Introduction: Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) due to traumatic brain injury (TBI) constitutes an increasing global health problem, especially in the elderly population. Treatment decisions on surgical versus conservative management pose a neurosurgical dilemma. Large practice variation exists between countries, hospitals, and individual neurosurgeons, illustrating the presence of 'clinical equipoise'.

Objectives: Blood cultures (BCs) are commonly ordered in emergency departments (EDs), while a minority yields a relevant pathogen. Diagnostic stewardship is needed to safely reduce unnecessary BCs. We aimed to develop and validate a bacteremia prediction model for ED patients, with specific focus on the benefit of incorporating procalcitonin.

Introduction: In patients with anterior circulation aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage (aSAH), endovascular coiling is currently practiced more frequently than neurosurgical clipping. However, despite multiple previous studies, it is still uncertain whether coiling is favourable in terms of long-term clinical outcome.
Research Question: What is the effect of clipping versus coiling on long-term functional outcome of patients with an aSAH?
Material And Methods: All anterior circulation aSAH patients (2012-2015) treated with clipping or coiling in two hospitals in the Netherlands were studied up to five years after treatment.

Introduction: Older adults with acute functional decline may visit emergency departments (EDs) for medical support despite a lack of strict medical urgency. The introduction of transitional care teams (TCT) at the ED has shown promise in reducing avoidable admittances. However, the optimal composition and implementation of TCTs are still poorly defined.

Aim/objective: Indicating how community participation transfers to application within the nursing learning and working context.
Background: Preparing nurses to drive advances in health care requires the integration of working and learning. Learning communities are therefore recommended to connect students, educational programs and health care organizations.

Cardioneuroablation has emerged as a potential alternative to cardiac pacing in selected cases with vasovagal reflex syncope, extrinsic vagally induced sinus bradycardia-arrest or atrioventricular block. The technique was first introduced decades ago, and its use has risen over the past decade. However, as with any intervention, proper patient selection and technique are a prerequisite for a safe and effective use of cardioneuroablation therapy.

Background: Posterior cervical foraminotomy (posterior surgery) is a valid alternative to anterior discectomy with fusion (anterior surgery) as a surgical treatment of cervical radiculopathy, but the quality of evidence has been limited. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcome of these treatments after 2 years of follow-up. We hypothesized that posterior surgery would be noninferior to anterior surgery.

Aims: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) has emerged as a mediator between systemic inflammatory disorders and cardiovascular disease, and may therefore play a role in the pathophysiology of cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between EAT and left ventricular (LV) function, and to determine the prognostic value of EAT in patients with SSc.
Methods And Results: Consecutive patients with SSc who underwent non-contrast thorax computed tomography and echocardiography were included.

Measures of physical growth, such as weight and height have long been the predominant outcomes for monitoring child health and evaluating interventional outcomes in public health studies, including those that may impact neurodevelopment. While physical growth generally reflects overall health and nutritional status, it lacks sensitivity and specificity to brain growth and developing cognitive skills and abilities. Introduction: Bifid ribs are a type of, generally asymptomatic, congenital chest wall abnormality. However, patients sometimes complain about chronic chest pains, deformities and respiratory difficulty. There is limited literature regarding treatment of symptomatic bifid ribs.

To determine patients' perspectives on home monitoring at emergency department (ED) presentation and shortly after admission and compare these with their physicians' perspectives. Forty Dutch hospitals participated in this prospective flash mob study. Adult patients with acute medical conditions, treated by internal medicine specialties, presenting at the ED or admitted at the admission ward within the previous 24 h were included.

Introduction: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is often diagnosed late in acute pulmonary embolism survivors: more efficient testing to expedite diagnosis may considerably improve patient outcomes. The InShape II algorithm safely rules out CTEPH (failure rate 0.29%) while requiring echocardiography in only 19% of patients but may be improved by adding detailed reading of the computed tomography pulmonary angiography diagnosing the index pulmonary embolism.

Rationale: Cervical radiculopathy is initially typically managed conservatively. Surgery is indicated when conservative management fails or with severe/progressive neurological signs. Personalised multimodal physiotherapy could be a promising conservative strategy.

Background: Ethiopia made a national licensing examination (NLE) for associate clinician anesthetists a requirement for entry into the practice workforce. However, there is limited empirical evidence on whether the NLE scores of associate clinicians predict the quality of health care they provide in low-income countries. This study aimed to assess the association between anesthetists' NLE scores and three selected quality of patient care indicators.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an advanced treatment in Parkinson's disease. We describe a 71-year-old patient in whom the DBS got infected with Mycobacterium bovis shortly after intravesical BCG instillations as an adjuvant treatment of bladder cancer. The DBS internal pulse generator and extension wires had to be replaced, and the patient was treated successfully with rifampicin, isoniazid, and ethambutol during three months.

Background And Objectives: Guideline recommendations for surgical management of traumatic epidural hematomas (EDHs) do not directly address EDHs that co-occur with other intracranial hematomas; the relative rates of isolated vs nonisolated EDHs and guideline adherence are unknown. We describe characteristics of a contemporary cohort of patients with EDHs and identify factors influencing acute surgery.
Methods: This research was conducted within the longitudinal, observational Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury cohort study which prospectively enrolled patients with traumatic brain injury from 65 hospitals in 18 European countries from 2014 to 2017.

Reports from spontaneous reporting systems (SRS) are hypothesis generating. Additional evidence such as more reports is required to determine whether the generated drug-event associations are in fact safety signals. However, underreporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) delays signal detection.

We hypothesized that fit older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with decitabine (DEC) would report better health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes than those receiving intensive chemotherapy (IC). We conducted a phase 3 randomized trial to compare DEC (10-day schedule) with IC (3+7) in older fit patients with AML. HRQoL was a secondary end point, and it was assessed with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) in conjunction with its elderly module (EORTC QLQ-ELD14).
