Aims: To describe the process and outputs of a workshop convened to identify key priorities for future research in the area of diabetes and physical activity and provide recommendations to researchers and research funders on how best to address them.

Methods: A 1-day research workshop was conducted, bringing together researchers, people living with diabetes, healthcare professionals, and members of staff from Diabetes UK to identify and prioritise recommendations for future research into physical activity and diabetes.

Results: Workshop attendees prioritised four key themes for further research: (i) better understanding of the physiology of exercise in all groups of people: in particular, what patient metabolic characteristics influence or predict the physiological response to physical activity, and the potential role of physical activity in beta cell preservation; (ii) designing physical activity interventions for maximum impact; (iii) promoting sustained physical activity across the life course; (iv) designing physical activity studies for groups with multiple long-term conditions.

Objectives: To suggest how continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) may be used intermittently in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Materials And Methods: The use of CGM is largely in those with type 1 diabetes (T1D), in whom it makes sense to use CGM continuously as CGM provides a valuable tool to not only adjust their insulin doses but also to match it with their diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle modifications. In the case of T2D, however, especially for those not on insulin, the use of CGM may not be needed on a continuous basis.

"'Hypos' can strike twice" (HS2) is a pragmatic, leaflet-based referral intervention designed for administration by clinicians of the emergency medical services (EMS) to people they have attended and successfully treated for hypoglycaemia. Its main purpose is to encourage the recipient to engage with their general practitioner or diabetic nurse in order that improvements in medical management of their diabetes may be made, thereby reducing their risk of recurrent hypoglycaemia. Herein we build a de novo economic model for purposes of incremental analyses to compare, in 2018-19 prices, HS2 against standard care for recurrent hypoglycaemia in the fortnight following the initial attack from the perspective of the UK National Health Service (NHS).

Aims: While cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes commonly progresses with the occurrence of repeated events, most trials consider the effect of glucose-lowering strategies only on the first event. We examined the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes trial and its observational follow-up study (ACCORDION) to investigate the effect of intensive glucose control on multiple events and further identify any subgroup effects.

Materials And Methods: A recurrent events analysis, using a negative binomial regression model, was applied to estimate the treatment effect on different consecutive cardiovascular disease events, including non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, hospitalisation from heart failure, and cardiovascular death.
