Autoimmune brainstem encephalitis (BSE) is a rare neurological condition with a wide range of underlying etiologies. It can be subdivided into two broad groups: a primary inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) or a brainstem disorder secondary to systemic diseases where the CNS is only one of many affected organs. Symptoms range from mild to life-threatening manifestations.

Several studies have been conducted to investigate the relation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level and diabetic neuropathy (DN). However, there is still no clear conclusion due to differences in study design and cut-off values used in the published work, in addition to the absence of a comprehensive meta-analysis (MA) on the topic. The present systematic review and MA therefore aims at clarifying the association between vitamin D level and peripheral DN in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Immune-mediated encephalitis as an adverse event due to checkpoint inhibitors is very rare. We describe herein the case of a 38-year-old woman with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer who developed seizures and somnolence twelve days after receiving the first dose of Atezolizumab. Work up ruled out all infectious etiologies, and the patient was eventually diagnosed with immune-mediated meningoencephalitis.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Lebanese American University Medical Center-Rizk Hospital, Lebanese American University, School of Medicine, Lebanon; Center for Evidence-Based Anatomy, Sport & Orthopedics Research, Lebanon.

Objective: The diabetic foot disease is one of the most serious complications of diabetes causing high rates of amputations, premature deaths and healthcare cost. While standard non-surgical care is the mainstay of treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), many reports demonstrated that conservative surgery particularly in the forefoot, compared better in terms of clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, the quality of surgical articles dealing with diabetic ulcers of the forefoot is thought to be average.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the increasing occurrence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to antibiotic-resistant E. coli, which poses significant public health and economic challenges.
  • It compares hospitalized patients with UTIs caused by resistant E. coli to those with susceptible strains, finding that resistant cases lead to higher hospitalization costs and longer stays.
  • The findings suggest that addressing antibiotic resistance could alleviate financial burdens and highlight the need for national plans to tackle this growing issue.

Papillary tumors of the pineal region (PTPR) can be observed among adults with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates. Standards of therapy involve total surgical excision along with radiation therapy, with no promising prospects for primary adjuvant chemotherapy, as long-term treatment options have not been explored. Chromosome 10 loss is characteristic of PTPR, and gene alterations are frequently encountered in a wide range of human cancers and may be treated with mTORC1 inhibitors such as everolimus.

Electrophysiology plays a determinant role in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) diagnosis, classification, and prognostication. However, traditional electrodiagnostic (EDX) criteria for GBS rely on motor nerve conduction studies (NCS) and are suboptimal early in the course of the disease or in the setting of GBS variants. Sensory nerve conduction studies, including the sural-sparing pattern and the sensory ratio are not yet included in EDX criteria despite their well-established role in GBS diagnosis.

The standard medical care (SC) of non-infected diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) has been reported to yield varying rates of wound healing with high recurrence rate in non-infected wounds. Conservative surgery has been advanced as an alternative to SC in treating resistant non-complicated and complicated DFUs. Studies reporting resection arthroplasty (RA) of the first metatarsal head stated high healing rates with less recurrence.
