Hemato-oncologic children form a heterogeneous group with a wide spectrum of ages, malignancy types, and immunosuppression grades during the different phases of their treatment. Immunosuppression is caused by multiple factors, including the malignancy itself, bone marrow suppression secondary to therapy, and wide use of steroids and antibiotics, among others. At the same time, the risk of infections in these patients remains high because of prolonged hospitalizations or the need for long-timing implanted devices between other features.

Background: Multiple genetic and environmental risk factors play a role in the development of both schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and affective psychoses. How they act in combination is yet to be clarified.
Methods: We analyzed 573 first episode psychosis cases and 1005 controls, of European ancestry.

Purpose: To implement a flexible framework, named HydrOptiFrame, for the design and optimization of time-efficient water-excitation (WE) RF pulses using B-spline interpolation, and to characterize their lipid suppression performance.
Methods: An evolutionary optimization algorithm was used to design WE RF pulses. The algorithm minimizes a composite loss function that quantifies the fat-water contrast using Bloch equation simulations.

Purpose: Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer in women and radiotherapy (RT) is an integral part of its treatment. High-level evidence guides clinical decisions, but given the abundance of guidelines, a need to navigate within the evidence has been identified by the board of the Scientific Association of Swiss Radiation Oncology (SASRO). A pilot project was initiated aiming to create an overview of recent clinically relevant evidence for BC RT, to make it easily available to (radiation) oncologists and radiation oncologists in training.

Volume-regulated anion channels (VRACs) are multimeric proteins composed of different paralogs of the LRRC8 family. They are activated in response to hypotonic swelling, but little is known about their specific functions. We studied two human individuals with the same congenital syndrome affecting blood vessels, brain, eyes, and bones.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts the neuronal projections from the brain to the region of the spinal cord that produces walking, leading to various degrees of paralysis. Here, we aimed to identify brain regions that steer the recovery of walking after incomplete SCI and that could be targeted to augment this recovery. To uncover these regions, we constructed a space-time brain-wide atlas of transcriptionally active and spinal cord-projecting neurons underlying the recovery of walking after incomplete SCI.

Background: The gold standard for treating acute cholecystitis is an early laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, whether this still applies for a > 7-day existing cholecystitis remains heavily debated. Therefore, this systematic review investigates the safety of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy for a > 7-day existing cholecystitis.

To analyze the role of PCI variation (Δ-PCI) before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in an interval cytoreductive surgery (ICS) setting with the aim to propose a scoring model for predicting both complete cytoreduction and histopathologic response. A total of 50 consecutive patients who underwent ICS at our institution were prospectively collected between January-2020 and December-2023. PCI was assessed at exploratory surgery and at ICS.

VEXAS syndrome, a monogenic X-linked disorder resulting from mutations in the UBA1 gene, has emerged as a key model for unraveling the links between systemic inflammatory or autoimmune diseases (SIAD) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MD). This syndrome is characterized by the presence of vacuoles, X-linked inheritance, autoinflammation, and somatic mutation patterns, highlighting a unique intersection between genetic and immunological dysregulation. Apart from VEXAS, 10% to 30% of individuals diagnosed with MDS exhibit SIAD phenotypes, a significant increase compared to the 5% incidence in the general population.

This work proposes a new method to assess the performance of radiographic anti-scatter grids (ASGs) without the use of a narrow primary beam, which is difficult to achieve.Three general purpose ASGs were evaluated, two marketed ASGs and a low frequency and high ratio prototype ASG with molybdenum lamellae. A range of high scatter x-ray beams were used in a standardized geometry, with energies ranging from 60 kV to 121 kV, for five beam sizes between 10 × 10 and 30 × 30 cm.

BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) causes premature renal failure in 10% to 30% of kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Current guidelines recommend screening for new-onset BKPyV-DNAemia/nephropathy and reducing immunosuppression to regain BKPyV-specific immune control. Because BKPyV encompasses 4 major genotype (gt)-encoded serotypes (st1,-2,-3,-4), st-specific antibodies may inform the risk and course of BKPyV-DNAemia/nephropathy.

Purpose: Revisional bariatric surgery (RBS) has flourished during the last decades in many countries, due to suboptimal weight loss or long-term complications of primary bariatric surgery. Restrictive procedures, and in particular sleeve gastrectomy (SG), although widely performed as primary bariatric surgery, seems particularly prone to need surgical revision for the above-mentioned reasons during long-term follow-up. The aim of this systematic review was to compare the long-term (5-year) safety and efficacy between Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass (SADI) after 'failed' SG.

Neural entrainment has become a popular technique to non-invasively manipulate brain rhythms via external, periodic stimulation. However, there is still debate regarding its underlying mechanisms and effects on brain activity. Here, we used EEG recordings during a visual entrainment paradigm to assess characteristic changes in the spectral content of EEG signals due to entrainment.

Background: Improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important disease management goal in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS). HRQoL decreases with increasing age and prolonged disease duration; other factors remain less understood.
Objective: To identify associations of multiple sclerosis (MS) disease characteristics and symptom burden with low HRQoL.

The oxytocin system has been thought to contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Few studies, only involving adults, have investigated this hypothesis and have found inconsistent results regarding oxytocin system activity and OCD. We investigated whether salivary oxytocin concentrations differed between children and adolescents with and without OCD and qualified our comparative analysis by investigating the possible covariates age, pubertal stage, and sex.

Background And Aims: Vitamin/mineral supplements (VMS) and vitamin/mineral and/or dietary supplements (VMDS) are commonly consumed, based on the belief of their invigorating properties. Still, the association of VMS/VMDS with fatigue in the general population remains sparse and conclusions are mixed. This study aimed to understand the association between VMS/VMDS and fatigue.

Ex vivo activation is a prerequisite to reaching adequate levels of gene editing by homology-directed repair (HDR) for hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC)-based clinical applications. Here, we show that shortening culture time mitigates the p53-mediated DNA damage response to CRISPR-Cas9-induced DNA double-strand breaks, enhancing the reconstitution capacity of edited HSPCs. However, this results in lower HDR efficiency, rendering ex vivo culture necessary yet detrimental.

Background: Complex coronary artery abnormalities (CAA) are rare findings with no established guideline for their management in asymptomatic patients.
Case Summary: We report the case of a 49-year-old male patient, with no medical history, who was incidentally diagnosed for two congenital complex CAA during for the management of an acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation. The coronary angiogram showed an acute atheromatous occlusion of the right coronary artery (RCA) that was treated by a drug-eluting stent.
