In fractal image compression, the code is an efficient binary representation of a contractive mapping whose unique fixed point approximates the original image. The mapping is typically composed of affine transformations, each approximating a block of the image by another block (called domain block) selected from the same image. The search for a suitable domain block is time-consuming.

This paper describes the ElePhant (Electronic Phantom)-an anatomical correct simulation system based on 3D rapid prototyping models for the otologic intervention "Mastoidectomy". The anatomical structures of the head are created with plaster as base material using 3D-printing as rapid prototyping technology (RPT). Structures at risk, represented by electrically conductible material and fiber optics, are realized as an electric circuit and can be detected during the simulation of the surgical procedure.

The neighborhood preservation of self-organizing feature maps like the Kohonen map is an important property which is exploited in many applications. However, if a dimensional conflict arises this property is lost. Various qualitative and quantitative approaches are known for measuring the degree of topology preservation.
