Over the centuries, influenza and its associated epidemics have been a serious public health problem. Although vaccination and medications (such as neuraminidase inhibitors) are the mainstay of pharmacological approaches to prevent and treat influenza, however, frequent mutations in the influenza genome often result in treatment failure and resistance to standard medications which limit their effectiveness. In recent years, green tea catechins have been evaluated as potential anti-influenza agents.

Analysis of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in the blood has shown promise for monitoring a variety of biological processes. Plasma cfDNA is a mixture comprising DNA molecules released from various bodily tissues, mediated by characteristic DNA fragmentations occurring during cell death. Fragmentation of cfDNA is non-random and contains tissue-of-origin information, which has been demonstrated in circulating fetal, tumoral, and transplanted organ-derived cfDNA molecules.

Background: Neovascularization is critical for bone regeneration. Numerous studies have explored prevascularization preimplant strategies, ranging from calcium phosphate cement (CPC) scaffolds to co-culturing CPCs with stem cells. The aim of the present study was to evaluate an alternative prevascularization approach, using preimplant-prepared macroporous beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds and subsequent transplantation in bone defect model.

In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between nucleases and eccDNA characteristics in plasma. By using knockout mouse models with deficiencies in deoxyribonuclease 1 (DNASE1) or deoxyribonuclease 1 like 3 (DNASE1L3), we found that cell-free eccDNA in Dnase1l3-/- mice exhibited larger size distributions than that in wild-type mice.

Aims: To provide global, regional, and country-level estimates of diabetes prevalence and health expenditures for 2021 and projections for 2045.
Methods: A total of 219 data sources meeting pre-established quality criteria reporting research conducted between 2005 and 2020 and representing 215 countries and territories were identified. For countries without data meeting quality criteria, estimates were extrapolated from countries with similar economies, ethnicity, geography and language.

Cell-free fetal DNA analysis has an established role in prenatal assessments. It serves as a source of fetal genetic material that is accessible non-invasively from maternal blood. Through the years, evidence has accumulated to show that cell-free fetal DNA molecules are derived from placental tissues, are mainly of short DNA fragments and have rapid post-delivery clearance profiles.

Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), either by medical or surgical castration, is the backbone for standard treatment of locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer, yet it is also associated with various metabolic and cardiovascular complications. Recent evidence have shown that obesity, insulin resistance, or metabolic disturbances can be associated with changes in the gut microbiome, while animal studies also show that castration is associated with changes in the gut microbiome. This study aims to investigate whether the fecal microbiota in prostate cancer patients who had undergone prostatectomy or ADT are different, and explore changes in phylogeny and pathways that may lead to side effects from ADT.

Resveratrol is well known to exhibit vascular relaxant and antihypertensive effects. In this study, we determined the effects of resveratrol on the modulation of cytosolic [Ca] level and adenosine 5'-triphosphate-induced Ca release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) and explored its underlying mechanisms. In this article, cytosolic [Ca] and SR [Ca] in ASMCs were determined by Fluo-4/acetoxymethyl and Mag-Fluo-4/acetoxymethyl respectively.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to serve as silencers to repress gene expression at post-transcriptional levels. Multiple miRNAs have been demonstrated to play important roles in osteogenesis. MicroRNA (miR)-378, a conserved miRNA, was reported to mediate bone metabolism and influence bone development, but the detailed function and underlying mechanism remain obscure.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the regulatory role of G-protein coupled receptor 120 (GPR120) in the development and progression of osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods: GPR120 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice were used to create an animal model of OA by means of anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) surgery. The severity of OA was staged and evaluated by histological examination, microcomputed tomography scan and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Sequence analysis of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragments that circulate in the blood of pregnant women, along with the translation of this method into screening for fetal chromosome abnormalities, is a success story of modern genomic medicine. In less than a decade, prenatal cfDNA testing has gone from small, proof-of-principle studies to a global transformation of prenatal care. As of late 2017, a total of 4 million to 6 million pregnant women had had DNA from their plasma analyzed to screen for fetal aneuploidy.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which serve as important and powerful regulators of various biological activities, have gained widespread attention in recent years. Emerging evidence has shown that some lncRNAs play important regulatory roles in osteoblast differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for bone fracture. As a recently identified lncRNA, linc-ROR was reported to mediate the reprogramming ability of differentiated cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) self-renewal.

The commonly prescribed Tangshen Formula (TSF) is a traditional Chinese formulation that has been shown to reduce plasma lipid metabolism and proteinuria and improve the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients with diabetic kidney disease. This study investigated the underlying mechanism whereby TSF regulates renal lipid accumulation and ameliorates diabetic renal injuries in spontaneous diabetic db/db mice and in sodium palmitate (PA)-stimulated and Abca1-SiRNA-transfected mouse tubular epithelial cells (mTECs). The results revealed that TSF treatment significantly ameliorated the renal injuries by lowering urinary albumin excretion and improving renal tissue injuries in diabetic (db/db) mice.

Advances in research techniques have made it possible to map the microbial communities in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where the majority of bacteria in the human body reside. Disturbances in these communities are referred to as dysbiosis and have been associated with GI cancers. Although dysbiosis is observed in several GI malignancies, the specific role of these changes has not been understood to the extent of Helicobacter pylori (HP) in gastric cancer (GC).

As a regulator of osteogenesis, microRNA-218 (miR-218) is reported to promote osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). However, the in vivo osteogenic effect of miR-218 remains elusive. In this study, miR-218 was confirmed to promote osteogenic differentiation of MSCs by stimulating the alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium nodule formation, and osteogenic marker gene expression.

Natural killer (NK) cells belong to the innate immune system and are a first-line anti-cancer immune defense; however, they are suppressed in the tumor microenvironment and the underlying mechanism is still largely unknown. The lack of a consistent and reliable source of NK cells limits the research progress of NK cell immunity. Here, we report an in vitro system that can provide high quality and quantity of bone marrow-derived murine NK cells under a feeder-free condition.

Autophagy is a highly complicated process with participation of large numbers of autophagy-related proteins. Under nutrient starvation, autophagy promotes cell survival by breaking down nonessential cellular components for recycling use. However, due to its high complexity, molecular mechanism of autophagy is still not fully understood.

Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has been widely used for bone regeneration for many years. However, there are few studies on the osteoconduction ability of different shaped β-TCP scaffolds. In this study, we compared the osteoconductive potential between the tubular and cylindrical β-TCP scaffolds in long bone defect animal model.
