Unlabelled: In recent years, the EnodePro device has been one of the most frequently used velocity sensors to track the bar velocity in resistance training, with the aim of providing load-velocity profiles. However, recent articles highlight a lack of reliability and validity in the estimated maximal strength, which can cause a serious health risk due to the overestimation of the bar velocity. With this study, we aimed to investigate whether imprecision in the measurement could explain the variance in this measurement error.

Climate change has heightened the need to understand physical climate risks, such as the increasing frequency and severity of heat waves, for informed financial decision-making. This study investigates the financial implications of extreme heat waves on stock returns in Europe and the United States. Accordingly, the study combines meteorological and stock market data by integrating methodologies from both climate science and finance.

of this study was to investigate the by-products acid whey and oat pomace as nutrient sources for succinic acid production by Actinobacillus succinogenes. Both by-products provide carbon sources in form of glucose and/or lactose without any pre-treatment. Yields of succinic acid per g total sugars consumed after 24 h were between 0.

Introduction: Clinically, knowing whether a static stretching (SS) intervention program conducted for several weeks can reduce passive muscle stiffness is important. Still, only a few previous studies have evaluated the chronic effects of an SS intervention program in older adults, and the potential relationship between ROM changes and muscle stiffness changes is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 10- week SS intervention partially supervised program on joint range of motion (ROM) and tissue hardness in older adults.

Polymeric excipients (PEx) are essential in drug formulation but raise environmental concerns upon wastewater release post-administration due to their potential detrimental effects to life-histories of freshwater vertebrates and invertebrates. Ten pharmaceutical polymeric compounds were assessed in a stepwise environmental biodegradation assessment according to standard OECD 301 guidelines to thoroughly evaluate biodegradability of these compounds. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), chitosan, maize starch, and sodium starch glycolate (SSG) were found to be 'readily biodegradable,' although PVA and PEG showed variation across employed test systems.

Plastic pollution, especially pollution by micro- and nanoplastics, is now considered a potential threat to all ecosystems, including terrestrial ecosystems such as grassland habitats. This study investigated the impacts of micro- and nano-sized plastics on Bromus hordeaceus, a common grass species in European grasslands. The micro and nanoparticles were fossil-based polyethylene (PE) or plant-based polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and these two plastics were used at two different concentrations.

Introduction: While maximum strength diagnostics are applied in several sports and rehabilitative settings, dynamic strength capacity has been determined via the one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing for decades. Because the literature concerned several limitations, such as injury risk and limited practical applicability in large populations (e.g.

Humans display a remarkable tendency to cooperate with strangers; however, identifying prospective cooperation partners accurately before entering any new relationship is essential to mitigate the risk of being exploited. Visual appearance, as inferrable, for example, from facial images on job portals and dating sites, may serve as a potential signal of cooperativeness. This experimental study examines whether static images enable the correct detection of an individual's propensity to cooperate.

Background: Evidence shows that online interventions could prevent depression. However, to improve the effectiveness of preventive online interventions in individuals with subthreshold depression, it is worthwhile to study factors influencing intervention outcomes. Outcome expectancy has been shown to predict treatment outcomes in psychotherapy for depression.

When measuring maximum strength, a high accuracy and precision is required to monitor the training adaptations. Based on available reliability parameters, the literature suggests the replacement of the one repetition maximum (1RM) by isometric testing to save testing time. However, from a statistical point of view, correlation coefficients do not provide the required information when aiming to replace one test by another.

Human-driven land use change can result in unequitable outcomes in the provision and appropriation of ecosystem services (ES). To better address equity-related effects of land use change in decision-making, analyses of land use and ES changes under different land use management alternatives should incorporate ecological and social information and take a disaggregated approach to ES analysis. Because such approaches are still scarce in the literature, we present a generalized social-ecological approach to support equitable land use decision-making (in terms of process and outcomes) and an example of its application to a case study in southwestern Ethiopia.

Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) is presented as an equitable approach, particularly relative to strict types of Area-based conservation. In Zambia, traditional and formal, contemporary institutions were combined to leverage CBNRM for natural resource management. We investigate whether and how this shift in conservation approach and interaction between institutions works in practice, and to what extent it produces more equitable governance processes.

UV filters and benzotriazole UV stabilizers are considered emerging contaminants in the environment. LC-MS/MS and GC-MS methods, involving a single solid phase extraction protocol, were developed and validated to determine eight UV filters and seven UV stabilizers, respectively in wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Lüneburg, Germany. The LC-MS/MS method exhibited extraction recoveries of ≥ 71% at six different fortification levels with limits of detection (LODs) range of 0.

Following eye gaze is fundamental for many social-cognitive abilities, for example, when judging what another agent can or cannot know. While the emergence of gaze following has been thoroughly studied on a group level, we know little about (a) the developmental trajectory beyond infancy and (b) the sources of individual differences. In Study 1, we examined gaze following across the lifespan (N = 478 3- to 19-year-olds from Leipzig, Germany; and N = 240 20- to 80-year-old international, remotely tested adults).

Background: Structural and behavioral interventions to manage work-related stress are effective in employees. Nonetheless, they have been implemented insufficiently, particularly in micro- and small-sized enterprises (MSE). Main barriers include a lack of knowledge and limited resources, which could potentially be overcome with simplified web-based alternatives for occupational stress prevention.

Tracking these changes and estimating the coverage of open versus forested vegetation in past glacial and interglacial landscapes is notoriously difficult because the characteristic dwarf birches of the tundra and the tree birches of the boreal and temperate forests produce similar pollen grains that are difficult to distinguish in the pollen record. One objective approach to separating dwarf birch pollen from tree birch pollen is to use grain size statistics.

Flavonoids, a class of natural products with a variety of applications in nutrition, pharmacy and as biopesticides, could substitute more harmful synthetic chemicals that persist in the environment. To gain a better understanding of the biodegradability of flavonoids and the influence of structural features, firstly, the ultimate biodegradation of 19 flavonoids was investigated with the Closed Bottle Test according to the OECD guideline 301 D. Secondly, regarding the fast abiotic degradation reported for several flavonoids with severe concentration decrease within hours and its possible impacts on the processes behind the ultimate biodegradation, primary degradation of 4 selected flavonoids was compared at conditions representing biodegradation, abiotic degradation, and mixed substrates by monitoring the flavonoids' concentrations with HPLC-UV/vis.

Friction surfacing (FS) is a solid-state coating technology for metallic materials, where the deposition of a consumable material on a substrate is enabled via friction and plastic deformation. The deposited layer material commonly presents a significantly refined microstructure, where corrosion could be an issue due to this grain refinement within the layer deposited, possibly creating micro galvanic pairs. The present work investigates the corrosion behavior of the FS deposited material as well as stud base material and substrate using cyclic polarization tests and open circuit potential (OCP) monitoring.
