 for studies assessing PSD and PSI patients, which were separately defined as pre-stroke mRS score >2 or >1, and ≤2 or ≤1 accordingly.

Clinical Significance and Influencing Factors of Microvascular Tissue Reperfusion After Macrovascular Recanalization.

Transl Stroke Res

August 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 45 Changchun Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100053, China.

The relevance of impaired microvascular tissue reperfusion despite successful macrovascular angiographic reperfusion (no-reflow) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains controversial. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of tissue optimal reperfusion (TOR) and its influencing factors. From December 1, 2020 to December 1, 2021, AIS patients with successful recanalization (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score [mTICI] ≥ 2b) after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: There is uncertainty regarding the predictors of early neurological deterioration (END) after endovascular thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Limited studies have focused on the effect of END on functional outcome. Our aim was to determine the predictors of END after endovascular thrombectomy in AIS and its effect on functional outcome at 90 days.

February 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; Department of Interventional Neuroradiology, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; China International Neuroscience Institute (China-INI), Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Background And Purpose: Radiotherapy is a standard treatment for head and neck tumors that significantly increases patients' long-term survival rates. However, late cerebrovascular complications, especially carotid artery stenosis (CAS), have gained increasing attention. Investigation of biomarkers of radiation-induced CAS may help to elucidate the mechanism by which radiation induces damage to blood vessels and identify possible preventive measures against such damage.
