Piceatannol is a hydroxylated derivative of resveratrol. While both dietary polyphenols coexist in edible plants and fruits, and share equivalent concentrations in several wines, the influence of piceatannol on adiposity has been less studied than that of resveratrol. Though resveratrol is now recognized to limit fat deposition in various obesity models, the benefit of its dietary supplementation remains under debate regarding human obesity treatment or prevention.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARgamma) agonism potently reduces circulating triglycerides (TG) in rodents and more modestly so in humans. This study aimed to quantify in vivo the relative contribution of hepatic VLDL-TG secretion and tissue-specific TG clearance to such action. Rats were fed an obesogenic diet, treated with the PPARgamma full agonist COOH (30 mg.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of whey protein isolate (WPI) gel microentrapment on the viability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus R011 during the production and storage of biscuits, frozen cranberry juice, and vegetable juice. Viability of microentrapped (ME) cells was compared to free cells freeze-dried in a milk-based protective solution as well as in a WPI-based solution (ungelled). During the production of biscuits and their storage for 2 wk at 23 degrees C, the highest stability was obtained with the cells ME in WPI gel particles.

Tissue-specific alterations in 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) type 1 activity, which amplifies glucocorticoid action, are thought to contribute to some of the metabolic complications of obesity. The present study tested whether hypertriglyceridemia is one such complication by investigating the effects of an 11beta-HSD1 inhibitor (compound A, 3 mgxkg(-1)xday(-1), 21 days) on triglyceride (TG) metabolism in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. The dose of compound A used did not affect food intake or final body weight.

The aim of this study was to examine a form of sarcasm that has hardly been considered to date, sarcastic requests, at an earlier period of development than addressed in past developmental research. This article looked specifically at the role of intonation and context in sarcastic-request understanding by native French-speaking children ages 3 to 7 years. Forty-eight children (16 per group) had to complete stories that varied on 2 factors: intonation (sarcastic and neutral) and context (sarcastic and neutral).

In inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, the target rotational motion with respect to the radar line of sight contributes to the imaging ability, whereas the translational motion must be compensated out. This paper presents a novel two-step approach to translational motion compensation using an adaptive range tracking method for range bin alignment and a recursive multiple-scatterer algorithm (RMSA) for signal phase compensation. The initial step of RMSA is equivalent to the dominant-scatterer algorithm (DSA).

An approach to the lossy compression of color images with limited palette that does not require color quantization of the decoded image is presented. The algorithm is particularly suited for coding images using an image-dependent palette. The technique restricts the pixels of the decoded image to take values only in the original palette.

The point spread function (PSF) of a ring PET tomograph is known to be spatially variant and difficult to obtain because it must be reconstructed from projections. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the data acquisition from a point source and to reconstruct the PSF, taking into account weighting functions to describe the detector response functions. In order to investigate the effect of the detector weighting function on the PSF, the reconstruction, based on the filtered backprojection algorithm, was implemented with three classes of weighting functions of decreasing complexity: exact, locally invariant, and constant.

The authors present a computer vision technique for the acquisition and processing of 3-D images of the profile of wax dental imprints in the automation of diagnosis in orthodontics. The acquisition of the 3-D images is based on the absorption of light by a dispersive medium and uses standard CCD (charge coupled device) cameras. The profiles of both sides of the imprint are acquired simultaneously.
