High-throughput (HTP) plant phenotyping approaches are developing rapidly and are already helping to bridge the genotype-phenotype gap. However, technologies should be developed beyond current physico-spectral evaluations to extend our analytical capacities to the subcellular level. Metabolites define and determine many key physiological and agronomic features in plants and an ability to integrate a metabolomics approach within current HTP phenotyping platforms has huge potential for added value.

Imine resveratrol analogs (IRAs) are promising new agents that can have higher positive effects and, simultaneously, lower negative properties than resveratrol. In this study, three imine hydroxy derivatives (2-((4-hydroxyphenylimino) methyl) phenol [IRA1], 3-((4-hydroxyphenylimino) methyl) phenol [IRA2], and 4-((4-hydroxyphenylimino) methyl) phenol [IRA3]) were prepared and tested in several biological assays. They performed superior to resveratrol in several antioxidant and biological assays, showing high antioxidant capacity and low genotoxicity.

Several putative lipase genes from the genome of the yeast Blastobotrys (Arxula) raffinosifermentans (adeninivorans) LS3 were overexpressed in the yeast itself and screened for the desymmetrization of the dicarboxylic acid diester diethyl adipate (DEA) into the monoester monoethyl adipate (MEA). MEA can serve as a monomeric spacer group for functional polymers used in medical chemistry and dental applications. The selected lipase Alip2-c6hp was intracellularly located.

Ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) have been used as valuable experimental systems in numerous studies. Here, we focus on elucidating the spatiotemporal organisation of rDNA replication in To determine the subnuclear distribution of rDNA and the progression of its replication during the S phase, we apply 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) labelling, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, fluorescence hybridization and structured illumination microscopy. We show that rDNA is replicated inside and outside the nucleolus, where active transcription occurs at the same time.

Brassica napus (oilseed rape, canola) is one of the world's most important sources of vegetable oil for human nutrition and biofuel, and also a model species for studies investigating the evolutionary consequences of polyploidisation. Strong bottlenecks during its recent origin from interspecific hybridisation, and subsequently through intensive artificial selection, have severely depleted the genetic diversity available for breeding. On the other hand, high-throughput genome profiling technologies today provide unprecedented scope to identify, characterise and utilise genetic diversity in primary and secondary crop gene pools.

Background: Homoeologous sequences pose a particular challenge if bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) contigs shall be established for specific regions of an allopolyploid genome. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) differentiating between homoeologous genomes (intergenomic SNPs) may represent a suitable screening tool for such purposes, since they do not only identify homoeologous sequences but also differentiate between them.

Results: Sequence alignments between Brassica rapa (AA) and Brassica oleracea (CC) sequences mapping to corresponding regions on chromosomes A1 and C1, respectively were used to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms between the A and C genomes.
