Explor Res Clin Soc Pharm

June 2023

Faculty of Pharmacy, Lebanese University LU, Hadath 4013, Lebanon.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on a non-fermentative bacterium that shows natural resistance to colistin, an antibiotic, and has been found in both animals and humans, particularly after isolating six strains from Senegalese monkey stool.
  • Researchers tested various efflux pump inhibitors to see if they could decrease the bacterium's resistance to colistin; the combination of colistin and one specific inhibitor (CCCP) was effective in lowering the minimum inhibitory concentration, suggesting an efflux pump mechanism at work.
  • Further analysis indicated that certain efflux pumps (like YejABEF, NorM, and EmrAB) may play a role in this resistance, and the colistin-CCCP

Article Synopsis
  • Buprenorphine, an opioid substitution treatment (OST), is widely used for treating opioid use disorder (OUD) in developed countries, but its use in Lebanese prisons is limited compared to community settings.
  • A pilot study compared prisoner satisfaction with symptomatic treatment against community patients on Buprenorphine, revealing significantly lower satisfaction levels among prisoners.
  • The paper advocates for the ethical implementation of Buprenorphine in Lebanese prisons, aiming to enhance the OST program in Lebanon and potentially offering a model for other countries in the region.

Phospholipase D: A new mediator during high phosphate-induced vascular calcification associated with chronic kidney disease.

J Cell Physiol

April 2019

University of Lyon, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL), CNRS UMR 5246, Institut de Chimie et Biochimie Moléculaires et Supramoléculaires (ICBMS), Lyon, France.

Vascular calcification (VC) is the pathological accumulation of calcium phosphate crystals in one of the layers of blood vessels, leading to loss of elasticity and causing severe calcification in vessels. Medial calcification is mostly seen in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes. Identification of key enzymes and their actions during calcification will contribute to understand the onset of pathological calcification.

Cancer of the head and neck has profound psychosocial and physical effects on patients, so quality of life (QoL) is an essential consideration-not only is it of importance to the patient but it also provides a subjective measure of the success of treatment. However, we know of little work about its influence on carers. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the diagnosis and treatment on the QoL of patients and their carers from baseline (preoperatively) to three months postoperatively.

The H3.3 histone variant has been a subject of increasing interest in the field of chromatin studies due to its two distinguishing features. First, its incorporation into chromatin is replication independent unlike the replication-coupled deposition of its canonical counterparts H3.
