The rectal-anal junction (RAJ) is the major colonization site of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 in beef cattle, leading to transmission of this foodborne pathogen from farms to food chains. To date, there is limited understanding regarding whether the mucosa-attached microbiome has a profound impact on host-STEC interactions. In this study, the active RAJ mucosa-attached microbiota and its potential role in host immunity-STEC commensal interactions were investigated using RAJ mucosal biopsies collected from calves orally challenged with two STEC O157 strains with or without functional stx2a (stx2a+ or stx2a-).

In this study, we intensively measured the longitudinal productivity and survival of 362 commercially managed honey bee colonies in Canada, over a two-year period. A full factorial experimental design was used, whereby two treatments were repeated across apiaries situated in three distinct geographic regions: Northern Alberta, Southern Alberta and Prince Edward Island, each having unique bee management strategies. In the protein supplemented treatment, colonies were continuously provided a commercial protein supplement containing 25% w/w pollen, in addition to any feed normally provided by beekeepers in that region.

Biomarkers are used to assess pain and analgesic drug efficacy in livestock. However, often the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of these biomarkers for different painful conditions over time have not been described. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are graphical plots that illustrate the diagnostic ability of a test as its discrimination threshold is varied.

Diversity and compositional analysis are the most common approaches in deciphering microbial community differences. However, these approaches neglect microbial structural differences driven by microbial interactions. In this study, the microbiota data were generated from 12 rectal digesta samples collected from steers in which the Shiga toxin 2 gene () was not expressed (defined as Stx2- group) in the bacteria, and those with expressed (defined as Stx2+ group) and used to explore whether microbial networks affect gut microbiota and foodborne pathogen virulence in cattle.

Current limitations in the understanding and control of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Canada are described through a comprehensive review focusing on: (1) treatment optimization; (2) surveillance of antimicrobial use and AMR; and (3) prevention of transmission of AMR. Without addressing gaps in identified areas, sustained progress in AMR mitigation is unlikely. Expert opinions and perspectives contributed to prioritizing identified gaps.

Shiga toxin (Stx) is the main virulence factor of Shiga toxin-producing (STEC), and ruminants are the main reservoir of STEC. This study assessed the abundance and expression of genes and the expression of host immune genes, aiming to determine factors affecting these measures and potential gene markers to differentiate gene expression in the recto-anal junction of feedlot beef cattle. Rectal tissue and content samples were collected from 143 feedlot steers of three breeds (Angus, Charolais, and Kinsella Composite) over 2 consecutive years 2014 (n=71) and 2015 (n=72).

Cattle have been suggested as the primary reservoirs of O157 mainly as a result of colonization of the recto-anal junction (RAJ) and subsequent shedding into the environment. Although a recent study reported different gene expression at RAJ between super-shedders (SS) and non-shedders (NS), the regulatory mechanisms of altered gene expression is unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether bovine non-coding RNAs play a role in regulating the differentially expressed (DE) genes between SS and NS, thus further influencing O157 shedding behavior in the animals through studying miRNAomes of the whole gastrointestinal tract including duodenum, proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, cecum, spiral colon, descending colon and rectum.

Alfalfa polysaccharide (APS) has been proposed to exhibit growth-promoting and immune-enhancing bodily functions in vivo. However, little is known about its downstream immunomodulatory and intrinsic molecular mechanisms. Herein, mouse splenic lymphocytes were isolated to characterize the immunomodulatory effects and molecular mechanisms of APS in vitro.

Increasing nitrogen fertilization and irrigation can contribute to nitrous oxide (NO) emissions from agriculture. Relative to the conventional practice of one-pass fertilization with all N applied at crop seeding, this study examined how splitting the total N fertilization into seeding time and in-crop fertigation impacts NO emission factors (EF) in irrigated wheat (Triticum aestivum) and canola (Brassica napus) in Southern Alberta, Canada during two growing seasons (May to Oct. in 2015 and 2016).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the source of silage, cereal grain, and their interaction on growth performance, digestibility, and carcass characteristics of finishing beef cattle. Using a completely randomized design within an 89-d finishing study, 288 steers were randomly assigned to 1 of 24 pens (12 steers/pen) with average steer body weight (BW) within a pen of 464 kg ± 1.7 kg (mean ± SD).

Leaf and stripe rust are major threats to wheat production worldwide. The effective, multiple rust resistances present in the Brazilian cultivar Toropi makes it an excellent choice for a genetic study of rust resistance. Testing of DNA from different seed lots of Toropi with 2,194 polymorphic 90K iSelect single nucleotide polymorphism markers identified significant genetic divergence, with as much as 35% dissimilarity between seed lots.

We tested the hypothesis that hypoxia replicates effects of hyperthermia on reducing number and quality of sperm produced, whereas hyperoxia mitigates effects of hyperthermia. Forty-eight CD-1 mice (∼50 d old), inspired air with 13, 21, or 95% O and were exposed to ambient temperatures of 20 or 36 °C (3 × 2 factorial, six groups) twice for 12 h (separated by 12 h at 20 °C and 21% O), with euthanasia 14 or 20 d after first exposure. Combined for both post-exposure intervals, there were primarily main effects of temperature; mice exposed to 20 vs 36 °C had differences in testis weight (110.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) continues to be a serious health problem in beef cattle production. A multifactorial condition, BRD encompasses several types of pneumonia that are associated with multiple viral and bacterial agents. Comprehensive identification of microbes associated with BRD fatalities could enhance our understanding of the range of pathogens that contribute to the disease and identify new therapeutic targets.

Invertebrates make up over 95% of animal biodiversity on Earth and contribute to multiple ecosystem services (ES) in natural and human-dominated systems. One such service, biological control (BC) of herbivorous pests, is a core component of sustainable intensification of agriculture, yet its importance is routinely overlooked. Here we report a macro-scale, cross-cultural assessment of the public visibility (or 'salience') of BC invertebrates, using high-throughput analysis of large bodies of digitized text (i.
