Organic electronics became an attractive alternative for practical applications in complementary logic circuits due to the unique features of organic semiconductors such as solution processability and ease of large-area manufacturing. Bulk heterojunctions (BHJ), consisting of a blend of two organic semiconductors of different electronic affinities, allow fabrication of a broad range of devices such as light-emitting transistors, light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, photodetectors, ambipolar transistors and sensors. In this work, the charge carrier transport of BHJ films in field-effect transistors is switched from electron to hole domination upon processing and post-treatment.

Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer and functions as the main structural component in a variety of living organisms. In nature, chitin rarely occurs in a pure form, but rather as nanoorganized chitin-proteins, chitin-pigments, or chitin-mineral composite biomaterials. Although chitin has a long history of scientific studies, it is still extensively investigated for practical applications in medicine, biotechnology, and biomimetics.

In-stent restenosis after stenting is generally characterized by an inflammatory response, excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cells, and delayed healing of the endothelium layer. In this study, inspired by catechol/gallol surface chemistry, a sandwich-like layer-by-layer (LBL) coating was developed using chitosan and heparin as polyelectrolytes, along with the embedding of an epigallocatechin gallate/copper (EGCG/Cu) complex. The embedding of EGCG stabilized the coating by various intermolecular interactions in the LBL coating (e.

The layered salt Bi Rh I is a weak three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI), that is, a stack of two-dimensional (2D) TIs. It has a wide non-trivial band gap of 210 meV, which is generated by strong spin-orbit coupling, and possesses protected electronic edge-states. In the structure, charged layers of (Bi Rh) I] honeycombs and Bi I ] chains alternate.

Natural fibres have a high potential as reinforcement of polymer matrices, as they combine a high specific strength and modulus with sustainable production and reasonable prices. Modifying the fibre surface is a common method to increase the adhesion and thereby enhance the mechanical properties of composites. In this study, a novel sustainable surface treatment is presented: the fungal enzyme laccase was utilised with the aim of covalently binding the coupling agent dopamine to flax fibre surfaces.

This mitotic rounding relies on mechanical deformation of surrounding tissue and is driven by forces emanating from actomyosin contractility. Cancer cells are able to maintain successful mitosis in mechanically challenging environments such as the increasingly crowded environment of a growing tumor, thus, suggesting an enhanced ability of mitotic rounding in cancer.

This work highlights the use of Fe-modified MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to replace dye and semiconductor complexes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), forming a layered double hydroxide solar cell (LDHSC). For this purpose, a MgAl-LDH and a Fe-modified MgAl LDH were prepared. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were used to analyze the structural properties, morphology, and success of the Fe-modification of the synthesized LDHs.

Copper (Cu)(II) ions, mainly an excess amount, play a negative role in the course of several diseases, like cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, and the so-called Wilson disease. On the contrary, Cu(II) ions are also capable of improving anticancer drug efficiency. For this reason, it is of great interest to study the interacting ability of Cu(II)-nanodrug and Cu(II)-nanocarrier complexes with cell membranes for their potential use as nanotherapeutics.

Tecto(dendrimers) are well-defined, dendrimer cluster type covalent structures. In this article, we present the synthesis of such a PAMAM [G5:G3-(TREN)]--(4-carbomethoxy) pyrrolidone terminated tecto(dendrimer). This tecto(dendrimer) exhibits nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL; excitation 376 nm; emission 455 nm) that has been attributed to three fluorescent components characterized by different fluorescence lifetimes.

This work describes a new concept of porous vapor sensor materials based on co-continuous polycarbonate/poly(vinylidene fluoride)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PC/PVDF/MWCNT) blend composites. The blend composites were fabricated by melt mixing in a one-step mixing process, and the MWCNT containing component (here PC) was extracted, leaving a MWCNT network on the continuous surface of the remaining component (here PVDF). First, by selecting three PCs with different molecular weights, the blend viscosity ratio and blend fineness and interfacial area were varied.

Recently, we have shown that a tensile stress applied to chains of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in water reduces the solubility and leads to phase separation of PEO chains from water with the formation of a two-phase region. In this work, we further elucidate the generic mechanism behind strain-induced phase transitions in aqueous PEO solutions with concentrations of 50-60 wt % by performing all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. In particular, we study the stability of oriented PEO fibers after removing stretching forces.

Bone substitute materials loaded with mediators that stimulate fracture healing are demanded in the clinical treatment in trauma surgery and orthopedics. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) enhances the proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblast. To load the implants with BDNF, a drug delivery system that allows the release of BDNF under spatiotemporal control would improve functionality.

In conductive polymer composites (CPCs), which can be used as both strain sensors and materials with self-diagnosis capabilities for structural health monitoring, the piezoresistive sensitivity can be tuned by changing the electrical filler network structure, mainly influenced by the conductive filler content. Typically, the electrical resistance increases exponentially with strain, and the piezoresistive sensitivity and linearity cannot be improved simultaneously. In this work, we report a facile method to tune the piezoresistive behavior of melt-mixed poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/carbon nanotube (CNT, 0.

We study the impact of arm architecture of polymers with a single branch point on their structure in solvents. Many physical properties of polymer liquids strongly dependent on the size and shape measures of individual macromolecules, which in turn are determined by their topology. Here, we use combination of analytical theory, based on path integration method, and molecular dynamics simulations to study structural properties of complex Gaussian polymers containing [Formula: see text] linear branches and [Formula: see text] closed loops grafted to the central core.

Titanium dioxide (TiO) has a long history of application in blood contact materials, but it often suffers from insufficient anticoagulant properties. Recently, we have revealed the photocatalytic effect of TiO also induces anticoagulant properties. However, for long-term vascular implant devices such as vascular stents, besides anticoagulation, also anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperplastic properties, and the ability to support endothelial repair, are desired.

We report on the structure of dendritic polyelectrolytes accompanied by counterions in a good, salt-free, implicit solvent using Langevin dynamics simulations and a Flory-type approach. Our focus is on the modification of charged dendrimer conformations via the strength of electrostatic interactions and the counterion excluded volume. We study the effects caused by charges by varying the reduced Bjerrum length, λ, between the extremes of weak and strong electrostatic interactions.

The plasticity of the tumour microenvironment is a key contributor to cancer development and progression. Here, we present a bioengineered breast tumour angiogenesis model comprised of mammary derived epithelial, endothelial and fibroblast cells, to dissect the mechanisms of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) on microvascular-like network formation and epithelial spheroid morphology. Primary patient-derived mammary endothelial cells, normal breast fibroblasts (NBF, patient matched) and CAFs were cultured within three-dimensional (3D) semi-synthetic hydrogels where CAFs promoted an increase in the density and morphology of the microvascular-like network.

Cancer nanotherapeutics have shown promise in resolving some of the limitations of conventional drug delivery systems such as nonspecific biodistribution and targeting, lack of water solubility, and low therapeutic indices, Among the various nanoparticles that are available, dendrimers, highly branched macromolecules with a specific size and shape, are one of the most promising ones. In this preliminary study, we tested the anti-tumor activity of maltotriose-modified fourth-generation poly(propylene imine) glycodendrimers (PPI-G4-M3) in vivo in the subcutaneous MEC-1 xenograft model of human chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in NOD scid gamma mice.
