Article Synopsis
  • The CAIRO4 study aimed to determine if upfront primary tumor resection (PTR) combined with systemic therapy improves overall survival in patients with synchronous unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).
  • Conducted in The Netherlands and Denmark, the trial involved 206 patients who were randomly assigned to receive either PTR plus systemic therapy or systemic therapy alone, with the primary endpoint being overall survival.
  • Results showed that median overall survival was slightly higher for the upfront PTR group (20.1 months) compared to the no PTR group (18.3 months), but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.32), indicating no clear benefit from adding PTR to treatment.

Objective: To compare the performance of different spinal radiographic damage scoring methods in patients with early axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA).

Methods: Five-year spinal radiographs from the DESIR cohort were scored by three readers (averaged) for the calculation of the Stoke AS Spine Score (SASSS), modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spine Score (mSASSS), Radiographic AS Spinal Score (RASSS), BASRI-spine and BASRI-total, and following the OMERACT filter, scores were compared according to truth, discrimination (reliability and sensitivity to change) and feasibility. The proportion of patients with a net change > smallest detectable change and >1 was calculated.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers discovered anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients that are linked to more severe disease outcomes and can appear years before the disease manifests.
  • The study focused on determining the specific proteins recognized by anti-CarP antibodies, leading to the identification of carbamylated alpha-1-antitrypsin (Ca-A1AT) as a key target through mass-spectrometry analysis.
  • Findings indicate that the presence of Ca-A1AT in joint fluid may play a role in inflammation for RA patients with anti-CarP antibodies, suggesting its importance in the disease process.

Folate receptor alpha (FRα) is known to be upregulated in a variety of cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and breast cancer. To ensure reliable implementation of diagnostic- and therapeutic agents, concordance of FRα expression between biopsy, primary tumor and metastases is important. Using immunohistochemistry (Mab 26B3.

ANGPTL4 mediates shuttling of lipid fuel to brown adipose tissue during sustained cold exposure.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation via cold exposure is increasingly scrutinized as a potential approach to ameliorate cardio-metabolic risk. Transition to cold temperatures requires changes in the partitioning of energy substrates, re-routing fatty acids to BAT to fuel non-shivering thermogenesis. However, the mechanisms behind the redistribution of energy substrates to BAT remain largely unknown.
