Processed and ultra-processed foods are associated with depression and anxiety symptoms in a cross-sectional sample of urban Lebanese adults.

Nutr Res

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon; Faculty of Medicine, Clinical Research Institute, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon.

While low dietary quality has been linked to poor mental health, evidence on more direct relations of specific dietary quality indicators, namely degrees of food processing, with mental health disorders remains limited. This study aims to investigate the association between food groups' intakes, defined based on their degree of food processing, with depression and anxiety symptoms in a sample of Lebanese adults. We hypothesized that higher intakes of ultra-processed foods (UPF) will be related to higher risk of depression and anxiety while an opposite association will be observed for unprocessed or minimally processed foods (MPF).

East Mediterr Health J

December 2024

Assistant Director-General of the Universal Health Coverage, Life Course Division, World Health Organization Headquarters, Geneva.

The 'next pandemic' has become a common terminology increasingly used in media and academic literature. Emerging pathogens pose a considerable risk to our increasingly globalised communities and there is a need for adequate preparedness for them. However, in Lebanon, like in many countries, the 'next' pathogens, such as the measles pathogen, posing a dire threat to public health are neither emerging nor re-emerging; they are common, endemic and vaccine-preventable.

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Section of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Lebanon, NH; Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics. Electronic address:

The art of clinical negotiation is an important, yet underappreciated aspect of medicine. Key components of negotiation include the need to consider principles over personalities, to explore all options before deciding on the best course, to realize if consensus cannot be achieved then compromise may still be possible, to work from evidence to incorporate contextual factors, and to stay evidence based. These principles can be helpful in many settings, including contract negotiation, drug pricing, and research.

Review of the environmental and health risks of hydraulic fracturing fluids.

Heliyon

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

The composition of hydraulic fracturing (HF) fluid poses risks to human health and the environment by impacting drinking water sources. Fracturing fluid recovery rate is highly variable, and the fact that a high percentage of the injected HF fluid is not produced back to the surface in some areas raises questions about its fate and possible migration into aquifers. In this paper, the composition of the HF fluid and related toxicity are described, along with insights about the environmental impact linked with HF fluid, synthesized spill data, main factors affecting the flow-back ratio, and induced seismicity related to HF activities.
