Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) belonging to clonal complex 361 (CC361-MRSA) is rare among patients' populations globally. However, CC361-MRSA has been isolated with an increasing trend among patients in Kuwait hospitals since 2010. This study investigated the molecular characteristics of CC361-MRSA isolated from patients in Kuwait hospitals in 2016-2018 to understand their genetic relatedness and virulence determinants.

Due to the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance, and the difficulties of treating biofilm-associated infections, alternative treatments for infections are urgently needed. We tested the lytic activity of several wild type phages against a panel of 110 strains (MRSA/MSSA) composed to reflect the prevalence of clonal complexes in human infections. The plaquing host ranges (PHR) of the wild type phages were in the range of 51% to 60%.

The prevalence of multidrug resistant, extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae is increasing worldwide. The present study aimed to provide an overview of the multidrug resistance phenotype and genotype of ESBL-producing () isolates of livestock and wild bird origin in Greece. Nineteen phenotypically confirmed ESBL-producing strains isolated from fecal samples of cattle ( = 7), pigs ( = 11) and a Eurasian magpie that presented resistance to at least one class of non β-lactam antibiotics, were selected and genotypically characterized.

Here, we describe a poorly known lineage from the Middle East, CC1153, to which several strains from humans and livestock belong. Isolates were characterised using DNA microarrays and one isolate from the United Arab Emirates was sequenced using Nanopore technology.

Aggregation of insulin into amyloid fibrils is characterized by the conversion of the native secondary structure of the peptide into an enriched ß-sheet conformation. In vitro, the growth or disintegration of amyloid fibrils can be influenced by various external factors such as pH, temperature etc. While current studies mainly focus on the influence of environmental conditions on the growth process of insulin fibrils, the present study investigates the effect of pH changes on the morphology and secondary structure of mature fibrils.

Crucial to effective optical trapping is the ability to precisely control the nature of force/potential to be attractive or repulsive. The nature of particles being trapped is as important as the role of laser parameters in determining the stability of the optical trap. In this context, hybrid particles comprising of both dielectric and metallic materials offer a wide range of new possibilities due to their tunable optical properties.

Information about livestock carrying methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci and mammaliicocci (MRCoNS/MRM) is scarce. The study was designed to gain knowledge of the prevalence, the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance and the genetic diversity of MRCoNS/MRM originating from ruminants and New World camelids. In addition, a multi-locus sequence typing scheme for the characterization of Mammaliicoccus (formerly Staphylococcus) sciuri was developed.

We report on the localization of the initially excited electronic state within the molecular framework of a series of [Ru(bpy)dppz] derivatives (bpy:2,2'-bipyridine, dppz: dipyrido-phenazine) as sensitizers in NiO based photocathodes. The introduction of conjugated linkers with phenylene and triazole moieties in the bpy ligand sphere separates the NiO surface from the metal center and hence is considered to stabilize the charge separated state, which results from light-driven hole injection. However, introduction of the conjugated linkers also alters the localization of the excess electron density in the excited state within the ligand sphere and impacts the extent to which the charge-separated state is formed.

A conductive polymer (poly(p-phenylenevinylene), PPV) was covalently modified with Ru complexes to develop an all-polymer photocathode as a conceptual alternative to dye-sensitized NiO, which is the current state-of-the-art photocathode in solar fuels research. Photocathodes require efficient light-induced charge-transfer processes and we investigated these processes within our photocathodes using spectroscopic and spectro-electrochemical techniques. Ultrafast hole-injection dynamics in the polymer were investigated by transient absorption spectroscopy and charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface was examined with chopped-light chronoamperometry.

We investigated diversity, genetic factors, and humoral immune responses against antigens via genome analysis of isolates from chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients in a long-term follow-up. Of the 42 patients who provided isolates and serum for a previous study, 34 could be included for follow-up after a decade. Clinical examinations were performed and bacterial samples were collected from the maxillary sinus and nares.

In this contribution we review selected point-of-care applications of infrared spectroscopy and the technological innovations they are based on. After a short introduction summarizing the general idea behind point-of-care applications we introduce the reader to important infrared spectroscopy sensing principles on a very basic level. We discuss the role of optical components like quantum cascade lasers, supercontinuum sources, waveguides and how they are potentially going to revolutionize point-of-care applications.

Background: Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive community-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is increasingly associated with infection outbreaks.
Aim: To investigate multiple suspected PVL-positive CA-MRSA outbreaks using whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
Methods: Forty-six suspected outbreak-associated isolates from 36 individuals at three separate Irish hospitals (H1-H3) and from separate incidents involving separate families associated with H2 were investigated by whole-genome multi-locus sequence typing (wgMLST).

The development of p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (p-DSSCs) offers an opportunity to assemble tandem photoelectrochemical solar cells with higher efficiencies than TiO-based photoanodes, pioneered by O'Regan and Grätzel [Nature 353, 737-740 (1991)]. This paper describes an investigation into the behavior at the interfaces in p-DSSCs, using a series of BODIPY dyes, BOD1-3. The three dyes have different structural and electronic properties, which lead to different performances in p-DSSCs.

A PVL-positive, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus was cultured from pus from cervical lymphadenitis of a patient of East-African origin. Microarray hybridisation assigned the isolate to clonal complex (CC) 80 but revealed unusual features, including the presence of the ORF-CM14 enterotoxin homologue and of an ACME-III element as well as the absence of etD and edinB. The isolate was subjected to both, Illumina and Nanopore sequencing allowing characterisation of deviating regions within the strain´s genome.

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are highly promising for integrated optoelectronic and photonic systems due to their exciton-driven linear and nonlinear interactions with light. Integrating them into optical fibers yields novel opportunities in optical communication, remote sensing, and all-fiber optoelectronics. However, the scalable and reproducible deposition of high-quality monolayers on optical fibers is a challenge.

The utilization of solar energy is restricted by the intermittent nature of solar influx. We present novel noble-metal free complexes that can be photochemically charged in the presence of sacrificial electron donors and remain stable in its charged form for over 14 h. This allows the doubly reduced Cu(I) 4-imidazolate complex to be stored after photochemical charging and used as a reagent in dark reactions, such as the reduction of methyl viologen or oxygen.

Lipid rafts form signaling platforms on biological membranes with incompletely characterized role in immune response to infection. Here we report that lipid-raft microdomains are essential components of phagolysosomal membranes of macrophages and depend on flotillins. Genetic deletion of flotillins demonstrates that the assembly of both major defense complexes vATPase and NADPH oxidase requires membrane microdomains.
