Perioptic meningiomas, defined as those that are less than 3 mm from the optic apparatus, are challenging to treat with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Tumor control must be weighed against the risk of radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION), as both tumor progression and RION can lead to visual decline. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of single fraction SRS and hypofractionated radiosurgery (hfRS) for perioptic meningiomas, evaluating tumor control and visual preservation rates.

Background: As a consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection various neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms can appear, which may persist for several months post infection. However, cell type-specific routes of brain infection and underlying mechanisms resulting in neuroglial dysfunction are not well understood.

Methods: Here, we investigated the susceptibility of cells constituting the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) of the choroid plexus (ChP) to SARS-CoV-2 infection using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cellular models and a ChP papilloma-derived epithelial cell line as well as ChP tissue from COVID-19 patients, respectively.

Despite widespread sex differences in prevalence and presentation of numerous illnesses affecting the human brain, there has been little focus on the effect of endocrine ageing. Most preclinical studies have focused on males only, and clinical studies often analyse data by covarying for sex, ignoring relevant differences between the sexes. This sex- (and gender)-neutral approach is biased and contributes to the absence of targeted treatments and services for all sexes (and genders).

Healthy sleep score changes and incident cardiovascular disease in European prospective community-based cohorts.

Eur Heart J

December 2023

Université Paris Cité, INSERM U970, Paris Cardiovascular Research Centre (PARCC), Integrative Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease, 56 rue Leblanc, Paris 75015, France.

Background And Aims: Evidence on the link between sleep patterns and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the community essentially relies on studies that investigated one single sleep pattern at one point in time. This study examined the joint effect of five sleep patterns at two time points with incident CVD events.

Methods: By combining the data from two prospective studies, the Paris Prospective Study III (Paris, France) and the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study (Lausanne, Switzerland), a healthy sleep score (HSS, range 0-5) combining five sleep patterns (early chronotype, sleep duration of 7-8 h/day, never/rarely insomnia, no sleep apnoea, and no excessive daytime sleepiness) was calculated at baseline and follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • Research on antenatal classes has mostly focused on their impact before birth, with limited studies examining mothers' views on their usefulness after childbirth.
  • Antenatal classes have transitioned to emphasize a mother-centered approach, yet understanding mothers' perceptions post-birth is crucial for improving these educational programs.
  • A study involving 259 mothers found that while a majority were satisfied overall, many perceived the specific themes covered in the classes as less impactful, particularly citing gaps in information about labor complications and postnatal care.

The serine proteases CAP1/Prss8 and CAP3/St14 are identified as ENaC channel-activating proteases in vitro, highly suggesting that they are required for proteolytic activation of ENaC in vivo. The present study tested whether CAP3/St14 is relevant for renal proteolytic ENaC activation and affects ENaC-mediated Na absorption following Na deprivation conditions. CAP3/St14 knockout mice exhibit a significant decrease in CAP1/Prss8 protein expression with altered ENaC subunit and decreased pNCC protein abundances but overall maintain sodium balance.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a crimpling demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by JC polyomavirus (JCPyV). Much about JCPyV propagation in the brain remains obscure because of a lack of proper animal models to study the virus in the context of the disease, thus hampering efforts toward the development of new antiviral strategies. Here, having established a robust and representative model of JCPyV infection in human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived astrocytes, we are able to fully characterize the effect of JCPyV on the biology of the cells and show that the proteomic signature observed for JCPyV-infected astrocytes is extended to extracellular vesicles (EVs).

Background: Treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis with biologics, such as guselkumab, has demonstrated greater efficacy over traditional non-biologic treatments. However, given patient diversity, greater understanding of the relationship between patient characteristics, positive clinical outcomes, and long-term response to biologics is crucial for optimizing treatment choices.

Materials And Methods: This post-hoc analysis of the 5-year VOYAGE 1 clinical trial compares baseline characteristics of patients maintaining a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score of 0 at all visits for ≥ 156 consecutive weeks (PASI = 0 group) with those that never achieve PASI = 0 (comparator group), using descriptive statistics and a multiple logistic regression model.
