Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) represents a complex constellation of symptoms that persist following a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), with significant implications for patient care and outcomes. Despite its prevalence, diagnosing PCS presents considerable challenges due to the subjective nature of symptoms, the absence of specific diagnostic tests, and the overlap with other neurological and psychiatric conditions. This review explores the multifaceted diagnostic challenges associated with PCS, including the heterogeneity of symptom presentation, the limitations of current neuroimaging techniques, and the overlap of PCS symptoms with other disorders.

In public health, risk experts often define acceptable risk targets without community input. We developed a novel method for applying behavioral microeconomics to integrate individuals' risk preferences into risk assessment. To demonstrate this methodology, we explored a risk-risk tradeoff case scenario: increased asthma risk from increased cleaning and disinfection (C&D) and increased infection risk from decreased C&D for healthcare staff.

"My name is bond. Green bond." Informational efficiency of climate finance markets.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Leeds University Business School, University of Leeds, United Kingdom.

This paper investigates the informational efficiency of green bond markets using a recently introduced quantitative measure for market inefficiency. The paper finds that, first, the degree of inefficiency of the green bond market is very similar to that of benchmark bond markets; in addition, fundamental factors that drive bond prices in general also drive prices for green bonds. The green bond market, however, is less affected by challenging environments such as the COVID outbreak in 2020 and the inflation shock in 2022/2023 than the benchmark markets.

Integrating insights from team hierarchy literature and shared leadership research, we propose and test a model that illuminates the positive and negative team processes through which shared leadership relates to team creativity. We use a social network lens to examine both shared leadership level (indexed by team density of informal leadership ties) and shared leadership concentration (indexed by team centralization of such ties). With a sample of 136 work teams and three waves of surveys, we found that shared leadership concentration weakens the positive effect of shared leadership level on team creativity.

Behavioral Science and Policy Initiative, Schaeffer Institute for Public Policy and Government Service, Price School of Public Policy and Dornsife Department of Psychology, University of Southern California.

Simple graphical displays such as icon arrays and tree diagrams have been proposed for communicating health risks and supporting informed decisions. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) uses tree diagrams to communicate the chances of different cervical cancer screening results, but their effectiveness has not been compared to icon arrays. We conducted a well-powered longitudinal experiment involving 3,100 UK women eligible for cervical screening (25-64 years) to examine the effectiveness of icon arrays to communicate possible cervical screening results, relative to the UK NHS's tree diagram and to a numerical-only format.

This study presents a theoretical investigation into the photovoltaic efficiency of InGaN/GaN quantum well-based intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) under the simultaneous influence of electric and magnetic fields. The finite element method is employed to numerically solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation within the framework of the effective-mass approximation. Our findings reveal that electric and magnetic fields significantly influence the energy levels of electrons and holes, optical transition energies, open-circuit voltages, short-circuit currents, and overall photovoltaic conversion performances of IBSCs.

Praise Is for Actions That Are Neither Expected nor Required.

Pers Soc Psychol Bull

October 2024

Department of Psychology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

In six studies, we examined two foundational questions about moral praise. First, what makes an action praiseworthy? In Study 1, participants reported that actions that exceed duties (compared with dutiful actions) deserve greater praise and are perceived as less likely to happen. Second, what do observers infer from praise? Praise may communicate information about local norms.

An emerging body of literature connects the well-known Varieties of Capitalism framework (and its variants) with the propensity of nations to move away from hydrocarbons. Our study extends this work by exploring how macro-level institutional configurations matter for public expectations towards corporate environmental sustainability practices. By linking survey data of public-as-stakeholders to institutional systems encompassing 16 countries (N = 7156), we use multi-level modelling to test the explanatory power of a theoretically well-refined recent construct, namely, the Varieties of Institutional Systems - and discover significant variations associated with public expectations across different institutional systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how the amount and timing of rewards affect rats' choices and how quickly they respond in a free-operant setting compared to traditional discrete-trial methods.
  • It found that when the rewards were similar in timing, the amount of the reward influenced the rats' choices; however, when there were bigger differences in delay, the rats prioritized the shorter delay.
  • Overall, the results suggest that using a free-operant approach can effectively analyze preference behavior, revealing complex interactions between reward amount and delay.

Understanding our cognitive and behavioral reactions to large-scale collective problems involving health and resource scarcity threats, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, helps us be better prepared for future collective threats. However, existing studies on these threats tend to be restricted to correlational data, partly due to a lack of reliable experimental techniques for manipulating threat perceptions. In four preregistered experiments (N = 5152), we developed and validated an experimental technique that can separately activate perceptions of personal health threat or resource scarcity threat, either in the specific context of the COVID-19 pandemic or in general.
