Skeletal muscle dysfunction is an important systemic consequence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that worsens the natural cause of the disease. Up to a third of all people with COPD express some form of impairment which encompasses reductions in strength and endurance, as well as an increased fatigability. Considering this complexity, no single test could be used to measure and monitor all aspects of the impaired skeletal muscle function within the COPD population, resulting in a wide range of available tests and measurement techniques.

Aortic stenosis is a progressive disease that develops over decades, and once symptomatic and untreated, is associated with poor survival. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement has evolved significantly in the past decade and has expanded its indication from surgically inoperable and high-risk patients to patients with intermediate risk. Assessment of heart failure-related outcomes include the use of functional assessments, disease-specific quality of life surveys and standardised ascertainment of events, such as hospitalisations.

Studies that examined associations between low circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and adverse pregnancy outcomes used various designs, assay methods and time points for measurement of 25(OH)D concentrations, which creates some confusion in the current literature. We aimed to investigate the variability in the timing and measurement methods used to evaluate vitamin D status during pregnancy. Analysis of 198 studies published between 1976 and 2017 showed an important variability in the choice of 1) threshold values for 25(OH)D insufficiency or deficiency, 2) 25(OH)D measurement methods, and 3) trimester in which 25(OH)D concentrations were measured.

Layer by layer (LbL) film deposition is an efficient technique used to produce thin coatings with high gas barrier properties. In this study, multilayer composite coatings with hydrogen bonding inter-layer interactions were deposited by LbL on a PET substrate, with an alternate deposition of a nanoclay layer and different intercalating polymers layers, namely chitosan (CS), polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The investigated coatings had two different structures, quadlayers and bilayers which are different in the number of layers in the repetitive unit (four and two respectively).

The conjugative metabolism mediated by UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzymes (UGTs) significantly influences the bioavailability and biological responses of endogenous molecule substrates and xenobiotics including drugs. UGTs participate in the regulation of cellular homeostasis by limiting stress induced by toxic molecules, and by controlling hormonal signaling networks. Glucuronidation is highly regulated at genomic, transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational levels.

The Bentall procedure introduced in 1968 represents an undisputed cure to treat multiple pathologies involving the aortic valve and the ascending thoracic aorta. Over the years, multiple modifications have been introduced as well as a standardized approach to the operation with the goal to prevent long-term adverse events. The Gelweave Valsalva graft provides a novel manner to more efficiently reconstruct the anatomy of the aortic root either with a valve-sparing procedure or with the implantation of a valved conduit (bioprosthesis or mechanical valve).

Objective: A novel single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with morbid obesity was recently identified by exome sequencing. The purpose of this study was to follow up this low-frequency coding SNP located within the locus and associated with body mass index in order to reveal novel associations with obesity-related traits.
Methods: The body mass index-associated SNP (rs62623713 A>G [chr1:109476817/hg19]) and two tagging SNPs within the locus, rs9661614 T>C (chr1:109479215) and rs485660 G>A (chr1:109480810), were genotyped in the obesity ( = 3,017) and the infogene ( = 676) cohorts, which were further combined, leading to a larger cohort of 3,693 individuals.

The reconstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) system represents a considerable challenge for both manufacturers and surgeons because the patients requiring this type of devices have a very diverse set of anatomical challenges that can lead to complications and subsequent early device failures. We conducted an indepth investigation of a porcine-valve conduit explanted from a patient following an adverse event. A control device was analyzed as a reference.

Microglia constitute the powerhouse of the innate immune system in the brain. It is now widely accepted that they are monocytic-derived cells that infiltrate the developing brain at the early embryonic stages, and acquire a resting phenotype characterized by the presence of dense branching processes, called ramifications. Microglia use these dynamic ramifications as sentinels to sense and detect any occurring alteration in brain homeostasis.

The proteins secreted by a particular type of cell, the secretome, play important roles in the regulation of many physiological processes via paracrine/autocrine mechanisms, and they are of increasing interest to help understanding rare diseases and to identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. To facilitate ongoing research involving secreted proteins, we revisited cell culture protocols and whole secreted protein enrichment protocols. A reliable method for culturing and precipitating secreted protein from patient-derived fibroblast conditioned-medium was established.

The role of aerial dispersal in shaping patterns of biodiversity remains poorly understood, mainly due to a lack of coordinated efforts in gathering data at appropriate temporal and spatial scales. It has been long known that the rate of dispersal to an ecosystem can significantly influence ecosystem dynamics, and that aerial transport has been identified as an important source of biological input to remote locations. With the considerable effort devoted in recent decades to understanding atmospheric circulation in the south-polar region, a unique opportunity has emerged to investigate the atmospheric ecology of Antarctica, from regional to continental scales.
