Background: Understanding the trajectories of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) across different age cohorts and sociodemographic factors is crucial for promoting healthy aging. This study aims to examine the course of physical and mental HRQoL over a 16-year period in a nationwide sample of the German population.
Methods: Data from the German Socio-Economic Panel spanning from 2002 to 2018 (N = 4111; female = 52.

Acute myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock (AMI-CS) is a severe, life-threatening condition characterised by inadequate tissue perfusion due to the heart's inability to pump blood effectively. The pathophysiology of AMI-CS usually arises from the sudden loss of myocardial contractility, leading to a decrease in cardiac output and systemic hypoperfusion. In approximately 90% of AMI-CS cases, the left ventricle is the primary site of dysfunction.

Purpose: Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are major risk factors for hepatic steatosis. Diet or bariatric surgery can reduce liver volume, fat content, and inflammation. However, little is known about their effects on liver function, as evaluated here using the LiMAx test.

Introduction: The larynx organ preservation (LOP) trial DeLOS-II enrolled = 173 patients with advanced laryngeal/hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LHSCC) amenable (only curatively resectable) through total laryngectomy (TL) to receive induction chemotherapy (IC) with TPF [docetaxel (T), cisplatin (P), and 5-fluorouracil (F)] (arm A, 85 patients) or additional cetuximab (E) weekly (arm B, 88 patients). Responders with endoscopic estimated tumor surface shrinkage (ETSS) ≥30% after 1 cycle IC (IC-1) received a further two cycles of IC followed by radiotherapy (RT), whereas TL was recommended for non-responders. Arm B failed to show superior 24-month laryngectomy-free survival (LFS) and overall survival (OS), the protocol-specified primary and secondary endpoints.

Background: The timing of coronary angiography in patients with successfully resuscitated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and missing ST-segment elevations on the electrocardiogram has been investigated in 2 large randomized controlled trials, TOMAHAWK (Angiography After Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Without ST-Segment Elevation) and COACT (Coronary Angiography After Cardiac Arrest Trial). Both trials found neutral results for immediate vs delayed/selective coronary angiography on short-term all-cause mortality. The TOMAHAWK trial showed a tendency towards harm with immediate coronary angiography, though not statistically significant with traditional frequentist methods.

Background: Since June 2022, the legal framework has been created for German community pharmacies to offer their patients five reimbursed community pharmacy services that go beyond the current operating regulations. However, little is known about barriers that hinder their implementation. We therefore aimed to investigate the implementation of reimbursed community pharmacy services (i), barriers to the implementation (ii), solving strategies to overcome the barriers (iii), and future perspectives (iv).

Background: Biological, pharmacological, and socio-cultural aspects influence gender-specific effects in pain management.
Methods: Gender-specific aspects of pain management were assessed in a rural outpatient center via semi-structured patient interview: (i) general gender aspects (total population) from 1 = "fully disagree" to 5 = "fully agree"; and (ii) individual pain (matched pairs) via numeric analog scale (NAS) from 0 = "no pain" to 10 = "maximum pain". Patient charts were assessed for pain management (WHO-ladder).

Objectives: Parent-child interaction plays a crucial role in child development. This study investigated associations between the frequency of parent-child-interactions and sociodemographic characteristics (age, sex, socio-economic status, family structure, number and age of siblings), physical and psychological symptoms in children, and mental health of parents.
Methods: The frequencies of 11 different parent-child interactions (shared reading, singing, moving, painting, building, puzzle, playing ball, role games, language games, number games and talking about problems) were assessed in 739 children aged 2-6.

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by a wide range of tumor-induced immune alterations. Regulatory T cells (Treg) play a central role in these immune responses. CD200 and Leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor-1 (LAIR-1, CD305) are inhibitory markers said to be involved in Treg immune response.

This study investigates the prevalence and evaluates the prognostic implications of acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19 patients, with a novel emphasis on the evaluation of serum uromodulin (sUmod) as a potential kidney-specific biomarker. A cohort of hospitalised COVID-19 patients (n = 378) was examined for AKI using standard criteria. In addition to traditional urinary biomarkers, sUmod levels were analysed.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is among most frequent malignancies of the head and neck. Recent oncologic research focusses on advanced rather than on early stages. Thus, we aimed to improve the knowledge concerning prognostic factors and survival in early glottic (GC) and supraglottic cancer (SGC).

Intelectin-1 (ITLN1; also Omentin-1, OMNT1) is secreted by adipose tissue (AT) and plays an important role in glucose metabolism regulation, with links to obesity-associated diseases. ITLN1 activity so far has rarely been investigated using RNA-sequencing and in larger cohorts. We evaluated ITLN1 expression among three clinical cohorts of the Leipzig Obesity BioBank-a cross-sectional cohort comprising of 1480 people, a cohort of people with metabolically healthy or unhealthy obesity (31 insulin-sensitive, 42 insulin-resistant individuals with obesity), and a longitudinal two-step bariatric surgery cohort (n = 65).

The acquisition of subsequent genetic lesions (clonal evolution, CE) and/or the expansion of existing clones (CEXP) contributes to clonal dynamics (CD) in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Although CD plays an important role in high-risk patients in disease progression and transformation into acute myeloid leukemia (AML), knowledge about CD in lower-risk MDS (LR-MDS) patients is limited due to lack of robust longitudinal data considering the long clinically stable courses of the disease. In this retrospective analysis, we delineate the frequency and the prognostic impact of CD in an unselected real-world cohort of LR-MDS patients.

Purpose: As part of the prospective, non-interventional OCEAN study, the ORCA module evaluated physicians' spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) image interpretations in the treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DME) or macular oedema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO).
Methods: Presence of intraretinal fluid (IRF) and/or subretinal fluid (SRF) was evaluated independently by physicians and reading centres (RCs) on 1612 SD-OCT scans of 133 patients diagnosed with either DME or ME secondary to RVO. Agreement between physicians and RCs was calculated for both cohorts individually and as a combined ME cohort.
