Introduction: Multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacterial infections are considered a major public health threat. The objectives of this study were to describe the epidemiology, potential contributing factors, and antimicrobial resistance patterns associated with infections caused by MDR Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in non-immunocompromised children and adolescents.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study conducted at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) from 2009 to 2017.

Background: Lactate has long been recognized as a key prognostic biomarker in sepsis. Similarly, the prognostic role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been investigated in various conditions, including sepsis. Previous studies have explored the optimal NLR cutoff to differentiate sepsis survivors from nonsurvivors, predict bacteremia, diagnose sepsis, and assess mortality.

A Bitter Pill: The Ethics of Involuntary Treatment of Adolescents With Severe Eating Disorders.

Severe eating disorders (EDs) are a common and increasing threat to normal adolescent health and development. Major clinical challenges include longstanding malnutrition potentially complicated by emergent electrolyte disorders and cardiac dysfunction. The care of adolescents with severe EDs can lead to challenging decisions regarding the initiation of involuntary feeding with restraints.

Background: In the context of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Health Ministry (GHM) has reported 45 936 fatalities and more than 10 000 individuals missing or under the rubble for the period Oct 7, 2023, to Jan 8, 2025. The scope of this death count is difficult to fully interpret because it does not account for the size and age distribution of the Gaza Strip population. Moreover, the quality of this death count has been questioned.

The main aim of the current study was to compare the effects of two strength training modalities (hypertrophy vs. contrast training) on bone health parameters, physical performance and quality of life in a group of subjects aged 60 and above with low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). 45 older adults voluntarily participated in this study, but only 41 (22 women and 19 men) completed it.

Background/objectives: This protocol describes a study to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a novel Teaching Kitchen Multisite Trial (TK-MT) for adults with cardiometabolic abnormalities. The TK-MT protocol describes a hybrid lifestyle intervention combining in-person and virtual instruction in culinary skills, nutrition education, movement, and mindfulness with community support and behavior change strategies. This 18-month-long randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a 12-month, 24 class program, assess preliminary study efficacy, and identify barriers and facilitators to implementation.

Overnutrition disturbs key metabolic pathways, including insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS), the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and AMP-activated protein kinase.

Co-Creating Snacks: A Cross-Cultural Study with Mediterranean Children Within the DELICIOUS Project.

Mediterranean diet adherence has been decreasing during the last few decades, and non-appropriate snacking habits have also been identified among Mediterranean children and adolescents. To co-create new snacks and to explore children's interests and preferences, a multi-method approach was used in the present study, including some qualitative and quantitative research phases. Conducted in collaboration with schools in Lebanon, Egypt, Portugal, Italy, and Spain, different snack prototypes were designed and tested in a Mediterranean cross-cultural context.

Objective: Surgical sterilization, including vasectomy in males and tubal ligation in females, is a highly effective but underutilized contraception method. Adoption rates vary globally mostly due to misconceptions by both the general public and practicing physicians. This work explores the mathematical technique known as the Hirota bilinear transformation to investigate different wave behaviors of the nonlinear Rosenau equation, which is fundamental in the study of wave occurrences in a variety of physical systems such as fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and materials science, where nonlinear dynamics and dispersion offer significant functions. This equation was suggested to describe the dynamic behaviour of dense discrete systems. We use Mathematica to investigate these wave patterns and obtained variety of wave behaviors, such as M-shaped waves, mixed waves, multiple wave forms, periodic lumps, periodic cross kinks, bright and dark breathers, and kinks and anti-kinks.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions.
